India hires Khalid Jamil as new head coach after Xavi and Pep Guardiola hoax applications

Yahoo4 days ago
NEW DELHI (AP) — After discarding hoax applications from Xavi and Pep Guardiola, the All India Football Federation hired Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the national team on Friday.
The AIFF admitted last week that proposed candidacies received from former Barcelona coach Xavi and Manchester City manager Guardiola, which had been disclosed to domestic media two days earlier, were not genuine.
Instead, Jamil, one of more than 170 real applicants to coach India, is the first domestic coach to take the position for 13 years and succeeds Manolo Marquez after the Spaniard departed in July after 11 months and just one win.
Jamil has won India's top league prize as a player, in 2005, and also as head coach of Aizawl FC in 2017. The 49-year-old took over Indian Super League club Jamshedpur in 2023, taking it to the final of the 2025 Super Cup.
The AIFF said in a statement that committee members Shabbir Ali and Armando Colaco had pushed for a local candidate from a three-man shortlist -- that also contained Stephen Constantine, the British coach with two previous spells in charge of India, as well as Slovenia's Stefan Tarkovic -- in a bid to give Indian coaching a boost.
Jamil's major task is to recover from a poor start in qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup, which saw India, ranked No. 133 in the world, collect just one point from the opening two games in its quest to make a third successive appearance at the quadrennial tournament. Only the winner of the four-team group will advance to Saudi Arabia. Qualification resumes in October.

Sky: Milan finally have Jashari agreement with Club Brugge

Sky Sport Italia is reporting that Milan finally have an agreement in place with Club Brugge over a deal for Switzerland international Ardon Jashari after weeks of negotiations. Reports Milan have agreement in principle for Jashari Tuesday's report claims that there is an agreement in principle in place over a €34m deal with an additional €3m in bonuses, although outlets elsewhere have quoted slightly different fees. BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – MAY 04: Ardon Jashari #30 of Club Brugge KV lifts the Croky Cup trophy after Club Brugge KV defeated RSC Anderlecht 2-1 in the Croky Cup Final at King Baudouin Stadium on May 04, 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. (Photo by Alex Bierens) Reports on Monday evening claimed that the deal would be closed for a slightly higher total for a fee of €33.5m plus up to €4.5m in bonuses, some of which were easily achievable and others less certain. Sky claims that Milan are now closing the deal and discussing the final details with Club Brugge for a deal that will total €37m. The Rossoneri are expecting to have everything wrapped up within the next few hours. If his signing is confirmed, Jashari could become Milan's fifth new addition of the summer transfer window, following the previous arrivals of Luka Modric, Samuele Ricci, Pervis Estupinan and Pietro Terracciano. The Rossoneri are also hoping to close a deal with Young Boys for right-back Zachary Athekame at a reported cost of around €10m, while Dusan Vlahovic is also still of interest to compete with Santiago Gimenez up front.

Wirtz unfazed by huge Liverpool price tag

Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag "doesn't matter" as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100 million ($132 million) that could rise to £116 million with add-ons, making his move a potential British record. However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday, the 22-year-old brushed off the size of his transfer fee. "I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter," he said. "Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball. "I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations." Liverpool face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the season-opening Community Shield on Sunday and kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on August 15. Germany international Wirtz said he was relishing the challenge. "There are some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better so I am really looking forward to it," he said. "It's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me." - Big spenders - Liverpool have spent more than £250 million so far in the summer transfer window on a clutch of new players including Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, who also came from Leverkusen, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. The club are understood to have made a bid of around £110 million plus potential add-ons for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak last week, which was rejected. Manager Arne Slot said after two friendlies against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday that there was "always room for improvement" despite the club's march to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. "We've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons," said the Dutchman. "So, Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third. We've lost with Trent (Alexander-Arnold, who has signed for Real Madrid) a lot of creativity from the back. "Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special -– I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position." Liverpool paid tribute to late forward Diogo Jota in their first matches at Anfield since the forward and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain last month. Slot said in his programme notes that it had been a "tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo's family, his wife, his children and friends". "We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward," he wrote. "We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go." jw/pi

Killie must 'dust themselves down' and prepare for Hibs

The new season got under way on Saturday and the old blood pressure was soaring again as Killie threw away a two goal lead and had to settle for a point. The outcome rested on one key decision when Matthew MacDermid decided to ignore the foul on George Stanger then award a penalty and a red card. It seems every time we get this official that a Killie player takes an early bath, it would be fair to say that I don't feel he is up to the job. The first half was fairly even until Killie burst into life with two goals in quick succession that should have been enough to win the game. We just need to dust ourselves down and get ready for Hibs away on Sunday afternoon. Traditionally it is not a happy hunting ground however the hosts have to contend with their European demands and I'm hoping that takes the edge off their league performances. Liam Polworth and David Watson played well in the heart of midfield and with Daniels getting another goal there are plenty of positives in the squad. It won't be easy however I predict a rare Killie win with Djenairo Daniels continuing his goalscoring exploits. Sandy Armour is editor of The Killie Hippo fanzine
