Fontenot delivers in Cowgirl win
The Cowgirls are making walk-off wins a habit.
Top-seeded McNeese was pushed to the brink for the second time in the Lake Charles bracket, winning only with one final swing.
Nyjah Fontenot's sharp single up the middle scored pinch-runner Rylee Eyster from second with two out in the bottom of the seventh Saturday to give McNeese a 4-3 victory over Incarnate Word.
The win was the Cowgirls' third straight walk-off win in postseason play at Joe Miller Ballpark, dating back to the championship game of 2022.
Fontenot's winner came after the Cardinal (28-20) had rallied from three runs down to tie the game at 3-3.
'That was a really good softball game,' said McNeese head coach James Landreneau. 'We bounced back from them tying it and regained the momentum. It's a big win.'
The victory sends the top-seeded Cowgirls (39-18) into the title game on Sunday at 1 p.m. They will face the Saturday night's matchup winner between No. 4 UIW and No. 5 Lamar. McNeese will have to win once on Sunday to host the best-of-3 championship series against No. 2 seed Southeastern starting Thursday.
An Arkansas transfer, Fontenot ensured McNeese stayed in the winner's bracket.
'I had an idea of what I wanted to do,' said Fontenot. 'I didn't want to overdo it, so I just put a good swing on it.'
The rally started with a one-out pinch-hit single from Gwinn Hall. Eyster ran for Hall, and one out later was on second, after Kassidy Chance singled to leave, setting up Fontenot.
'Nyjah was able to come up with that big hit for us,' said Landreneau. 'We just keep working and trying to make something happen.'
Senior Reese Reyna had another big tournament game. The shortstop went 3-for-3 and scored two runs. She has four straight hits in this tournament.
'Just playing one pitch at a time,' said Reyna. 'We trust everybody in our lineup. You just have to do it when you get your shot.'
Rylie Bouvier drove in a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and double as McNeese took a 3-0 lead after four innings. But a two-run homer by Prisias Quintero, her first of the season, cut the McNeese lead to 3-2 in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Cardinals tied the game with a run without a hit, scoring on a groundout to second to tie the game.
McNeese freshman Maddie Taylor started, was replaced for two-thirds of an inning by Ryann Schexnayder, and returned to get the win and improve to 17-7. The Pitcher of the Year finished her 6⅓ innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
The victory was McNeese's 44th straight over the last three years at home against Southland opponents and 16th in their last 17 games overall.
'I thought Maddie pitched a really good game,' said Landreneau. 'When I took her out, we told her to stay in the game, we might bring her back. That's not always easy, but she did it.'
The game was originally scheduled for Friday night; however, the heavy rains washed things back to Saturday and into Sunday.

While we are still a little under 50 days from the start of the college football season kicking off, the sport is back on the forefront of many fans' minds thanks to the release of EA Sports' College Football 26. College Football 26 is the second game in the series since its return from an 11-year-long hiatus and looks to deliver the best and most authentic college football experience to date. With updates to the wear-and-tear system and bringing in most of the sport's most iconic coaches, any college football fan will put untold hours into this year's title. However, as a new game rounds the bend, one question for players: What school will I use for my first dynasty? Picking which school to lead to a national championship each year is always a struggle, but luckily for you, I've narrowed it down to two perfect teams to use in this year's game. Houston Cougars Houston comes in as the worst-rated team in the Big 12 Conference, with a 3-star prestige rating and an overall rating of 77. After a much-needed uniform refresh in the offseason, Houston is the obvious pick from the conference. Plus, you could always wear the Houston Oiler-colored throwbacks for every game; that's what I would do. Houston was one of four teams to join the Big 12, alongside UCF, BYU and Cincinnati in 2023, giving you a near blank slate in a Power Four conference. The school's geographical location provides a ton of natural rivalries with Baylor, Rice and Texas A&M, along with the conference rivals you make along the way. The Cougars' roster provides a lot of intrigue heading into the 2025 season. Can you rebuild the career of former 5-star Conner Weigman, or will you lean on last year's starter Zeon Chriss? If neither of those pans out, you can always rely on the great state of Texas producing the flashiest wide receiver and quarterback prospects in the country. With great uniforms, a clean slate and a state that breathes football, Houston will make a fantastic dynasty team in College Football 26. Ball State Cardinals With two teams, Delaware and Missouri State, making the jump to the FBS and therefore joining the game this year, most people will likely look to those two for their first real rebuild. However, let's break out of the mold a little bit and take a look at Ball State. The second-lowest-rated team in the game, aside from Akron, the Ball State Cardinals