Salesman charged with fraud over sale of gloves worth RM5.1mil
PETALING JAYA : A salesman pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur sessions court today to a charge of fraud involving the sale and purchase of gloves worth a total of RM5.1 million five years ago.
P Dinesh, 36, together with Aspen Broadway Sdn Bhd director R Gopinatan Pillai, allegedly deceived a person into believing 150,000 non-existent boxes of Coats Nitrile Examination gloves were already in stock at Hartalega Sdn Bhd's warehouse.
The victim transferred RM5.1 million into a bank account belonging to a law firm appointed by Aspen Broadway.
The offence was allegedly committed at a condominium in Jalan Tun Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, on Nov 9, 2020, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides up to 10 years' imprisonment, whipping and a fine if convicted.
Judge Azrul Darus allowed Dinesh bail of RM100,000 with one surety and also ordered him to surrender his passport to the court and to report to a nearby police station once a month.
Deputy public prosecutor Chow Siang Kong appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Akmal Taufik represented Dinesh.
The court set July 28 for mention.
On Feb 10, Gopinatan was charged with one count of fraud and seven counts of money laundering involving the sale and purchase of gloves.

SINGAPORE, July 12 — Singapore must take a firm stance against animal cruelty while educating the public on responsible pet ownership, the republic's Home Minister K Shanmugam reportedly said. Responding to a series of high-profile community cat deaths earlier this year, CNA reported Shanmugam reaffirming the government's zero-tolerance approach towards those who harm animals. 'We cannot tolerate cruelty ... We have to take a strong stand, and we cannot let perpetrators go free,' Shanmudam, who is also the Singapore coordinating minister for national security. He referenced a recent case where a man convicted of killing cats by throwing them from Housing Board blocks had his jail term doubled on appeal. However, Shanmugam cautioned against over-criminalisation, stressing the importance of targeted enforcement while ensuring that those who make mistakes without cruel intent are educated. 'What you want is to go after the people with malice – who go out to be cruel to animals, who think that it's a sport, who think that it's a game,' he said. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Singapore recorded 961 cases of animal cruelty and welfare concerns in 2024 — the highest in 12 years. Most cases involved cats. Under existing laws, first-time offenders face up to 18 months in jail, fines of up to S$15,000, or both. Repeat offenders may be jailed for up to three years and fined S$30,000. Legislation is being reviewed to further raise penalties and expand enforcement powers. Only 6 per cent of reported animal abuse cases were substantiated between 2019 and 2024, NParks said. Many lacked sufficient information for enforcement, although egregious offenders were prosecuted. Shanmugam also addressed the role of mental illness in abuse cases, stating that psychological conditions should not be used to excuse cruelty. 'If the person is a threat, that threat has to be removed, usually by removing that person from society,' he added. 'Unless the experts come out and say a certain type of treatment would help, and the person doesn't need to be incarcerated.'

Home Ministry warns public of fake TikTok accounts impersonating Saifuddin Nasution offering bogus financial aid
PUTRAJAYA, July 12 — The public has been advised to remain cautious and alert to the existence of fake TikTok accounts misusing the name and image of Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to deceive unsuspecting individuals. The Home Minister's Office said the fake accounts claim Saifuddin Nasution is offering financial aid through a WhatsApp link placed in the account's bio. 'This is, in fact, a scam aimed at deceiving the public into making advance payments,' it said in a statement today. The office has lodged reports with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and TikTok concerning the existence of the accounts. To date, three accounts have been blocked by TikTok, namely Saifuddin_Nasution0; Saifuddin_Nasution1 and Saifuddin_Nasution12. 'However, we do not rule out the possibility that more fake accounts will continue to be created. 'As such, we urge the public to always be cautious, not to be easily taken in, and to verify the authenticity of any information before taking action,' the statement added. The Home Minister's Office stressed that Saifuddin Nasution would never request any form of payment for assistance. 'We will also not hesitate to take legal action against any individuals involved in this scam,' it said. Suspected militancy probe: Dhaka seeks cooperation with Malaysia over arrests of Bangladeshis on terror charges
DHAKA, July 12 — Bangladeshi Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Friday expressed concerns over the arrests of Bangladeshi nationals in Malaysia recently on charges of terrorism, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) reported. He said the government of Bangladesh will work with Malaysia to investigate allegations of militancy against Bangladeshi nationals who were arrested by the Malaysian police.
