Congress rules out leadership change in Karnataka, S Jaishankar slams terrorism at Quad meet

India Today5 days ago
The Congress party in Karnataka is experiencing internal tensions regarding the chief ministership. MLA Iqbal Hussain claims that over 100 of 136 Congress legislators support Deputy CM DK Shivakumar taking over as CM. He alleges that the party high command had agreed to a 2.5-year term each for current CM Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. However, the party's state in-charge Randeep Surjewala has dismissed any talk of leadership change. Siddaramaiah's supporters insist he will complete his full 5-year term until 2028. This situation raises questions about Congress' ability to balance its OBC and Vokkaliga vote bases ahead of future elections. While the party maintains a united front publicly, political analysts suggest underlying differences remain.
In other news, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a strong statement on terrorism at the Quad Foreign Ministers meeting in Washington DC. He emphasized that the world must display zero tolerance towards terrorism and victims should never be equated with perpetrators. Jaishankar asserted India's right to defend its people against terrorism and expects Quad partners to understand this position. His remarks come in the context of recent experiences and amid reports of Pakistan's army chief being hosted at the White House. The minister also mentioned India's plans to host the next Quad Summit and proposals to make it productive. This statement underscores India's consistent stance on terrorism and sends a clear message to Quad partners, especially the United States, on India's expectations regarding counterterrorism efforts.

Lies being spread, no photo of Rahul Gandhi on sanitary pads: Pramod Tiwari

Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari on Sunday said that lies are being spread by pasting Rahul Gandhi's picture on sanitary pads. He said that the fake video posted on social media reflects the poor thinking of the BJP. A controversy erupted in poll-bound Bihar after a photograph of Rahul Gandhi was seen featuring prominently on sanitary pad packets, being distributed under the Congress party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, aimed at raising menstrual hygiene awareness among women in the state. The Congress launched the initiative as part of a larger campaign for women voters in the state. In a special conversation with IANS, the Congress MP Tiwari said, "The government has failed on the safety and health of women, so the Congress distributed sanitary pads with its limited resources. But the BJP is spreading lies on social media by putting a fake photo of Rahul Gandhi on these pads; there was no photo on the pad. Tiwari called it a shameful, disgusting and cheap act, which reflects the mentality of BJP supporters." Cornering the government on the voter list controversy that started before the Bihar Assembly elections, he said that if someone has an Aadhaar card and is residing in an area, then his name should be added to the voter list. But the Election Commission is also rejecting the Aadhaar card, and citizens are being asked for their 'horoscopes'. The Bharatiya Janata Party itself had said in Parliament that the Aadhaar card is proof of Indianness, so why is the same proof not valid now? Tiwari also spoke on the arrest of Nirav Modi's brother, Nehal Modi. He said that when the investigations of CBI and ED were going on, on whose orders were such criminals allowed to flee abroad? Reminding of the old promises, the Congress leader stated that PM Modi had said that Dawood Ibrahim would be brought to India in six months. Now I want to ask, where is Dawood? What happened to terrorists like Masood Azhar, Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim? Can the BJP government give any details of the action taken against them? The Congress MP also talked about Operation Sindoor. He said, 'During 'Operation Sindoor' carried out by the Indian Air Force, the Foreign Minister informed Pakistan that we would attack terrorist hideouts. The result was that the attack was only on terrorist hideouts, and all the terrorists moved away from there. The hard work of our brave soldiers did not have the full effect. After all, the government should tell where the terrorists were killed, how many were killed, and what their names are. Where is the list of the terrorists who were killed?' He further said that this is a direct compromise with national security, and the government should decide its accountability.

CPI(M) directs rank and file to defend Veena George

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Sunday reportedly issued a strict directive to its rank-and-file to defend Health Minister Veena George after some party members made critical comments on social media about the Minister's 'style of functioning.' The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought to weaponise those comments against Ms. George, who is at the centre of a political storm following a building collapse at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) last Thursday killed a caregiver and injured two others. Public rally in Kottayam On Sunday, the CPI(M) Pathanamthitta district secretariat reportedly instructed the relevant lower committees to take action against party members responsible for the social media posts. Moreover, it has also announced a mammoth public rally in Kottayam on July 10 to expose what the CPI(M) has termed a Congress-BJP plot to vilify Kerala's robust and nationally acclaimed public health sector. Later, the party will hold similar meetings at the panchayat level. Last Friday, CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan accused both parties of politicising the tragic building collapse to paint a dismal picture of State-funded hospitals, thereby aiding private hospitals coral patients. He noted that corporates, with scant regard for medical ethics or patient welfare, had acquired most of the legacy hospitals in the private sector in Kerala. He said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had invested nearly ₹1,600 crore in State-funded hospitals, including addition of beds, operating theatres, modern diagnostic tools, and super-specialty units, such as liver and kidney transplant departments, to protect the working class from predatory medical practices. He said the patient numbers in government hospitals had increased by 50% since 2021, depriving the private sector of business. Protests continue Meanwhile, the tide of protests against Ms. George showed little signs of abating. In Pathanamthitta, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Pazhakulam Madhu said party activists would boycott the Minister at public functions. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) pushed back against the Congress-BJP 'plot to target' Ms. George. The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) said it would take to the streets to protect Ms. George. Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan said the CPI(M) could, if the push comes to the shove, organise boycotts against Opposition leaders.