offer some very fun uniforms. I especially dig the Cardinal on the helmet, and it's hard to mess up that majestic black and red color scheme. The Cardinals reside in the Mid-American Conference, giving you a chance to take over some Tuesday-night "MACation", a thing every college football fan dreams of. If you want a blank slate to make your own, there's no school better than Ball State, which has been playing FBS football for 42 years but has only made it to nine bowl games. Of the nine, the Cardinals have won exactly one, and it came in 2020 against San Jose State. The Cardinals have ongoing rivalries with Miami (OH) and Northern Illinois, fellow MAC opponents for now. However, residing in the Midwest means you can easily transition to the Big Ten once you've dominated the MAC. For my money, there's no better school to rebuild in College Football 26 than the Ball State Cardinals. Bill Armstrong promises to be true to himself as he takes over the Cowboys. (Roderick Anderson/American Press) B ill Armstrong isn't Will Wade. He isn't the complete opposite of him either. In many ways, the new McNeese State men's basketball coach is nothing like his predecessor. Wade was a two-year wild ride through the raging rapids. Armstrong is more like a pleasure cruise over calm seas. But in a few key areas, they're very much alike. 'Will is like a brother to me,' Armstrong said. 'He is one of my best friends in the world. We just go about things differently.' That is apparent just by watching the two go through film sessions with their players. Armstrong's voice stayed smooth while Wade's could peel the paint off the walls of the Legacy Center. Armstrong is your chemistry professor, trying to get you to understand a toxic formula that could be used in the high school lab. Wade, the gym teacher, is attempting to get you to do 10 more push-ups. Both have the same goal: to teach, but they approach it in very unique ways. However, don't be confused by the easy-going demeanor of Armstrong; he has just as big a fire inside him, roaring to win. 'We are both very, very competitive,' said Armstrong. 'I want to win just like he does. That's why I came here. I want to build on what he started.' And when his players mess up in practice, Armstrong is more than capable of getting them back on track, but he does it his way. Wade took McNeese to two straight Southland Conference championships and their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory last spring when they beat Clemson. Despite it all, Armstrong isn't worried about filling any shoes. Armstrong takes over for Wade, whom he worked for at LSU, after two historic seasons. The Cowboys went 58-11, including 41-2 against the Southland, with postseason results included. That only made the job more attractive to Armstrong, who is getting his first chance at being a college head coach. 'Not many people get the opportunity to take over a program that's doing so well,' Armstrong said. 'Usually, you have to take over a bad team and build it. This is special because we're ready to keep on winning.' One fan Armstrong doesn't have to win over? Will Wade. He fully endorses his friend's hiring and is behind him 100 percent. 'He is going to make you guys forget all about me,' said Wade. 'There is no bigger fan of Bill Armstrong or McNeese basketball than me. 'Bill is the most consistent person I have been around. You know what to expect and what you are going to get from him every day.' Armstrong took over the program just days after Wade accepted his new gig at North Carolina State, taking a good portion of his staff with him. The transition to Armstrong, who came over after spending one season as an assistant at Baylor, could not have gone smoother. 'Bill has done a fantastic job since being hired,' said McNeese Athletic Director Heath Schroyer. 'I could not have asked for more from him and his staff. 'He's his own man and has his own personality, but the nuts and bolts of the program and how it's run on a day-to-day basis? It's the same.' And the standards are the same, too. 'Our expectations for this program remain just as high,' said Schroyer. 'I do not doubt at all that Coach Armstrong will continue to move this program forward.' Armstrong and Wade are connected through their LSU hardships. Both were let go over recruiting allegations that rocked the Tiger program at the time. Armstrong wondered if he'd ever get a shot at the head coach's gig. 'You think about that, and it was a low point,' said Armstrong. 'You wonder if you will ever get to tell your story and if anybody will ever take a chance on you.' Armstrong ended up in the head coach's chair at Link Academy, a nationally elite high school basketball program in Missouri. He won a national title and went to another Final Four in his two seasons before Baylor. Armstrong understands what it means to get a second chance; he just doesn't talk about it as openly as Wade does. 'I use that chip on my shoulder a little differently than Will,' Armstrong said. 'But I am just as appreciative of McNeese and this community for embracing me, my family and my staff. They have been great to all of us. 'I could not have drawn things up moving here any better. Now we want to just keep winning and take this program to an even higher level.' With that, he sounds (at least a little) like… You know who.

