Oman and Dutch films highlight environmental collaboration
The screening event was inaugurated by H E Stella Kloth, Ambassador of Netherlands to Oman, who highlighted the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries. She emphasised the significance of the shared maritime history and its continuing influence on environmental collaboration today. 'This event underscores the shared importance we place on preserving our natural world and its ecosystems – values that are deeply woven into both our histories,' she said.
Omani filmmaker Maisa al Hooti presented her acclaimed documentary Wild Oman: The Wonder of Arabia, which explores the country's diverse natural landscapes, from deserts and mountains to its rich marine life. She shared her inspiration behind the project which was to spotlight Oman's biodiversity and promote environmental awareness.
The event also featured a presentation by Dutch filmmaker Ruben Smit, who showcased excerpts from his documentary WAD, focused on the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe's most vital ecosystems.
Smit highlighted the growing challenges posed by climate change on coastal regions and called for stronger international cooperation to safeguard these fragile environments. 'We face many challenges in preserving our natural environments,' he said. 'Films like WAD are a call to acti- on, reminding us of the urgent ne-ed to protect and restore our natural world for future generations.'
The event reinforced the shared commitment of Oman and the Netherlands to environmental sustainability and cultural exchange, reflecting their deep-rooted ties that continue to evolve through cooperation.

Families flock abroad as summer travel surges
Muscat – With schools closed for the summer and temperatures rising across the sultanate, a growing number of Omani and expatriate families are heading overseas for vacations. Travel agencies in Muscat have reported a marked increase in international bookings in recent weeks, with destinations such as Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia, United Kingdom and several European cities proving popular. For many, these trips combine leisure with cultural experiences or long-postponed family reunions. Muscat International Airport has seen a steady rise in passenger traffic since early May. Officials said weekends are witnessing peak volumes. They urged travellers to ensure their documents are in order and arrive early. A spokesperson of Oman Airports confirmed the increased passenger numbers and stated that teams are working to ensure smooth operations and minimise delays. According to local travel consultants, bookings have gone up significantly compared to last year. Families are planning earlier and choosing destinations that are family-friendly, have cultural appeal and straightforward visa procedures. Travel advisor Ahlam al Busaidi noted that Turkey, the UK and Southeast Asia are among the top choices for Omani families this year. Expatriate residents are taking advantage of the summer break to visit home. Many are combining holidays with family visits after long separations. Suresh Nair, an Indian expatriate travelling to Kerala with his wife and children, said he was excited to meet relatives after nearly three years. 'My children are looking forward to seeing their grandparents,' he said. Despite the enthusiasm, ticketing agents have noted concerns over rising airfares and accommodation costs. In some sectors, ticket prices have gone up by as much as 30%. Travel advisor Fatma al Lawati asked families to book early and consider flexible dates. 'It's important to check passport validity, visa requirements and ensure that all travel documents are in order,' she said. Authorities and travel consultants urged travellers to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to departure and stay informed about visa and health guidelines at their destinations. Through its Travel Health Service, Ministry of Health has issued guidelines to support families travelling with children. The advisory recommends packing suitable clothing for the destination and preparing children in advance, especially for long flights or drives. If a child experiences ear pain during flight, breastfeeding, eating or chewing gum may help relieve the discomfort. The ministry also advises maintaining regular sleep cycles to ensure children get adequate rest during travel.

Khareef Dhofar media programmes from today
SALALAH: The Ministry of Information will launch today the media programmes accompanying the Khareef Dhofar (monsoon) Season 2025 as part of a comprehensive plan to highlight the tourism, cultural, natural and heritage attractions of Dhofar Governorate during the season. The integrated plan, running until August 31, includes producing and broadcasting visual, audio and digital programmes with interactive content and live field coverage to ensure wide outreach locally and internationally. Oman TV will begin its coverage with the programme 'People and Khareef', returning this year with a refreshed, more in-depth format. The daily show (2:30 pm – 4 pm) will feature diverse locations showcasing Dhofar's landscapes and tourism activities, with participation from Omani and GCC media professionals as well as Arab journalists. The evening programme 'Khareef Nights' will broadcast live from the 'Return of the Past' event site in Al Saada, Salalah (9 pm – 10 pm) on Oman General and Oman Cultural channels, covering heritage, cultural and artistic activities. Oman Radio will air Khareef's Radio Programme codenamed 'Atheer' daily (5 pm – 7 pm) from the 'Return of the Past' location, featuring studio interviews, AI-powered segments on Dhofar, and live video content shared via the ministry's and radio's platforms. Youth Radio will broadcast 'Khareef and Youth' from Jabal Ateen studio (2 pm – 4 pm daily), focusing on artistic, cultural and social themes for young audiences. Oman News Agency (ONA) has commenced its coverage with news reports, features, photos and videos across digital platforms, social media and smart apps, as well as radio/TV bulletins, highlighting tourism assets and socio-cultural interactions. Oman newspaper continues its coverage (since June 21) through print/digital reports and social media, offering rich content on the festivities. Moreover, the Ministry of Information's General Directorate of Digital Media enhances engagement via interactive competitions, drone-captured scenic vignettes and multilingual visitor interviews. The 'Ayn' platform provides live coverage from Oman Radio and TV for all programmes and activities related to the Khareef Dhofar Season. Ayn also launched a children's programme promoting Dhofar as a family-friendly destination through edutainment content. Furthermore, Oman's Information Portal, available in eight languages (Arabic, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and German), features dedicated khareef content to amplify Oman's global digital presence. Fanja Heritage House: A legacy bridging authenticity and modernity
BIDBID: In a historical corner where ancestral heritage and the echoes of the past intertwine, an ancient house stands as a witness to time, transforming into a vibrant economic project that harmonises tradition with modernity, heritage with investment. Located in the village of Fanja in Bidbid, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Fanja Heritage House revives the spirit of a decades-old ancestral home, now repurposed as both a heritage museum and a boutique guesthouse. It attracts visitors from across Oman, offering an escape from urban bustle and an ideal retreat for families and friends. This project exemplifies how cultural identity can be leveraged to serve sustainable development. Saif bin Nasser al Rawahi, a photographer and the project's owner, has infused this unique initiative with artistic and innovative touches. He explains that the house belonged to his family for nearly 40 years before being converted into a tourist destination two years ago. The heritage house comprises three sections: A cafe serving diverse Omani cuisine, surrounded by seating areas scattered throughout the property; an exploration zone where visitors wander through the house's nooks, encountering animals and lush greenery along stairways and bridges leading to Fanja Valley's terrace; and a guesthouse for those seeking an overnight stay immersed in heritage. Thanks to its seamless blend of nature and Omani heritage, the site has welcomed 160,000 visitors from over 63 countries as of May 2025. This success reflects both Omani youth's innovative spirit and tourists' eagerness to explore the region's ancient environments amid Oman's rapid modernisation. The heritage exhibition is divided into three sections: Traditional Omani attire, showcasing cultural diversity; artefacts, including woodwork, palm-frond crafts, silverware and jewellery; and photographs capturing Oman's unique cultural landscapes, customs and folk heritage. Al Rawahi highlighted the guesthouse's distinctive architecture, where water channels weave through its facilities, creating a serene aesthetic that underscores Omanis' mastery of traditional construction techniques. Fanja Heritage House stands as a testament to Oman's ability to honour its past while embracing the future — a model of cultural preservation driving sustainable tourism. - ONA
