China-Singapore team's nanovaccine suppresses cancer recurrence and spread in animal tests
cancer vaccine that has produced promising results in animal tests – reducing the regrowth and spread of tumours up to seven times more effectively than existing treatments.
The
nanovaccine attacks not only regular cancerous cells but also cancer stem cells (CSCs), which can lie dormant within tumours during treatment, only awakening when conditions are more favourable to the disease.
The bioinspired approach developed by the researchers, led by Yang Yanlian from the National Centre for Nanoscience and Technology and Chen Xiaoyuan from the National University of Singapore, has potential for personalised cancer vaccines.
The researchers detailed their findings in a paper published last month by the peer-reviewed Nature Nanotechnology.
Post-surgical recurrence and metastasis of cancers are mainly driven by CSCs, which are highly resistant to conventional therapies. Some studies have even suggested that traditional treatments like radiotherapy
may inadvertently promote their spread.
The body's normal stem cells work continuously, whether generating blood or helping to renew the gut's lining every three to five days. But their unique self-renewal and unlimited proliferation qualities are also harboured by CSCs within tumours.

Chinese city orders real-name registration for chikungunya fever medication amid outbreak
The southern city of Foshan has required real-name registration for medication to treat chikungunya fever , while two cities in southeastern China have asked travellers returning from affected areas to monitor their health for signs of the mosquito-borne illness. The market supervision bureau in Foshan, Guangdong province issued a public notice on Sunday asking all retail pharmacies to start real-name registration and to keep records when selling medications to treat symptoms of chikungunya, including fever, rashes and joint pain. This practice was also used during the Covid-19 pandemic to help mainland Chinese authorities track potential cases that were not reported. Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. It cannot be contracted through direct contact with another person. While rarely fatal, the illness can lead to debilitating symptoms lasting weeks. Those who buy the medications are required to provide their personal information and tell pharmacies about any recent mosquito bites or chikungunya symptoms, according to the notice. Some health authorities in Foshan have handed out administrative penalties for businesses that fail to promptly eliminate mosquito breeding sites, such as hotels and restaurants, according to state-run news site on Tuesday.

Vietnam's swine fever infections triple in 2 weeks to over 100,000
Vietnam has been hit by an increasing number of outbreaks of African swine fever , with the number of infected pigs more than tripling in just two weeks, state media said on Tuesday. The country has detected 972 African swine fever outbreaks so far this year, up from 514 reported in mid-July, the Tien Phong newspaper reported. The number of pigs infected has risen to more than 100,000 from 30,000 over the same period, the paper said, citing Vietnam's agriculture ministry. The infected pigs have died or been culled. '[African swine fever] has broken out on a very large scale, spreading across the country, seriously affecting the livestock industry, especially the supply of pork,' Nguyen Xuan Duong, chairman of the Animal Husbandry Association of Vietnam, was quoted as saying.
