Shadow Of Light to shine again

New Paper19-06-2025
ASCOT Shadow Of Light will face 21 rivals as he bids to get back to winning ways in the £725,750 (S$1.25 million) Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (1,200m) for three-year-olds at Royal Ascot on June 20.
A unique winner of the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last season, which saw him crowned champion two-year-old, Shadow Of Light returned to action this season by finishing third behind stablemate Ruling Court and St James's Palace Stakes hero Field Of Gold in the Group 1 2000 Guineas (1,600m) at Newmarket on May 3.
After quickening up nicely, the son of Lope De Vega faded in the closing stages on his first start over a mile, leaving connections to opt to drop him back to six furlongs for the Commonwealth Cup.
Charlie Appleby's colt is a 7-4 chance to claim further Group 1 honours, with the Ger Lyons-trained Babouche, who landed the Group 3 Lacken Stakes (1,200m) at Naas last time, the main danger according to the market.
Appleby would be keen for a change of luck as it has been three years since he cracked open the champagne at Royal Ascot. Godolphin's main trainer could barely hide his disappointment after favourite Cinderella's Dream finished second to Crimson Advocate in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes (1,600m) on June 18.
Joining Babouche in the colours of Juddmonte will be Andrew Balding's Jonquil. The colt is another son of Lope De Vega dropping back to 1,200m on the back of finishing runner-up in the Group 1 French 2000 Guineas (1,600m) last time. Balding will also saddle the improving Berkshire Whisper.
Aidan O'Brien is dual-handed thanks to last year's Group 1 Prix Morny (1,200m) scorer Whistlejacket and Ides Of March, while the Michael Appleby-trained Big Mojo also takes his chances.
Arabian Dusk and Soldier's Heart both go for Simon and Ed Crisford, with Rayevka and Shisospicy, who represent France and America respectively, adding further international spice.
Later on the card, the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Zarigana heads 11 declarations for the £725,750 Group 1 Coronation Stakes (1,600m).
Carrying the colours of his late Highness Aga Khan, the daughter of Siyouni took her record to four from five with a dramatic victory in the Group 1 French 1000 Guineas (1,600m) at ParisLongchamp on May 11.
Challengers are aplenty, with Owen Burrows' impressive Listed Pretty Polly Stakes (2,000m) winner Falakeyah defending her unbeaten record for Shadwell, while Kon Tiki will also put her perfect status on the line having been supplemented by Jane Chapple-Hyam on the back of a commanding win in the Listed Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes (1,600m) at York.
O'Brien's pair Exactly and January also take their chances, while the Ollie Sangster-trained duo of Flight and Simmering, who finished second and third to Desert Flower in the Group 1 1000 Guineas (1,600m) respectively on May 4, add further depth. RACING AND SPORTS

