Scott Township commissioner says e-bike riders are "flying" through parks
Scott Park in Scott Township is a fun place to enjoy a nice day, but according to Scott Township Commissioner Eileen Meyers, a few e-bike riders have created some close calls.
"They're just flying through the parks," Meyers said.
As prices have dropped, e-bikes are on the road in growing numbers, along with the speeds they're capable of, with some units exceeding 25 mph.
"Actually, in our park, the speed limit is 15 miles per hour. These kids can go faster than the speed limit," Meyers said.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the number of e-bike-related fatalities from 2020 to 2021 went up 77%. And from 2021 to 2022, e-bike fatalities went up an additional 31%.
"No hesitation, no stopping, and no helmet," Meyers said.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says use of bike helmets has dropped recently.
"It scares me that something is going to happen to one of these kids," Meyers said.
According to state law, e-bikes capable of going over 20 mph are not to be operated by anyone under the age of 16. Offenders could be fined or have their bikes confiscated.
For Meyers, this hits home. Not long ago, she witnessed a young boy on a regular bike get struck by a car at the intersection of Magazine and Bluff Street in Scott.
"I was the first one here on scene with him, and it was awful, it's something you just don't forget," she said.
Meyers says she wants parents of e-bike operators to have a talk with their kids — a talk that might just save lives.
"You gotta talk to your children about safety," Meyers said.

Fleeing man shot by Orange County deputies was holding gun, Sheriff Mina says
A man who fleeing Orange County sheriff's deputies while holding a gun early Saturday was shot and hospitalized in critical condition, according to Sheriff John Mina. At a press conference, Mina said the deputies were helping with a traffic stop near the intersection of Orlando Central Parkway and President's Drive around 1 a.m. when the man fled on foot. 'As our deputies ran after the man, they saw that he was holding a gun in his hand,' Mina said. 'The deputies caught up to the man who was still holding the gun, and our deputies discharged their service weapons striking the man.' The deputies gave the man first aid and he was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Mina said he had reviewed body-worn camera footage of the incident, and it will be released within 30 days. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation of the shooting. Meanwhile, the deputies involved have been placed on paid, administrative leave while FDLE reviews the case.

2 people shot at post-July 4 disturbance in City of Elmira: Police
Two people were shot in the City of Elmira during a large public disturbance in the early morning hours July 5, the Elmira Police Department said. Officers arrived in the area of Broadway Avenue and Mount Zoar Street shortly after 1 a.m. following a report of a large disturbance, with a crowd of over 100 people reportedly gathered in the streets. Officers were told a firearm was involved in the disturbance, and police found a group of people in the intersection tending to a man in the road, suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Other officers arriving at the scene observed a black truck leave the area at a high rate of speed, police said. Elmira officers followed the vehicle to the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where they discovered that the male driver had also suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh. According to the initial investigation, the man found on the ground at the scene was the intended target of the shooting, and the other man was a bystander struck by a stray bullet, police said. Both men are currently being treated at the hospital. 1 dead, 2 injured in Jamaica, Queens stabbing
One man is dead and two others were hurt after multiple were stabbed in Queens. It happened just before 2 a.m. on 112th Street and Sutphin Avenue in Jamaica, police said. A 25-year-old man who was stabbed in the chest died at the hospital. A 24-year-old man was slashed in the abdomen, and another was stabbed in the ribs. They are both in stable condition. There's been no description of a suspect released, and the circumstances leading up to the stabbing were also not clear.
