Chinese Studio Wants to Bring Back Bruce Lee With AI
The government-backed 'Kung Fu Movie Heritage Project 100 Classics AI Revitalization Project' will take all-time great kung fu flicks starring the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li and give them new (but almost certainly not better) life with the help of AI. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Zhang Pimin, chairman of the China Film Foundation, described the project as an attempt to give films a look that 'conforms to contemporary film viewing.'
It'd be one thing if this were simply a restoration project or a technique to upscale the resolution to something that feels more modern, but according to the Hollywood Reporter, it sounds like at least some of the effort will go into fully remaking the films with AI filters atop them. For instance, a trailer for the new AI-ed take on John Woo's 1986 film A Better Tomorrow was shown off at the festival and reportedly turns its lead Chow Yun-fat into a cyberpunk-looking character. The new take, titled A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Frontier, is being marketed as 'the world's first full-process, AI-produced animated feature film.' Yuck.
The studios invited AI animation companies to get involved in the 'revitalization' effort, which will apparently seek to 'reshape the visual aesthetics' of films while trying to 'pay tribute to the original work,' by putting up a fund of 100 million yuan (about $14 million) to help get the ball rolling.
Other films that will be involved in the project include Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury (1972), Jackie Chan's Drunken Master (1978) and Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China (1991)—all films that you can watch right now and will find to be every bit as magical and captivating as they were the day they first hit theaters. The stunt work still stands up, and the camera work still slaps. You can find all three of these, and plenty of other martial arts classics, on streaming. If you're a stickler for image quality, films like Fist of Fury have 4K re-releases available on Blu-ray. Just watch these movies. They don't need AI sloppification to be relevant.

For 'Rebirth,' top-earning territories so far include China with $41 million, the United Kingdom and Ireland with $16.6 million, Mexico with $13.9 million and Germany with $7.6 million. In second place on international box office charts, Apple's 'F1: The Movie' collected $56.3 million from 78 markets in its sophomore outing. The racing drama, starring Brad Pitt as a has-been Formula One driver, has collected $184 million overseas and $293 million worldwide to date. Those are strong ticket sales for an original, adult-skewing tentpole. But the $250 million-budgeted 'F1' will require many laps around the track to justify its massive price tag. In other box office news, Disney's 'Lilo & Stitch' is inching closer and closer to the billion-dollar milestone. So far the live-action remake has grossed $564.2 million internationally and $972.7 million globally after seven weekends of release. With those ticket sales, 'Lilo & Stitch' has officially overtaken 'A Minecraft Movie' ($954 million) as the year's highest-grossing Hollywood release. However, China's blockbuster 'Ne Zha 2' remains by far the biggest film of 2025 with $1.8 billion in the bank. Meanwhile, another family-friendly Disney property, Pixar's intergalactic adventure 'Elio,' continues to crater with $41.7 million overseas and $96.8 million worldwide after three weekends of release. This dismal turnout, despite decent reviews and audience scores, signals that original animation is facing dire straits at the box office.

Five Attorneys Discuss Law And Fine Dining In ‘Law And The City'
'Law In The City' is a legal drama starring Lee Jong-suk and Moon Ga-young. Being an attorney in real life is not as glamorous as it is in TV dramas. That's the advice lawyer Ahn Ju-Hyeong gives a new attorney in the k-drama Law In The City. He sees the hapless newcomer trying a dramatic court move that he must have seen on TV. It's overdramatic and pointless. Ju-hyeong should know how unexciting a day in court can be. Ju-hyeong (Lee Jong-suk) has been an associate attorney for almost a decade. What he's learned over the years is that clients can't be trusted. They lie a lot which makes it hard to defend them. He's beyond disillusioned. Still, he's a good worker, meticulous and dedicated. The brightest spot in his day is having lunch with other lawyers who work in the Seokjo-dong district of Seoul. There's talkative Chang-won, played by Kang You-seok; his kind but always late co-worker Moon-jung, plyed by Ryu Hye-young; and the group's capitalist cheerleader Sang-ki, played by Im Seong-jae. Sang-ki runs a restaurant blog called Lawyer's Table. Ju-hyeong's friends tease him about the succession of blind dates he goes on. They wonder why he bothers since he never likes any of the candidates. At least they have each other. These friends meet to eat but also to complain about what's wrong in their lives. Between mountains of cases, they don't really have time to make any significant changes. When another friend stops working in the neighborhood they welcome a new attorney into the fold, the bright and optimistic Kang Hee-ji, played by Moon Ga-young. Hopefully she will fit in. There's only one problem. Hee-ji and Ju-hyeong have met. Also, she's a lot less jaded than they are. Word of warning: don't watch this drama hungry. Since the lawyers meet to try the city's best restaurant, there are plenty of close-ups of their meals and everything looks delicious. Stock up with snacks before tuning in. Law In the City is Lee Jong-suk's first drama in three years. He starred in the 2022 prison drama Big Mouth and before that he appeared in Romance Is A Bonus Book in 2019. Moon Ga-young earned acclaim earlier this year for playing a former gamer in My Dearest Nemesis. Before that she appeared in The Interest of Love, Delightfully Deceitful and True Beauty. Kang You-seok can be seen in Resident Playbook and When Life Gives You Tangerines. Ryu appeared in Gangnam B-Side and can be seen this year in Nice Guy. Baeksang Award-winning actress Yum Hye-ran also plays an important role as Kim Hyung-min, a building owner. New International Character Posters For THE FANTASTIC FOUR
Marvel Studios is rolling out The Fantastic Four: First Steps with a slick new batch of international character posters. With the film dropping day-and-date in China and the U.S. on July 25, the campaign is revving up. The posters showcase Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), Ben Grimm (The Thing), and yes—H.E.R.B.I.E., the lovable robot that may very well become Disney's next merch juggernaut. Director Matt Shakman is aiming for something more personal and unified with this movie, placing the focus on the family at the core of the franchise. 'Casting was the number one challenge for the film. It wasn't just a search for who was the best Ben and who was the best Johnny, but also who was the best family? Who was the best married couple? Who were the best siblings and honorary uncle? So it's been very gratifying to see the incredible chemistry that the four of them have had since the beginning.' That chemistry will be tested by the cosmic threat of Galactus and the Silver Surfer, key characters at the heart of this new interpretation. But notably absent? Doctor Doom. 'Doom's a great character, but he takes up a lot of air,' Shakman explained. 'Other film adaptations have done both an origin story and Doom. We're doing neither, and that allows us to look at them from a fresh perspective.' Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing—as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus' plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren't bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal. The movie is rooted in the old-fashioned optimism that inspired the comic that birthed the modern Marvel Universe in 1961. The director previously said: 'More than just the visual aesthetics, the '60s to me are all about optimism. It's about looking to the stars and dreaming about traveling into space. It's about how with the right heart and the right mind, you can do anything — which is what the Fantastic Four is all about.'
