New committee to address financial irregularities, says Anwar

The Star04-06-2025
PETALING JAYA: The Special Committee Meeting of the National Tatakelola Cabinet (JKKTN) has agreed to establish a Serious Irregular Action Committee (JTKS) to handle audits related to financial irregularities, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He stated this initiative would coincide with strengthening the state audit department through amendments to the 1957 Audit Act.
"As I presided over the JKKTN on Tuesday (June 3), serious attention was given to audit findings related to irregularities that could affect the credibility of the country's fiscal management," said the Prime Minister on Facebook.
He said the JTKS aims to ensure more holistic, targeted, and high-impact follow-up actions, aligning with accountability, transparency, and integrity principles.
Last month, Auditor-General Wan Suraya Wan Radzi said the amended Audit Act, which came into force last year, empowers the department to audit 1,856 GLCs.
She noted that beyond recovering public funds, the audit process aims to determine whether serious irregularities occurred, including government lapses or systemic failures.

Anwar challenges opposition to legal no-confidence motion in Parliament

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reiterated that he welcomes criticism and calls for his resignation but stressed that any attempt to change the government must follow democratic processes. He challenged the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion in Parliament if they have the numbers to replace his MADANI Government. 'Some say Anwar must step down, to rally (to make me step down). The police gave me a report, and I said, Don't block the roads. But when they said they would force the government to change, that sounds odd. 'They said they don't want an election, and I said that's fine,' Anwar said during a monthly assembly with Prime Minister's Department staff. He questioned the opposition's ability to gather sufficient support, pointing out that his government holds a strong two-thirds majority in Parliament. Anwar warned against unconstitutional attempts to topple the government, stating that such actions violate legal and democratic principles. 'If there is a no-confidence motion, there must be enough votes. But they (opposition) know it can't be done. 'Insya Allah, we will hold on strongly, with a two-thirds majority, and we will wait for the election, but they want to oust (Anwar) now. This violates the principles of the Constitution and the law,' he said. Anwar also dismissed narratives portraying Malaysia as unstable, calling them deliberate attempts to create public anxiety. He reaffirmed his tolerance for dissent but warned of firm action if constitutional principles are challenged. - Bernama

Appreciation package for Malaysians to be announced soon says PM Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that a special appreciation package for the people will be announced either tomorrow or Wednesday. The announcement follows discussions during the Unity Government retreat in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, where public concerns were reviewed. Anwar stated that additional time was needed to finalise the details of the package, ensuring it effectively addresses pressing issues. 'The retreat focused on explaining government policies while also listening to public concerns, which led me to consider certain changes and announcements to help ease these issues,' he said during the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly. Earlier, on July 19 in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Anwar hinted that the package would include government measures to tackle the rising cost of living. He emphasised that careful review was necessary before making the official announcement. 'I mentioned that I would make an announcement within a day or two (whether in the form of additional measures or otherwise) but it requires some careful review,' he added. The upcoming package is expected to provide relief to Malaysians facing economic challenges, aligning with the government's commitment to addressing public welfare. - Bernama

World leaders confirm attendance at 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur

PUTRAJAYA: Several world leaders from Asia, Europe, Canada, the United States, Africa, and Latin America are expected to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed. Speaking at a meeting with the Prime Minister's Department staff, Anwar noted that leaders from Italy, the European Union, Canada, and the United States have already committed to attending. 'It will be a major international conference for Malaysia,' Anwar said. Earlier this month, he revealed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20, have confirmed their participation. Anwar emphasized that his recent overseas visits were part of Malaysia's responsibilities as ASEAN Chair, not leisure trips. 'I am among the Prime Ministers who have travelled abroad the most. Coincidentally, Malaysia is ASEAN Chairman this year,' he stated. He expressed confidence in Malaysia's civil service and security forces, citing their strong performance during the recent ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and ASEAN-China Summits. 'If you look at the performance of civil servants, police, Immigration Department, and airports at ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-China, I am confident in our ability to provide the best for our country,' he added. Malaysia's improved ranking in the IMD World Competitiveness Report—from 34th in 2024 to 23rd in 2025—further reinforces international confidence in the nation's administrative capabilities ahead of the summit. The 47th ASEAN Summit follows the successful 46th edition held in Kuala Lumpur in May, which included the second ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. Malaysia, as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, has adopted the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' for its leadership term. - Bernama
