A two-tiered system: Trump calls for Tina Peters to be freed from prison
In early March, Donald Trump's Justice Department raised eyebrows with an unexpected move: The DOJ's civil division unexpectedly filed a brief in federal court, raising 'concerns' about the criminal conviction of a former Colorado clerk named Tina Peters.
The effort didn't amount to much, but as NBC News reported, the president's interest in the case has apparently intensified.
In a Truth Social post tonight, Trump called for former Colorado county clerk Tina Peters to be released from prison and said he was directing the Justice Department to take 'all necessary action' to help secure her release.
In a bizarre online harangue, Trump rewrote recent history, claiming that Peters simply 'worked to expose and document Democrat [sic] Election Fraud.' He added, 'Tina is an innocent Political Prisoner being horribly and unjustly punished in the form of Cruel and Unusual Punishment. This is a Communist persecution by the Radical Left Democrats to cover up their Election crimes and misdeeds in 2020.'
In case that weren't quite enough, the president concluded, 'I am hereby directing the Department of Justice to take all necessary action to help secure the release of this 'hostage' being held in a Colorado prison by the Democrats, for political reasons. FREE TINA PETERS, NOW!'
At this point, some readers might be thinking, 'Her name sounds familiar, but I'm not quite sure who Tina Peters is.' So let's take a stroll down memory lane.
Peters was a county clerk in Colorado who eagerly embraced Trump's lies and conspiracy theories about his 2020 election defeat, but that's not all she did. Peters also acted on those lies and conspiracy theories, using someone's security badge to allow a Mike Lindell associate to access county election equipment.
The apparent point of the endeavor was to leak election machinery data in pursuit of a conspiratorial plot that never existed in reality.
Not surprisingly, Peters was caught and indicted. She pleaded not guilty, but after she and her attorney struggled to present a compelling defense, a Colorado jury convicted Peters, finding her guilty of three counts of attempting to influence a public servant, one count of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty and failing to comply with the secretary of state.
Ahead of sentencing, Peters showed no remorse. A judge ultimately sentenced her to nine years behind bars.
This was a state official, charged with state crimes, by state prosecutors, in a state court, with a state jury, overseen by a state judge, which necessarily means neither the president nor his Justice Department can overturn Peters' criminal conviction.
But Trump apparently finds that unsatisfying; he wants to free his conspiratorial ally anyway; and he's willing to make up a series of ridiculous claims about her felonies as part of a public defense, up to and including accusing local prosecutors of overseeing 'a Communist persecution.'
Time will tell what, if anything, the Justice Department can do about Peters' incarceration.
For all of the hysterical and baseless Republican conspiracy theories during Joe Biden's presidency about 'weaponized' prosecutions and a 'two-tiered' justice system, Trump and his team are creating the very conditions the GOP condemned. The incumbent president — through his scandalous pardons, his intervention in cases such as Peters' and his willingness to sic prosecutors on his perceived political enemies — is going out of his way to make clear that his allies will be held to different legal standards than everyone else.
The brazenness is so plainly ridiculous, the Republican administration is hardly even trying to keep up appearances — and there's every reason to believe this will get worse in the coming days, weeks, months and years.

Trump global aid cuts risk 14 million deaths in five years, report says
Donald Trump's move to cut most of the US funding towards foreign humanitarian aid could cause more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, according to research published in The Lancet medical journal on Monday. A third of those at risk of premature deaths are children, the research finds. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in March that President Trump's administration had cancelled over 80% of all programmes at the US Agency for International Development, or USAID. "For many low- and middle-income countries, the resulting shock would be comparable in scale to a global pandemic or a major armed conflict," Davide Rasella, who co-authored the Lancet report, said in a statement. The funding cuts "risk abruptly halting - and even reversing - two decades of progress in health among vulnerable populations," added Rasella, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. The report comes as dozens of world leaders are meeting in the Spanish city of Seville this week for a United Nations-led aid conference, the biggest one in a decade. Looking back over data from 133 nations, the team of researchers estimated that USAID funding had prevented 91 million deaths in developing countries between 2001 and 2021. They also used modelling to project how funding being slashed by 83% – the figure announced by the US government earlier this year – could affect death rates. The cuts could lead to more than 14 million avoidable deaths by 2030, the projections found. That number included over 4.5 million children under the age of five – or around 700,000 child deaths a year. The Trump administration, previously led by billionaire Elon Musk's cost-cutting initiative, aimed to shrink the federal workforce. It has also accused USAID of supporting liberal projects. The US, by far the world's largest humanitarian aid provider, has operated in more than 60 countries, largely through contractors. According to Rubio, there were still approximately 1,000 remaining programmes that would be administered "more effectively" under the US State Department and in consultation with Congress. Still, the situation on the ground has not been improving, according to UN workers. Last month, a UN official told the BBC that hundreds of thousands of people were "slowly starving" in Kenyan refugee camps after US funding cuts reduced food rations to their lowest ever levels. At a hospital in Kakuma, in northwestern Kenya, the BBC witnessed a baby who could barely move and was showing signs of malnutrition, including having parts of her skin wrinkled and peeling.

