Zahid outlines BN strategy to recapture three Lumut seats

The Star2 days ago
LUMUT: Barisan Nasional is determined to recapture three seats in Lumut currently held by Perikatan Nasional, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Barisan chairman said the three seats are the Lumut parliamentary seat as well as the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats.
He outlined four conditions he said are critical to regaining voter confidence and winning the seats in the 16th General Election.
"Firstly, Umno and Barisan leaders in Lumut must stand united, with no room for division. Our political opponents are not as strong as we think… it is our internal weaknesses and the loss of confidence in our own party that have hurt our cause the most.
"Old habits such as backstabbing, blaming leaders and finger-pointing must stop immediately.
"Unity within the Lumut division is the first and foremost condition for victory," he said when officiating the Lumut Umno representatives meeting at Dewan Merdeka, Majlis Perbandaran Manjung on Sunday (July 6).
Also present were Perak Umno chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Ahmad Zahid also said victory cannot be achieved alone, and urged Umno members to strengthen ties with their partners in MIC and MCA who are currently facing challenging times.
"They stood by us during our hardship. Now it is our turn to support them, to ensure Umno and Barisan candidates dominate both state and parliamentary seats again. The same goes for our cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, " he said.
Thirdly, he asked the party to let go of the past and accept today's political reality.
"As part of the government, we can no longer act like the dominant party of the past, making demands at will. The people are watching and evaluating our maturity. Arrogance and pride must be abandoned,
"We must show that Umno has changed, ready to regain public trust through humility and wise strategy," he said.
Zahid also highlighted the importance of social media as a critical battleground, especially among young voters.
"Youth and Puteri Umno must lead the digital narrative. Engaging voters with relevant, respectful, and convincing content is essential in rebuilding trust.
"This is our final opportunity to win back all three seats in Lumut. We must not waste it, " he said.

Brazil reaffirms long-term commitment to ASEAN partnership

KUALA LUMPUR: Brazil has reinforced its dedication to fostering a strong and progressive partnership with ASEAN, highlighting the bloc's role in promoting peace and economic integration. Maria Laura da Rocha, Brazil's Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs, emphasised the significance of the Brazil-ASEAN trilateral meeting as a key step in deepening engagement. 'The Brazil-ASEAN trilateral meeting is a milestone in Brazil's ever-closer engagement with ASEAN. Our shared objective is to steadily deepen this partnership,' she said during the second trilateral meeting between Malaysia, Brazil, and the ASEAN Secretariat. The meeting, held under Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' was chaired by Malaysia's Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin. Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for the Political-Security Community, Datuk Astanah Abdul Aziz, also attended. Rocha expressed optimism that the discussions would strengthen mutual trust and explore new avenues for collaboration. Meanwhile, Amran highlighted the potential for ASEAN and Brazil to work together on global issues such as multilateralism and peace. 'ASEAN and Brazil share the same aspirations for peace, stability, prosperity, equality, justice, and humanity,' he said. He also pointed to Brazil's contributions in sustainable energy and agriculture as key areas of cooperation. Amran stressed the importance of collective advocacy for conflict resolution, particularly in Gaza, urging accountability for violations of international law. He noted Brazil's role in supporting ASEAN's sustainability goals through biofuel projects and capacity-building initiatives. 'Together, ASEAN and Brazil will advance the interests of the Global South,' he added. - Bernama

Zahid apologises for ‘angel' remark, says it was emotionally-driven

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was seen in a viral video saying that even an angel would have fled if appointed Umno president during the party's most difficult times. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has apologised for a controversial remark he made in a recent speech, saying it was said in an emotional moment and might have caused confusion. In a video that has gone viral, Zahid is seen saying that even an angel would have fled if appointed Umno president during the party's most difficult times. 'The truth is, the statement came from a deeply emotional setting, as an attempt to describe how challenging the tests of leadership can be. 'However, I acknowledge that the comparison has created confusion and could be misinterpreted,' he said in a Facebook post. Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said he humbly sought forgiveness from Allah and apologised to everyone for what he said was a 'misstep' in his choice of words. 'As a Muslim and a leader of a party that upholds Islamic values, principles, and scholarly traditions, I sincerely seek forgiveness from Allah and apologise to all for this lapse. 'I accept all criticism with an open heart. I believe that a true leader is not only careful with his words, but also sincere in reflecting, improving, and learning from his mistakes,' he said. Earlier today, Harakahdaily quoted Kluang PAS chief Nor Mohamad as saying that Zahid's remark involving angels in the context of political leadership was 'excessive and inappropriate'. He said the statement should be examined seriously from the standpoint of Islamic creed and religious decorum. He also urged the relevant authorities, such as the Islamic development department and the National Fatwa Council, to review the remark and issue an official stance to prevent similar incidents in the future. Zahid made the original remarks while addressing delegates at the Sri Gading Umno division meeting in Batu Pahat over the weekend. Defending party loyalty, he said Umno had gone through immense trials in the past, including the seizure of party assets and the freezing of its accounts. 'I and many other leaders were tested. If an angel had been made Umno president at that time, perhaps even he would have fled in the night,' he had said.

Zahid: Mara will adopt girl who lost family in Sg Korok tragedy

JITRA: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will adopt the 12-year-old girl who lost her family in the Sungai Korok tragedy and support her until she reaches university. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government, through Mara, would ensure Putri Qisya Nur Izzat Mohamad Azim Izat's welfare. Her parents and four siblings died after the family car plunged into Sungai Korok. Their bodies were retrieved yesterday. "I advised her to be a pious girl as the prayers of a pious child for their parents are always accepted. "I encouraged her to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and Yasin often for her late parents and siblings," Zahid said after visiting the girl and her extended family in Jerlun today. He said arrangements have been made for the girl to attend Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) next year. "I told her to study hard and get good grades. Insya-Allah, MRSM is waiting. "She has agreed and so have her grandparents, Insya-Allah. We will make every effort to ensure she gets the opportunities and support she needs." He said Mara would ensure her welfare and academic future are taken care of. On safety concerns at the site of the tragedy, Zahid, who is rural and regional development minister, said his ministry would consider installing guardrails and streetlights along the dark stretch of road there and nearby. He said he would bring the matter to the attention of relevant parties to expedite action. Six members of a family were reported missing on Saturday. The bodies of Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, his wife Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, and their four children, Putra Rayyan Nur, 9, Hawa Adriana Nur, 8, Annayla Humaira Nur, 7, and six-month-old Tuah Haydar, were found inside a Proton Iswara that sank in Sungai Korok. Initial investigations suggest the vehicle might have skidded off the road and into the river while the family was on the way home to Jerlun from a relative's house in Taman Seri Aman, Jitra.
