Canadian junior hockey phenom Gavin McKenna to announce NCAA destination
McKenna will make the announcement on ESPN's SportsCenter at 6 p.m. ET. NHL.com reported Penn State and Michigan State are both in the running to land the 17-year-old forward.
It will be a game-changing decision for junior hockey as the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in next year's NHL draft leaves the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat Tigers to join the United States college ranks.
McKenna had 41 goals and 88 assists in 56 regular-season games last season and helped Medicine Hat win its first WHL title since 2007 and reach the Memorial Cup final.
In June, the six-foot winger from Whitehorse became the third-youngest Canadian Hockey League player of the year, only Sidney Crosby and John Tavares were younger.

Soo Greyhounds aim to bring more ‘big-league' feel to GFL Memorial Gardens
Article content When the Soo Greyhounds return to the ice next month, fans might find themselves looking up. A brand-new remote-controlled blimp, emblazoned with the team's logo and colours, will glide over the GFL Memorial Gardens this season. Article content The new addition is one of several 'fresh new touches' coming to the arena as the team continues to focus on building its in-game experience, according to Maya Lortie, the Greyhounds' business operations associate. Article content Article content 'We are always looking for new and creative ways to make a more memorable and exciting in-game experience for our fans at every Greyhounds game,' she told The Sault Star. 'The blimp will add a fun and new element to our game day presentation, and we think it will bring in a sense of excitement for fans of all ages, which is why we decided to introduce it this season.' Article content Article content The Canadian-made blimp, produced in Brantford, Ont., will fly during intermissions as 'both an entertainment and promotional tool,' featuring local businesses and spotlighting the team's community partners. It joins the popular Agawa Canyon train horn — introduced last season as the Hounds' new goal horn — as part of a growing focus on creating a vibrant home-game atmosphere. Article content The push to make Greyhounds games feel like a 'big-league' event also comes at a time of rising speculation about whether the team will bid to host the 2027 Memorial Cup, something the franchise hasn't done since it won its only CHL championship in 1993. Article content The Hounds have been active bidders in recent years, and owner Tim Lukenda didn't rule out the possibility of future submissions when the club's 2024 bid lost to Saginaw. When it comes to hosting the CHL's marquee tournament, strengthening arena atmosphere and community engagement are critical. Article content Several NHL teams employ blimps in their game day presentations, and the Greyhounds won't be the first in the OHL; the London Knights and Oshawa Generals, two of the top three teams in league attendance, are among the clubs to have taken part. Across the sports landscape, in-game entertainment has evolved to include blimps, light shows, and more interactive fan activations as teams look to turn every Wednesday-night game into an event.

NFL on the verge of selling media assets to ESPN for an equity stake in the network, AP source says
The NFL and ESPN are expected to announce an agreement next week under which most of the league's significant media holdings will go to the sports network. People familiar with the transaction said the multibillion-dollar deal would give the NFL an equity stake in ESPN. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized. It was first reported by The Athletic. The NFL and ESPN had no comment. The NFL has been trying to sell its media properties for nearly five years. ESPN and the league have been involved in on-again, off-again talks for the past three years. The proposed move comes as ESPN is expected to soon launch its direct-to-consumer service, likely before the end of August. The service would give cord cutters access to all of ESPN's programs and networks for $29.99 per month. Most cable, satellite and viewers who have streaming services will receive the service for free as part of their subscription. ESPN would get access to the popular RedZone channel, as well as NFL Network and an additional seven regular-season games (six international and a Saturday afternoon late-season contest). 'The Rich Eisen Show' is not affiliated with NFL Network. ESPN has carried NFL games since 1987 and 'Monday Night Football' since 2006. Under the current TV contract, it will have the 2027 and 2031 Super Bowls for the first time. NFL Network started in November 2003 and was the second major pro league to have its own network. NBA TV started in 1999, MLB Network in 2009 and NHL Network in the United States in 2007. ___ AP NFL:

Create Account The NFL great-turned-broadcaster shared his feelings about the ouster, which was reported Wednesday by The Athletic , on the latest episode of his Nightcap podcast. Sharpe opened up the episode by revealing he knew that he officially was done at ESPN since earlier this week, but he was hoping the news wouldn't be made public until after this weekend for a very selfless reason. This weekend his brother, Sterling Sharpe, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Shannon didn't want to overshadow his achievement. Unfortunately for him, that did not happen. 'I found out this information a little earlier in the week and really the only thing that I really asked is, 'Guys, could we wait until Monday? My brother's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family,'' Sharpe said. 'I said, 'This coming out will overshadow everything he's worked his entire life for.' And, unfortunately, it didn't happen that way.' Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. Shannon Sharpe starts off his NightCap podcast tonight addressing being fired by ESPN🚨"I will not be returning to ESPN, I found out this information a little earlier in the week... I just wish this thing couldve waited until Monday" Shannon did not want the news to overshadow… — SOUND | Victor Baez (@itsavibe) July 31, 2025 Sharpe said he 'profusely' apologized to his brother about the situation. The 57-year-old Denver Broncos great was rocked by the bombshell $50-million civil lawsuit in April, in which it was alleged that he committed assault, sexual assault, sexual battery and battery. The unidentified plaintiff accused Sharpe of sexually assaulting her several times beginning in late 2024. Sharpe denied 'all allegations of coercion or misconduct' in a statement through his legal counsel, also sharing intimate details of the relationship and graphic messages sent to him from the accuser, according to his lawyer, Lanny J. Davis. WARNING: Explicit sexual details Among the messages in the statement, the woman — who was only identified as Jane Doe in the court filing — allegedly told Sharpe that she wanted him to 'put a dog collar around my neck' and 'tie me up and do bad things to me,' while also asking for money to come and visit him. 'The evidence paints a clear picture: this was a consensual, adult relationship that included role-playing, sexual language, and fantasy scenarios,' Davis said. Sharpe took leave from ESPN a few days after news of the lawsuit broke and initially said he would return at the start of the NFL pre-season, which began Thursday. Read More On the podcast, Sharpe said that he enjoyed his time at ESPN and understood the decision to part ways with him. 'I really enjoyed my time at ESPN , they gave me an opportunity to bring my audience that saw me really just grow,' Sharpe said on his podcast.