California more than doubles illegal fireworks seizures so far this year, issues July 4 warning
What you need to know about California's July 4th illegal fireworks crackdown What you need to know about California's July 4th illegal fireworks crackdown What you need to know about California's July 4th illegal fireworks crackdown Hot and dry weather across California is fueling a Fourth of July warning from both the Governor's Office and state fire officials: illegal fireworks will not be tolerated. Gov. Gavin Newsom's office announced on Monday that so far in 2025, a statewide illegal fireworks crackdown has been working. Over 600,000 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives have already been seized. That's more than double the amount taken off the streets in all of 2024. "We've seen an uptick in recent years of illegal fireworks seized," said Kara Garrett, a Cal Fire spokesperson. Cal Fire says Californians need to remember there is a zero-tolerance policy for illegal fireworks use, which could result in a $50,000 fine and jail time. "The sale, transport, or use of fireworks without the Office of the State Fire Marshal safe and sane seal is illegal. As is possessing or using fireworks in any communities where they are not allowed," Garrett said. Some California communities ban all fireworks, meaning even safe and sane fireworks are not allowed. Before lighting off anything in celebration of the Independence Day holiday, it's important to check the rules exactly where you live. Since January 2024, Cal Fire says fireworks have sparked 1,230 fires and caused over $35 million in damage statewide. "Let me be clear. Fire conditions are elevated. The recent surge in wildland fires is proof of that. The Fourth of July holiday, coupled with fireworks, will significantly heighten that danger of new wildfire," Garrett said. This week, the sale of safe and sane fireworks at stands across the region is expected to ramp up. TNT stands allow nonprofits to sell the products and help raise money for their organizations from part of the proceeds. In West Sacramento's Walmart parking lot, the Knights of Columbus were hard at work selling products on Monday afternoon. "You can buy a few of these here and light 'em off all at once, have a little grand finale," said John Archuleta with the group, showing CBS13 the "larger" legal fireworks they sell. The free gift with each purchase is Cal Fire's take-home message, a safety write-up on a card given to each customer. A QR code on the card shows people how to safely use and dispose of safe and sane fireworks. "It's the first thing we do is put this into the bag. Because it's safety first," Archuleta said. From wildfire, to loss of homes, property or even life -- Cal Fire says leave your firework celebrations to the professionals and avoid steep fines for breaking the law by lighting off what's illegal.

Trump warns of 'whopping 68% tax increase' if Senate fails to pass historic bill
As the Senate continued to inch closer to finalizing President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," the president took to social media early Tuesday to warn that a failure to come to an agreement would end in the largest tax increase in history. The message came after lawmakers had been in a marathon "vote-a-rama," for several hours, submitting amendments to the megabill from either side of the aisle. "Republicans, the One Big Beautiful Bill, perhaps the greatest and most important of its kind in history, gives the largest Tax Cuts and Border Security ever, Jobs by the Millions, Military/Vets increases, and so much more. The failure to pass means a whopping 68% Tax increase, the largest in history!!!," he posted. There is currently no end in sight as Republican leaders are searching for ways to garner support for the bill while simultaneously fighting proposed amendments from Democrats who are opposing it. GOP leaders have a narrow margin and cannot afford to lose more than three Republican senators as two, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has already indicated that they oppose it. Tillis announced that he would not be seeking reelection after President Trump made threats of a campaign against him. Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota said Republicans are "figuring out how to get to the end game," but an end to the vote-a-rama has been predicted to come well into the middle of the night. The bill, if passed, will enact Trump's domestic tax and spending agenda that includes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, according to the latest CBO analysis. The package would also roll back billions in green energy tax credits threatening wind and solar investments, according to Democrats. Billionaire Elon Musk, who until a few weeks ago led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), took to social media late Monday, lashing out at Republicans as "the PORKY PIG PARTY!!" for including a provision, he argued, would raise the nation's debt limit by $5 trillion. Trump fired back at Musk on Truth Social, threatening to turn DOGE on its former leader. "Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one. Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!" the president wrote. The bill will also impose $1.2 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and food stamps and make sign-up eligibility more rigorous and change federal reimbursements to states. It will also provide a $350 billion infusion for border and national security to include deportations.
