James Van Der Beek was "as honest as possible" with his children about his cancer diagnosis because he didn't want to "confuse" them. The former Dawson's Creek star - who has Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, six, and Jeremiah, two, with wife Kimberly - was diagnosed with stage 3 colo-rectal cancer last year and didn't want to hide the news from his broos because "they know" when he's not doing well. Speaking on Today, he said: 'I'm far from an expert, but our approach was just to be as honest as possible, as honest to the degree of their understanding, right? Because they know. "They can sense that Dad's having a tough day. "They know if Dad's in pain. They know, and so by not telling them, I think you're confusing them even more." James has found "a lot of beauty" in his health struggles because of the way his kids have responded. He said: "I have kids making me tea. 'Dad, what do you need?' There's been a lot of beauty that's come out of it, but I would love to save everybody this journey, which is why I'm saying get screened." The 48-year-old actor advised other parents in a similar situation to share the news with their children as they will be surprised by the resilience of youngsters. He said: "When you tell them what you're doing, and you tell them the approach, they can see it and they can feel it, and I think it's also your journey is their journey." At the moment, James is "feeling great" but views battling the disease as a "full-time job". He said: "Today, I'm feeling great, yeah. It's been a journey. There are just so many ups and downs and so many unknowns. Cancer is – I call it a full-time job." James has made a number of changes to his life, including practicing yoga and trying the keto diet and has learned to slow down. He told Today.com: "[I've been finding] the beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job," he tells TODAY.com. And he is happy he has continued to work, with a role in upcoming TV series Elle. He said: "The greatest thing about work is a cancer doesn't exist between action and cut. "It was fun to drop in and just have a blast because it's such a great cast, a great production, and everybody out there is really talented."

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps," Disney's debut of the rebooted Marvel Comics franchise, continued to outperform the competition for a second straight weekend at the North American box office, industry estimates showed Sunday. Actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy-winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn star as the titular team of superheroes, who must save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus. The film pulled in an estimated $40 million in the Friday-through-Sunday period, a 66 percent drop from the prior weekend, for a two-week global total of $368 million. Universal's family-friendly animation sequel "The Bad Guys 2," about a squad of goofy animal criminals actually doing good in their rebranded lives, debuted in second spot, earning $22.2 million. "This is a good opening for an animation follow-up sequel," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. The film edged out Paramount's reboot of "Naked Gun," a slapstick comedy starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr, son of the bumbling police lieutenant from the original 1980s movie and related television series "Police Squad!" It pulled in $17 million in its opening weekend. "Superman," the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, slipped from second to fourth at $13.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said. That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, at $551 million. "Jurassic World: Rebirth" -- the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga -- finished in fifth place with $8.7 million. In terms of newcomers, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's heist comedy 'The Bad Guys 2' landed with $16.3 million from 58 territories. Those ticket sales are slightly ahead of 2022's 'The Bad Guys' in terms of like-for-like markets. Domestically, the sequel debuted to $22.8 million for a global start of $44.5 million. ‘Starfinder: Afterlight' Brings Paizo's TTRPG to Video Games

Tabletop RPG developer Paizo is taking is first steps into video games through its sci-fi title, Starfinder. Developer Epictellers Entertainment is adapting the Pathfinder offshoot for mouse and keyboard with the single-player RPG Afterlight. In it, players will assemble of crew with their own personal stories and baggage for you to help deal with while embarking on a quest to save the galaxy. Like the recently announced RPG for The Expanse, players can play as different classes and make choices across a branching narrative. But unlike that game—which, like BioWare's Mass Effect, is a third-person shooter with some tactical elements—Afterlight's turn-based combat takes after Starfinder's just-launched second edition. Starfinder: Afterlight will have a Kickstarter campaign launching in the near future. Epictellers also revealed the game's voice cast will be directed by Neil Newbon, the voice of Astarion in 2023's Baldur's Gate 3. That game went on to be a big revenue driver for Dungeons & Dragons the last few years, and it's easy to imagine Afterlight doing the same for Starfinder when it launches for Steam Early Access in 2026.
