Court orders Arnie Teves transfer to Camp Bagong Diwa
A Manila court has denied the motion of former Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo 'Arnie' Teves Jr. to remain detained under the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) at the New Bilibid Prison.
In a 5-page order, the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 51 issued a commitment order transferring Teves from the NBI to the Metro Manila District Jail (MMDJ) in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City.
Branch 51 handles the Teves murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder case over the alleged killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and 10 others in 2023.
'This Court finds no merit in the motion of the accused to maintain his custody with the NBI detention facility,' the Court said.
In his motion, Teves' camp expressed concern over his safety. It also cited the Certificate of Handover signed by the Timor-Leste and Philippine government prior to the deportation.
However, the RTC said the certificate does not state that a specific agency must take custody of Teves as a prerequisite for his transfer.
It also did not give weight to Teves' claim that he may be subjected to torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
'While the detention facilities in our country may not possess the luxuries a person may have been accustomed to, the detention therein does not automatically make it inhuman or degrading treatment upon one detainee's mere say so,' it said.
'Aside from this claim, the court failed to see any threats against the safety and life of the accused Teves, Jr. mentioned in the motion and how letting him remain in the custody of the NBI facility will secure him against said threats,' it added.
The Court said that it appears that Teves is choosing his detention facility 'for his own convenience.'
GMA News Online has asked the NBI regarding the possible transfer.
The Manila RTC Branch 12, which is handling Teves' illegal possession of firearms and explosives case, has previously ordered his transfer to the Manila City Jail.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago, however, held off the transfer, explaining that several courts are handling Teves' cases and may order his detention in other areas.
Teves and several others have also been charged with the alleged killings of three individuals in Negros Oriental in 2019.
He and 12 others have also been designated as terrorists by the Anti-Terrorism Council, citing several alleged killings and harassment in Negros Oriental. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Pangasinan court acquits 102 of unlawful possession raps
A court in Rosales, Pangasinan has acquitted 102 individuals of unlawful possession charges over numerous counterfeit products seized during a search and seizure of a warehouse in Rosales in 2023. In a 29-page joint resolution, the Rosales Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 53 acquitted the individuals for failure of the prosecution to prove their guilt due to insufficiency of evidence. They were charged with unlawful possession of false counterfeit Internal Revenue Stamps, unlawful possession of apparatus or mechanical contrivance for the manufacture of cigarettes, unlawful possession of cigarette tipping paper or cigarette filter tips, and unlawful possession or removal of articles subject to excise tax without payment of tax. 'In the instant cases, the prosecution failed to establish that the search and seizure conducted was based on a valid search warrant nor that the same falls under any of the exceptions thereto,' it said. The RTC said that there was no valid search warrant issued for the operation of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) raiding team and police officers. 'The BIR, like any other police or law enforcement agency, is not exempt from the fundamental requirement of obtaining a search warrant from the court before making searches and seizures,' it said. According to the court, the illegality of the search and seizure results in the inadmissibility of the objects seized. It added that failure to comply with the chain of custody rule also tainted the integrity of the objects seized, rendering them inadmissible. The court ordered the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Balungao, Pangasinan to release the accused. Hontiveros to file NBI complaint vs people behind alyas Rene video
Senator Risa Hontiveros on Monday said her legal team will file a complaint with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against those behind the circulating video of a man who claimed that he was influenced to testify against detained pastor Apollo Quiboloy. Hontiveros was referring to the video of Michael Maurilio or alias "Rene," who alleged that he was paid by the lawmaker to speak lies against Quiboloy, former President Rodrigo Duterte, and Vice President Sara Duterte during a hearing of the Senate committee on women, children, family relations, and gender equality. The senator, in return, called the video 'fake news' and 'witness tampering' as she presented proof in a press conference that alias Rene was not coerced to testify against Quiboloy and the Dutertes. Chinese allegedly posing as Filipino arrested by BI in Camarines Norte

File photo A Chinese national allegedly pretending to be a Filipino was arrested by intelligence agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI). The BI said it arrested Wu Zhishi, 45, in Daet, Camarines Norte on June 25, the BI said in a press release. The arrest was done in coordination with government intelligence operatives, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Presidential Anti Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), it added. Agents pretended to be customers in Wu's business prior to the arrest. Wu allegedly uses illegally acquired government-issued documents and claims to be a Filipino in various transactions. During the arrest, Wu presented an expired retiree's visa card and denied he assumed a fake Philippine identity. However, the BI said he reportedly used Philippine identification cards in securing a license to own and possess a firearm. Wu was transferred to the custody of the PAOCC. However, "[h]is legal custody remains with the BI as he undergoes deportation proceedings for violation of Philippine immigration laws," the BI said. BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado called on government agencies to tighten measures to ensure that only Filipinos get to secure Philippine IDs. 'We have raised this concern before and we are raising it again...