Who will Caitlin Clark pick? Who will Napheesa Collier take? The WNBA All-Star Game captains will select their rosters in a draft at 7 p.m. (ET) Tuesday, airing on ESPN's 'WNBA Countdown.' Choosing their season-long teammates or optimizing their rosters with a balance of guards and bigs? Lots of interesting decisions await. Our WNBA experts at , Sabreena Merchant and Ben Pickman, joined 'No Offseason' host Zena Keita to take on the task in a mock draft. Based on a coin flip, Pickman represented Team Clark, and Merchant represented Napheesa Collier. Pickman: I'm going to take the other best player available. Before I get into the positional weeds, I will go with A'ja Wilson. We know Caitlin Clark is going to take Aliyah Boston first, but I personally, as Ben Pickman, will be taking A'ja Wilson. Merchant: I'm going to take (Breanna Stewart). Pickman: Give me Sabrina Ionescu. Guards have won the WNBA All-Star MVP every year since 2013. … Give me Sabrina for some more shooting. Merchant: We'll keep the UConn train rolling here. I'll take Paige. Keita: Staying within the lineage. Geno would be proud, Phee. OK, Caitlin, you're up. Pickman: Paige was going to be my next choice, so I have to reevaluate this draft. I am going to take Allisha Gray. Keita: Oh my gosh, just guard heavy over here. Pickman: All-Star Game performer. Keita: Whether she shows up in the game or the skills or anything, you know she's got a good track record coming in from last year. So far, Caitlin only has one big. Phee, you've got two bigs and Paige. Where do you want to go next? Merchant: There's no more guards left in this pool, so we'll just keep choosing bigs. That's fine. I'll go with Nneka (Ogwumike). Keita: Going across the country to Stanford. Merchant: No more UConns left. What are you going to do? Keita: They'll take the Cardinal in nicely. OK, Caitlin, who do you want next? Pickman: Again, because I am playing the role of myself, I am taking Satou Sabally. That means Aliyah Boston will get assigned to Sabreena's Napheesa Collier WNBA All-Star draft with Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier is tonight — but will air said 'I think there's a high chance that Kels and AB are on my team.'That's the goal. You've got first pick, so you've got a chance to maybe bolster your perimeter. Merchant: Yeah, I think that's going to be necessary. I'm going to have to take some guards here. Very good guard group in the reserve selection. We can have some fun here. I do think … I kind of want some shooting. Let's go Kelsey Mitchell. I've got two Indiana people in Indiana at least, trying to make up for the fact that Caitlin's on the other team. Keita: That's OK. Caitlin will have to be on the sideline watching her pick-and-roll executed right in front of her. All right, Caitlin, what you want? Pickman: Before I make a total strategy shift, I'm going to take Kelsey Plum, and just continue to load up on guards. Kelsey Plum, a former All-Star Game MVP. Reunite her with A'ja Wilson in this game. Keita: There's a lot of size over here on the Phee side. Merchant: I feel good about it. It's all very versatile size. Stewie played the five over the weekend. She could easily play the one or the two for this particular roster. Keita: You pretty much have a team that can take the ball off the rim and go, outside of Aliyah Boston, maybe. Let's keep going, Phee, what do you want? Merchant: Speaking of players who can take the ball off the rim and go, I'm tempted to take Alyssa Thomas here, but she has not shown a lot of interest in All-Star Games before. So I'm not sure if this is the play that I want to take her. Let's just get a little more ballhandling. I'm going to go with Skylar Diggins. Keita: Love that choice. Skylar Diggins and Nneka getting to play again together. I like it. Caitlin, what's the rebuttal? Pickman: I'm going to take Angel (Reese). A little size, frontcourt presence and rebounding. Caitlin team's … let's go guards. You've got Caitlin, but Caitlin's still dealing with that groin injury. Kelsey Plum, Allisha Gray, Sabrina Ionescu. That's some solid (guard play). Alyssa Thomas and Angel Reese, both players who can give you that frontcourt size but also the ability to take the ball and go and distribute. … You've got some versatility. And then Satou Sabally, of course, that can play three, four, two, whatever you want. OK, Caitlin's team's looking solid. And of course, A'ja Wilson, you can never doubt her. Then Phee's team: You've got Napheesa Collier, Paige Bueckers, Nneka Ogumike, Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell, Skylar Diggins, Courtney Williams. I like this veteran presence in the guards. This is cool. I like this. You've got some veterans that know how to be All-Stars, know how to play the game, know how to entertain us in the All-Star Game, and are also very competitive. I feel like this game might get spicy the way you have this broken out. Let's round out. You each have three more picks. Merchant: I am going to take Jackie Young. Pickman: I will keep a reunion together. I will take Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream, pairs with Allisha Gray. Keita: Very nice. Big guard energy. Phee, who do you want next? Merchant: We can keep all the Storm together. I'll take Gabby Williams. Pickman: We have three players left: Sonia Citron, Kayla Thornton and Kiki Iriafen. All three first-timers. Who is going to have the best game in an All-Star Game context? These are all good teammates, can be unselfish players at times. It'll be interesting to see if any of them have big games when the actual exhibition kicks off. I am going to take Kayla Thornton. I think repping for the Valkyries, wanting to show out for the expansion fans in this game. Keita: Now, Phee, you have a choice between two rookies. The Mystics. You've got to break them up regardless. Which one do you want? Merchant: I think I'm going to take Citron. I'm a little worried about leaving all of the really good offensive rebounders on Team Caitlin, but every time I see Citron guard Paige Bueckers, I don't think Paige likes it, so we're going to keep Citron. Keita: That means Caitlin / Ben, you're rounding out with Kiki Irafen. You've got some solid size presence. You had me in the first half, a little concerned, but now you've rounded out nicely with your reserves.
