Bitcoin soars to new all-time high as US lawmakers focus on pro-crypto legislation

Bitcoin continued its rapid climb and hit another all-time high Monday as U.S. lawmakers begin a week focused on passing pro-crypto legislation.
Data from CoinMarketCap showed bitcoin climbed above $123,000 early Monday, up from about $108,000 only a week ago. The world's oldest and most popular cryptocurrency is currently the fifth most valuable asset class in the world at $2.4 trillion, giving it a higher market cap than Amazon.
The enthusiasm for bitcoin comes as the U.S. House is set to take up several pieces of cryptocurrency-related legislation in what's been dubbed 'crypto week' in Congress. Lawmakers have been under pressure from President Donald Trump and the big-spending crypto lobby to pass legislation quickly.
That includes a bill passed last month by the Senate that would regulate a type of cryptocurrency known as stablecoins. The House is also set to take up a cryptocurrency market structure legislation that is far more sweeping.
Trump, once a skeptic of the industry, has vowed in his second term to make the U.S. the global capital of crypto. Meanwhile, he and his family have moved aggressively into nearly every corner of the industry: mining operations, billion-dollar bitcoin purchases, a newly minted stablecoin and a Trump-branded meme coin.
The crypto industry has rapidly become a major player in Washington after feeling unfairly targeted by the Biden administration. The industry spent huge amounts on last year's elections and has been spending heavily on lobbying and other influence efforts this year.
Bitcoin has seen a significant rebound since April, when it briefly dipped below $75,000.
Spot bitcoin ETFs are becoming increasingly popular since launching last year and several publicly traded companies have made using debt and stock sales to buy bitcoin their primary business strategy.
Monday Mornings
The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week.
Created in response to the 2008 financial crisis, bitcoin has taken a highly volatile path to mainstream acceptance. Its backers say the asset is like a 'digital gold' that can act as a hedge against central bank and government malfeasance. Only 21 million bitcoins will ever be created.
'Bitcoin's price is finally catching up to what's been building under the surface,' said Adam Back, CEO of the crypto company Blockstream. 'This is institutional demand aligning with bitcoin's fundamentals, and a fixed supply doing what it was designed to do.'

Trump and U.S. senator team up to promote energy and tech investments in Pennsylvania

From left, David McCormick, then the Republican Pennsylvania Senate candidate, greets Donald Trump at a rally in Harrisburg, Pa., on July 31, 2024. (Matt Rourke / AP Photo) PITTSBURGH — U.S. President Donald Trump and Sen. David McCormick of Pennsylvania touted tens of billions of dollars of energy and technology investments Tuesday as the president travelled to Pittsburgh for a conference with dozens of top executives to promote his energy and technology agenda. The Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit, held at Carnegie Mellon University, comes as the state's political and business leaders are working to forge the city into a hub for robotics, artificial intelligence and energy. Trump has repeatedly pledged U.S. 'energy dominance' in the global market, and Pennsylvania — a swing state critical to his wins in 2016 and 2024 — is at the forefront of that agenda, in large part due to its coal and gas industry that the Republican administration has taken steps to bolster. At the summit, Trump Cabinet officials spoke of the need to produce as much energy as possible — especially from coal and natural gas — to beat China in the artificial intelligence race for the sake of economic and national security. 'The AI revolution is upon us,' Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said during a panel discussion. 'The Trump administration will not let us lose. We need to do clean, beautiful coal. We need to do natural gas, we need to embrace nuclear, we need to embrace it all because we have the power to do it and if we don't do it we're fools.' Some of the investments on a list released by McCormick's office were not necessarily brand new, while others were. Some involve massive data center projects, while others involve building power plants, expanding natural gas pipelines, upgrading power plants or improving electricity transmission networks. Google said it would invest US$25 billion on AI and data centre infrastructure over the next two years in PJM's mid-Atlantic electricity grid, while investment firm Brookfield said it had signed contracts to provide more than $3 billion of power to Google's data centers from two hydroelectric dams on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Blackstone said it will spend $25 billion on data centers and power infrastructure in northeastern Pennsylvania, Frontier Group said it would transform the former Bruce Mansfield coal-fired power plant in western Pennsylvania into a new natural gas-fired plant and AI cloud computing firm CoreWeave said it will spend more than $6 billion to equip a data center in southcentral Pennsylvania. McCormick, a first-term Republican senator who organized the inaugural event, said the summit was meant to bring together top energy companies and AI leaders, global investors and labor behind Trump's energy policies and priorities. The list of participating CEOs includes leaders from global behemoths like Blackstone, Bridgewater, SoftBank, Amazon Web Services, BlackRock and ExxonMobil and local companies such as the Pittsburgh-based Gecko Robotics, which deploys AI to bolster energy capacity. Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, also spoke. Administration officials speaking at the summit included White House crypto czar David Sacks, Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Lutnick. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also attended. McCormick credited his wife, Dina Powell McCormick, with the idea for a summit. Powell McCormick served as Trump's deputy national security adviser in his first term and is a former Goldman Sachs executive who is now at BDT & MSD Partners, a merchant bank. Pittsburgh is home to Carnegie Mellon University, a prestigious engineering school, plus a growing industry of small robotics firms and a so-called ' AI Avenue ' that's home to offices for Google and other AI firms. It also sits in the middle of the prolific Marcellus Shale natural gas reservoir. 'What's going on is a rewiring of the economy, of the world over the next 15 years and that takes trillions and trillions and tens of trillions of dollars and it starts with power,' said Bruce Flatt, CEO of Brookfield, during a panel discussion. Pennsylvania has scored big investment wins in recent months, some driven by federal manufacturing policy and others by the ravenous need for electricity from the fast-growing AI business. Nippon Steel just bought U.S. Steel for almost $15 billion, getting Trump's approval after pledging to invest billions alone in U.S. Steel's Pittsburgh-area plants. Amazon will spend $20 billion on two data centre complexes in Pennsylvania, while the one-time Homer City coal-fired power plant is being turned into the nation's largest gas-fired power plant to fuel a data centre campus. Meanwhile, Microsoft says it is spending $1.6 billion to reopen the lone functional nuclear reactor on Three Mile Island under a long-term power supply agreement for its data centres. ___ Levy reported from Harrisburg, Pa. Markets Hit Record Highs, Banks Report Q2 Results: Stocks to Watch

