Tang Jie-Ee Wei off to flying start in Changzhou
The world No. 4 overcame a late scare in the opening game before pulling away for a 22–20, 21–12 win in 35 minutes at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou.
It was Tang Jie-Ee Wei's second win over the world No. 29 Americans, having also defeated them in straight games at the Singapore Open in May.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei , semi-finalists at the Indonesia Open and Japan Open in recent weeks, are hoping to sustain their fine form as they look to better their China Open result from last year, where they exited in the last 16.
The Malaysians had enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in their 2023 debut, reaching the semi-finals of the Super 1000 tournament.
They will take on either compatriots Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin or China's Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying, with fans certainly hopeful for an all-Malaysian clash that would guarantee a pair in the quarter-finals.

"I was practicing well and I don't think I transferred it today, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way," Gauff said. Venus Williams gets US Open mixed doubles wild card spot
NEW YORK, July 30 — Venus Williams, who made a comeback last week after more than a year's hiatus from competitive tennis, will compete alongside Reilly Opelka in mixed doubles at the US Open. Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion who turned 45 last month, and US compatriot Opelka were among 14 teams named on Tuesday to the revamped August 19-20 event by the US Tennis Association. Williams won her opening singles and doubles match at the DC Open last week in her first WTA tournament since last year's Miami Open. She is also set to play as a wild card in next month's Cincinnati Open and could ask for a US Open singles wild card. Those are expected to be announced in about two weeks. The US Open winning mixed doubles team will receive US$1 million (RM4.2 million). Eight teams received direct entry into the field by combined singles rankings, including top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy — the reigning US Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open singles champion — with American Emma Navarro. Japanese qualifier Ito stuns Paolini in Montreal upset
JAPANESE qualifier Aoi Ito stunned Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) on Tuesday to reach the third round of the WTA Canadian Open. The 21-year-old beat American Katie Volynets in the first round for her first WTA 1000 level triumph then followed with her first victory over a top-10 opponent by rallying from a set and break down to advance after two hours and 27 minutes. World number 105 Ito saved a match point in the 10th game of the second set and outlasted sixth-ranked Paolini to book a third-round match against Spain's 51st-ranked Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4.
