India hires Khalid Jamil as new head coach after Xavi and Pep Guardiola hoax applications
The AIFF admitted last week that proposed candidacies received from former Barcelona coach Xavi and Manchester City manager Guardiola, which had been disclosed to domestic media two days earlier, were not genuine.
Instead, Jamil, one of more than 170 real applicants to coach India, is the first domestic coach to take the position for 13 years and succeeds Manolo Marquez after the Spaniard departed in July after 11 months and just one win.
Jamil has won India's top league prize as a player, in 2005, and also as head coach of Aizawl FC in 2017. The 49-year-old took over Indian Super League club Jamshedpur in 2023, taking it to the final of the 2025 Super Cup.
The AIFF said in a statement that committee members Shabbir Ali and Armando Colaco had pushed for a local candidate from a three-man shortlist -- that also contained Stephen Constantine, the British coach with two previous spells in charge of India, as well as Slovenia's Stefan Tarkovic -- in a bid to give Indian coaching a boost.
Jamil's major task is to recover from a poor start in qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup, which saw India, ranked No. 133 in the world, collect just one point from the opening two games in its quest to make a third successive appearance at the quadrennial tournament. Only the winner of the four-team group will advance to Saudi Arabia. Qualification resumes in October.

Wirtz unfazed by huge Liverpool price tag
Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag "doesn't matter" as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100 million ($132 million) that could rise to £116 million with add-ons, making his move a potential British record. However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday, the 22-year-old brushed off the size of his transfer fee. "I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter," he said. "Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball. "I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations." Liverpool face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the season-opening Community Shield on Sunday and kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on August 15. Germany international Wirtz said he was relishing the challenge. Killie must 'dust themselves down' and prepare for Hibs
The new season got under way on Saturday and the old blood pressure was soaring again as Killie threw away a two goal lead and had to settle for a point. The outcome rested on one key decision when Matthew MacDermid decided to ignore the foul on George Stanger then award a penalty and a red card. It seems every time we get this official that a Killie player takes an early bath, it would be fair to say that I don't feel he is up to the job. The first half was fairly even until Killie burst into life with two goals in quick succession that should have been enough to win the game. We just need to dust ourselves down and get ready for Hibs away on Sunday afternoon. Traditionally it is not a happy hunting ground however the hosts have to contend with their European demands and I'm hoping that takes the edge off their league performances. Liam Polworth and David Watson played well in the heart of midfield and with Daniels getting another goal there are plenty of positives in the squad.
