AI ‘Band' the Velvet Sundown Used Suno, Is an ‘Art Hoax,' Spokesperson Admits
'Personally, I'm interested in art hoaxes,' Frelon continues. 'The Leeds 13, a group of art students in the U.K., made, like, fake photos of themselves spending scholarship money at a beach or something like that, and it became a huge scandal. I think that stuff's really interesting.… We live in a world now where things that are fake have sometimes even more impact than things that are real. And that's messed up, but that's the reality that we face now. So it's like, 'Should we ignore that reality? Should we ignore these things that kind of exist on a continuum of real versus fake or kind of a blend between the two? Or should we dive into it and just let it be the emerging native language of the internet?''In the phone conversation Tuesday morning, Frelon originally maintained that AI was used only in brainstorming for the music, then admitted to the use of Suno but 'not in the final product,' and finally came to acknowledge that at least some songs ('I don't want to say which ones') are Suno-generated. 'I haven't admitted that to anyone else,' Frelon says. He also acknowledged employing Suno's 'Persona' feature — the same one Timbaland is using with his controversial AI artist TaTa — to maintain a consistent singer's voice across songs, although he continues to claim that's not the case on every track.

Some observers have wondered whether some kind of playlist manipulation was used to build Velvet Sundown's Spotify listenership, but Frelon dodged that question. ' I'm not running the Spotify backend stuff, so I can't super speak to exactly how that happened,' he says. 'I know we got on some playlists that just have like tons of followers, and it seems to have spiraled from there.' Did Frelon and his associates use playlists of their own to boost the process? 'I don't have an answer that I can give to you for that because I'm not involved,' he says. 'And I don't want to say something that's not true.'
The Velvet Sundown enigma began in June, when two of the band's albums suddenly appeared on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and other streaming services. A band that no one had ever heard of, and didn't seem to have any sort of digital footprint, suddenly had hundreds of thousands of listeners for music that the band described as 'fusing Seventies psychedelic textures with cinematic alt-pop and dreamy analog soul.'
But how real was it? The songs, like 'Dust on the Wind,' felt like generic reproductions of Seventies rock, and 'photographs' of the group obviously had the amber-encased glow of AI-generated content. On Reddit, two posters called out what one poster called 'a completely fake band'; musician and writer Chris Dalla Riva questioned their existence on TikTok; and the streaming service Deezer noted that 'some tracks on this album may have been created using artificial intelligence.' The site Music Ally determined that most of the Spotify playlists which featured the band came from just four Spotify accounts — and no one could explain how the band's catalog ended up on a playlist of songs evoking the Vietnam War.
Early this week, the 'band' pushed back on its X account, claiming it was 'absolutely crazy that so-called 'journalists' keep pushing the lazy, baseless theory that the Velvet Sundown is 'AI-generated' with zero evidence.… This is not a joke. This is our music, written in long, sweaty nights in a cramped bungalow in California with real instruments, real minds and real soul.' ('Then make an appearance on live TV,' responded one person on X. 'Proof [sic] it make a real video,' replied another.)
Spotify, for one, has no rules against AI music. In the past, says Glenn McDonald, a former data alchemist at Spotify, 'fake listeners were a larger problem than fake music. It might have flipped.' McDonald feels the Velvet Sundown's prominence on that platform is the result of several factors: Artists and content creators are able to pay for more exposure on playlists, he says, and the company's recommendations systems have moved 'away from understandable algorithms with strong grounding in actual human listening and communities' and toward AI-driven systems that 'can pick songs for recommendations based on characteristics of their audio.'
Added together, McDonald says, these factors 'increase the lottery-like dynamics of the system so that there are fewer reasons why a fake band couldn't be successful. Most fake bands still won't be successful, and of course nobody notices when an AI band gets no listeners, but there are no protections against it happening, and probably from Spotify's business point of view it's not even clear that this is a bad thing to be 'protected' against.' (A spokesperson for Spotify declined to comment.)
As for the viral attention Velvet Sundown has garnered, 'it's because they're AI, not because the music's great,' says one veteran A&R executive, who asked for anonymity. 'It doesn't feel authentic. That said, it's clearly just a matter of time before AI creates a genuine hit song. Not convinced yet it will create a sustainable hit artist. My prediction is that a hit song will appear that the public loves. At that point, someone will reveal it to be AI. No one will care because they love the song.'
The Velvet Sundown's Frelon, meanwhile, says that music fans need to learn to accept AI tools, calling the fear of them 'super overwrought.' 'I respect that people have really strong emotions about this,' he says. 'But I think it's important that we allow artists to experiment with new technologies and new tools, try things out, and not freak out at people just because they're using a program or not using a program. People have this idea that you have to please everybody and you have to follow the rules. And that's not how music and culture progress. Music and culture progressed by people doing weird experiments and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. And that's kind of the spirit that we're [embracing].'