July 9 South Africa (Scottsville) form analysis

Race 1 (1,600m) (1) OPERA FAN made a smart debut for her new stable but has had her chances, although she had some promising Highveld form. Dean Kannemeyer has a stable of promising juveniles and the unraced (2) GIMMEANOTHERVIKING is bred in the purple. (5) OMNIA was much improved second time when trying a little further on the Poly. She should come on from that effort. (4) GATHERING WINTERcompletes the shortlist. Race 2 (1,600m) Paul Lafferty's runner (10) BRUH has come on with each outing and looks primed for this. (2) FRENCH WAR LORD has shown up well in two sprints and the step up in trip from a plum draw can see him home. (4) MASTER SPY was a well-beaten fourth over the trip last time, but he can improve on that effort. (1) PIED PIPER showed up well on debut and steps up to a more suitable trip. Race 3 (1,200m) (10) XENOPHON looks primed to fire after two smart efforts. Narrowly beaten last run and he should go close again. (4) NEXT OF KIN showed up well on debut over course and distance, and one can expect good improvement from him. (8) CARDINAL CHIEF ran on strongly on debut and the extra furlong should suit. (9) RAGING MOON has not been far back in two outings and has a money chance. Race 4 (1,200m) (9) CELESTIAL DIAMOND was a beaten even-money favourite last start. She has shown up well in both starts and should run another good race. (16) LUCIENNE has put in three good efforts and should be involved in the finish again. (5) TRAIL RUNNER was a beaten favourite at her last two on the Highveld. She was not far behind and should feature. (1) CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT made a smart debut at long odds and is one to watch in the betting. Race 5 (1,600m) (5) WORLD OF ROYALTY steps up to a mile but has two good sprints in the bag. Beaten favourite last run but this trip should suit. (1) EL CAPITAN has the best draw and has not been out of the money in four starts since his return from the Cape. (8) LIMELIGHT LEGEND has been runner-up in his last three and stays the trip well, so he has a strong chance. (9) QUEEN OF THE AIR showed up well in her first run back from a lengthy break and is one to watch. Race 6 (1,750m) (5) PRINCESS PALACE is seldom far behind and steps up in trip. She has a handy weight and rates a strong winning chance. (3) HODGEPODGE shoulders top weight but has consistent form and should be in the firing line again. (10) ELEMBEE should not be far off. (9) ANOTHER DREAM is a recent maiden winner but won well from a wide draw and can be involved in the finish. Race 7 (1,750m) (4) DANCING ON A CLOUD has been a touch disappointing since running out an easy maiden winner on this course. He does seem better than his last two and gets another chance. (6) LOCK AND KEY has been a beaten favourite at her last two but has been runner-up and can go one better in this line-up. (2) ROYAL INVITATION has improved at her last two and comes from a Cape stable that does not have many runners up for the season. (5) TIRPITZ steps up in trip. One to watch in the betting. Race 8 (1,000m) (4) MAJOR TOMMIE is lightly raced and was not far behind in his handicap debut. He has a big weight but should be right up there. (12) B FIFTYTWO was close-up at long odds last start. He should be competitive. (11) RHYTHM is holding form and goes well on this trip. Not out of it. The form behind (10) RAFA'S BOY could be the key. He jumped seven points in the handicap for his last win but now gets a 4kg claimer aboard.