Stocks crept higher to kick off an eventful week, with the Nasdaq notching a record closing high ahead of the official start of the second-quarter earnings season. Over the weekend, President Trump upped the ante in regards to his tariff agenda, promising 30% duties on Mexico and the European Union. Officials from both countries are pushing to make a deal before the August 1 st deadline. Adding to the headlines yesterday, Trump ramped up tensions with Russia over the war in Ukraine, threatening to impose 'secondary' tariffs of up to 100% if a deal is not struck soon. Markets seemed to shrug off the latest tariff flareups, looking past any uncertainty as the Q2 earnings season gets underway. Almost 100 companies are on deck to report results this week, including 38 S&P 500 members. Several big banks reported this morning before the open, with the majority of the pack outpacing estimates. A mainly in-line CPI inflation report added to the bullish sentiment. It'll be interesting to see how stocks react to earnings. Looking at the second quarter as a whole, S&P 500 companies are expected to witness 4.7% earnings growth on 4% higher revenues. These figures represent a significant deceleration from the growth trend of recent quarters. Recapping the First Half of the Year It's an exciting time in the stock market right now with the major U.S. indexes eclipsing their former all-time highs. As we make our way deeper into the third quarter, let's take a step back and try to determine what may lie ahead for the rest of 2025 and beyond. It was certainly a first half to remember. The see-saw action translated to one of the most volatile first halves in recent memory. President Trump's trade war sent shockwaves throughout the financial markets, resulting in a nasty correction earlier in the year as investors priced in potential trade outcomes. By April, market performance began to turn the corner, improving rapidly as investors gained more clarity amid signs of trade-talk progress. The V-shaped, relentless move morphed into a lockout rally that left nonbelievers in the dust. And because many investors missed out on big gains, they will continue to snap up shares on weakness, which should help lift stocks even further. The S&P 500 just delivered one of the greatest three-month rallies in history, advancing more than 25% off the April lows. As we can see below, the current version of the blue-chip index has only accomplished this feat five other times since its inception in 1957: In the twelve months following each of these instances, the S&P 500 delivered double-digit gains each time. As the saying goes, strength begets strength. Still, the doubters and naysayers remain prevalent. This is certainly one of the most hated market rallies since the surge in stocks following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are always reasons that critics can point to as to why stocks can't continue higher, but as we know, stocks climb a wall of worry. Stocks to Watch Megabank JPMorgan Chase JPM led a slew of banks reporting quarterly earnings Tuesday morning. The banking giant reported Q2 earnings of $4.96 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.51/share by 9.98%. The bottom line improved 12.7% versus the year-ago period. Revenues for the second quarter of $44.91 billion also topped estimates. JPM stock, a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), ticked down slightly but remains in a strong uptrend and near 52-week highs: Outside of financials, leading chipmaker Nvidia NVDA saw its stock pop about 4% in the early going after the company stated it is filing applications with the U.S. government to resume sales of its previously restricted H20 GPUs to China. 'The U.S. government has assured Nvidia that licenses will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon,' the company said in a prepared statement. Nvidia will be one of the last companies to report quarterly results this season in late August. The stock has broken out to all-time highs and is resuming its former momentum: Bottom Line Positive earnings results out of the gate bode well for the remainder of the season. A tame inflation trend in the face of President Trump's tariffs adds to the bullish case. Historical statistics also point to more general market strength over the next twelve months. Make sure you're taking advantage of all that we offer here at Zacks. Disclosure: JPM is a long-term holding in the Zacks Income Investor portfolio. NVDA is a core holding in the Zacks Headline Trader portfolio. 7 Best Stocks for the Next 30 Days Just released: Experts distill 7 elite stocks from the current list of 220 Zacks Rank #1 Strong Buys.