Kym Marsh to star in stage thriller at Bath's Theatre Royal
KYM Marsh is starring in the stage premiere of a reimagined 90s thriller. The former Coronation Street star will lead the cast of Single White Female during its UK tour, with the play running at Bath's Theatre Royal from May 19 to 23. 'I miss Carrs Pasties': Bolton chef who helped set up one of London's top restaurants
A Bolton-born chef has become a social media sensation as co-head chef at one of London's hottest restaurants - Fallow. Will Murray, 32, from Astley Bridge, said he had a love for cooking from a young age - but had an untraditional start to his career. He went to Thornleigh Salesian College, where he chose to do work experience at a local butchers, to find out more about the butchering process. He said: 'I did work experience at Carr's Butchers on Blackburn Road – I used to buy all my meat from him and I just wanted to learn more about how it actually works.' However, when he went off to study at the University of Birmingham – his choice of degree was far removed from the culinary world. He said: 'I did classical literature and civilisation – which was just completely useless for my later career – but it means I'm quite good at researching.' Will worked alongside his studies. Will Murray (Image: Fallow) He said: 'I was working in a few pubs and bars – it was dodgy hospitality at best – I was just having a good time, honestly, and working to pay for it. 'I got away from cooking and went to uni – but after it I just got started as a pot washer in an Italian restaurant in Sheffield. 'I slowly worked my way up to Michelin-star restaurants – and moved down to London.' Eventually, Will ended up working at Heston Blumenthal's restaurant, Dinner, where he met fellow chef Jack Croft. The pair would go on to found Fallow, which would make waves on the London scene when it first opened in 2020. The restaurant has a focus on sustainability – using seasonal, local British ingredients and making sure to use every part of an ingredient. Will said: 'In short, social media is very important to restaurants, simple as that. 'In Fallow, a conservative estimate would be that about 60 per cent of our bookings come from social media – but we obviously have returning customers. 'But it's all well and good having good social media – but if the kitchen isn't running at its best – then the people won't come back. 'The hardest part of social media is we have to create new dishes – we're always working on them. 'The hard part is creating the dishes and the easy part is creating the social media.' However, now that the brand has grown so big – with two other restaurants Fowl and Roe under his belt too – managing has become a bigger part of his role. Will said: 'We try to build a strong team of people – we have 320 staff including our kitchen teams and we have to manage all of that. 'I'm definitely not cooking on the grill like I used to every day, but we have got lots of new projects that we're working on.' He said: 'I think a good bit of advice I got given was that you can always cook down, but you can never cook up. 'So for me, I didn't want to cook complicated food, but I got lots of experience in two Michelin starred restaurants. 'Another piece of advice is that staff are in really short supply these days – so it's actually quite easy to get a job. 'When you're in – make it your priority to be the best in that kitchen – be the first one in and the last one to leave.' Have a story? He said: 'Manchester has got some great restaurants now – if that was the case back in the day I might not have left Manchester. 'I might not have even left Bolton because it's so close.' He said: 'You could get two years experience there before moving down – but it's not all about London any more. 'It's moving around which is nice.' He said: 'There was a restaurant on Bradshawgate called Tiggis and if you ever did anything good at school and had something to celebrate – it would usually be there. 'Another one is The Strawbury Duck – near the reservoir. 'But the two things I miss most about Bolton are a pint of Flat Cap and a Carrs Pasty!'

I tried the Bolton version of the M&S viral sandwich and it was delightful
It's no secret by now that I love a sweet treat. So when I saw that a popular Bolton dessert parlour was offering its own version of the M&S strawberries and cream sandwich – I knew I had to try it. The M&S 'Red Diamond' sandwich has been making headlines since it was announced by the retailer. (Image: M&S/ PA) For those who are unaware, Marks & Spencer recently launched a dessert sandwich filled with strawberries and cream. The £2.80 'game-changing' limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme Sandwich is filled with the fruit and light whipped cream cheese on fluffy sweetened bread, the retailer said. M&S said its latest creation was inspired by Japanese 'sweet sandos', or fruit sandwiches. I arrived at Milk Maids, which is located on Dearden's Farm in Over Hulton, in a bid to try their new sensation. It seems everyone else had the same idea, which is a testament to the farm's popularity, and unfortunately, I was told that the strawberries and milk ice cream flavour had sold out since Milk Maids' social media post. However, they did have some Amarena Cherry flavour left, so I took a chance and tried this flavour topped with melted white chocolate. The Milk Maids version of the viral sensation. (Image: Leah Collins) I was definitely not disappointed, Milk Maids knocked it out of the park as usual, and I can see why the milk buns are so popular. The sweet texture of the bun perfectly complemented the deliciously tarte cherry flavour ice cream. It's probably tangier than its strawberry counterpart, but I honestly think this made for a richer flavour. People had the same idea, Milk Maids was very popular! (Image: Leah Collins) The white chocolate on top was a great idea, as it solidified on the cold ice cream centre and created a wonderful texture. As it was the hottest day of the year, I actually think the ice cream centre gave this the edge over the original M&S sandwich. Manager Polly Owen said: 'We saw that M&S had done the sandos and they were trending, our summer milk buns have always been popular so we decided to combine the two. Manager Polly Owen. Overall, I would recommend the Milk Maids 'strawberries and cream' milk bun to anyone who is looking for a sweet treat. Whether you're looking to compare it to its M&S counterpart, or just after a sweet treat in the sunshine – the milk bun is really second to none.