Keep highly rated trio in Metro A on the radar

It could pay to put your attention on three highly rated gallopers, Circuit Mission, Platinum Emperor and Cheval Blanc, at the Sungai Besi meeting on July 12. They are "ranked" the top three - in order of their ratings - in the handicaps of the main race coming up at the Selangor Turf Club. Three days from now, we could see them fighting out the finish in that Metro A sprint (1,400m). Circuit Mission is now sitting on 99 points. Platinum Emperor is at 98 while Cheval Blanc is - on 93 rating points - not too far behind. But being rated in the 90s is not the only thing they have in common. On the morning of July 8, all three were out on the training track and they have impressed all who were taking in the action. Taking it from the top, we have Circuit Mission running the 600m in a fluent 38.9sec. Platinum Emperor went a tick faster, clocking 38.3sec while Cheval Blanc stopped the clock at 38.7sec. Trained by Frank Maynard, Circuit Mission used to be with Lee Freedman, Cliff Brown and then James Peters at Kranji. Between Singapore and Malaysia, he has won eight races - on the Kranji, Penang and Kuala Lumpur tracks. Even before the son of High Chaparral kick-started his career in Asia, he won twice in the UK when trained by Hugo Palmer. Now, at 10, Circuit Mission showed he can still bring theatre to the game and is not about ready to be put out to pasture. The Irish-bred's last victory might have come almost a year ago in the Group 1 Penang Sprint Trophy (1,400m) on July 28, 2024, and his subsequent three runs were nothing to shout about, but he showed improvement at his last start. Ridden by Akmazani Mazuki in the Supreme A event (1,200m) on June 29, Circuit Mission would not have threatened the top three in any way, but he still made ground in the final 100m to finish fifth. Being the bread-and-butter galloper that he is, he will give his best on July 12. And, on the strength of his most recent training gallop, he could puncture a few egos. As for Platinum Emperor, he comes into the picture after a break of more than 100 days and had an easy spin under jockey Marc Lerner in a barrier trial on June 17. The Ricky Choi-trained galloper was second-up at his last run in the Group 1 Tunku Gold Cup (1,200m) on March 16. That day, under Nuqman Rozi, the Sweynesse five-year-old turned in a decent show, running third behind winner Noah Khan and runner-up, Antipodean. That came a month after Platinum Emperor had smacked his rivals in the Wilayah Silver Bowl Trophy (1,200m) on Feb 2 and won at his first race in Malaysia. Choi has been patient with the eight-time winner from Macau, who is likely to garner interest third-up. Then, from the training track, there was Cheval Blanc. The second of Maynard's pair entered for the sprint on July 12, Cheval Blanc is - like Circuit Mission - a 10-year-old Irish-bred. The son of Red Jazz has faced the starter five times this season. The last occasion was on June 29 and, in a muddling sort of race, Cheval Blanc took fourth. After the run in the Supreme A contest (1,200m), jockey Wong Kam Chong explained to the stewards that he was inconvenienced when his reins were briefly entangled over the neck of Cheval Blanc. There were no such problems during his romp under the morning sun and Maynard would have been pleased with the work put in by his old stager. Outside of that Metro A race, there was good work from Valerie Pegasus. Down to contest the Class 5A event over the short and sharp 1,020m, the five-year-old galloper tossed in a winning workout when running the 600m in 40sec. It was a solid show and very worthy of a line or two in that black book of "horses to follow". Prepared by Nick Selvan, whose last winner was Latin Legend in the Supreme B (1,600m) race on July 6, Valerie Pegasus has been winless in his next five starts after March 1, when he led from barrier to box in the Class 5A race (1,150m) at Sungai Besi. At his last start on June 15, Valerie Pegasus was outpaced in a Class 5A race (1,275m) before finishing seventh to Lightning Gal. The drop in distance could be what he is looking for and, on the back of that honest workout, his Malaysian handler could be looking at a good showing from this son of Shamexpress. brian@

Young forward Agyemang hoping to help England take off at Euro 2025

ZURICH - England's Michelle Agyemang made a big impression in less than 10 minutes at Euro 2025, and she hopes she can make the most of anytime on the pitch when the Lionesses face the Netherlands in a must-win Group D game on Wednesday. Agyemang was an 86th-minute substitute in their 2-1 loss to France in their opener on Saturday, but had more touches in the French box (five) than any other England player, had a shot on goal that was blocked, and generally caused chaos for the opposition defenders. The 19-year-old made a great case for more minutes against the Netherlands with England in danger of becoming the first holders in tournament history to be eliminated in the group stage. "I think it's easy to look at the time and think, 'Ugh, there's not enough time left,'" Agyemang told reporters on Monday. "But obviously, that's the beauty of the game. Sometimes it only takes 10 seconds to make an impact. So I think anytime on the pitch is good enough for me." Agyemang had a stunning debut in the England senior team back in April against Belgium, scoring after 41 seconds with just two touches of the ball. Asked about the pressure as a late-game substitute, Agyemang said there was none. "Going in to change a game when there's not much going your way can actually be more beneficial, you just go in and take a game by the scruff of the neck," she said. "That's how I kind of felt the other day. On another day, that could have been three points for us." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. However, Agyemang said coach Sarina Wiegman has talked to her about dialling it down a bit. "I think I've improved on it, but yeah, Lucy was saying she thinks it's a super strength of mine, and I know Lucy's physical as well, so we like going at it in training," Agyemang said. The young forward hopes to emulate Lauren James, who she highlighted as a role model and whose dynamic attacking style is similar to her own. James stepped up to be a key player in England's run to the Women's World Cup final in 2023. "LJ is one of the most technically gifted players I have ever seen, and she's so calm and collected on the ball, and you can see that whether she's in front of goal, whether she's under pressure, she knows what she's doing," Agyemang said.
