DJ Sphectacula gets real about fatherhood, beats and beach days
This Father's Day, the veteran DJ, half of the dynamic duo Sphectacula & DJ Naves, sat down with TshisaLIVE to chat about life as a dad, the tug-of-war between turntables and tantrums, and why he's clinging to those personalised gowns for dear life.
'It's a great reminder of how important the role of a present father figure is in the family structure,' he says. 'And how privileged I am to be that person to my immediate and extended family.'
That sense of purpose filters into his music too. Gone are the days of explicit bars and parental advisory stickers. 'My kids are going to go through Dad's catalogue at some point,' he laughs. 'I don't want unsavoury language and subject matter to seem cool.'
And when it comes to his public image, the stakes are higher than just chart rankings: 'I want them to benefit from being Sphectacula's kids — not have doors closed on them. My legacy must make their lives easier, not harder.'
Being on stage is one thing, but being presen t is where the magic really happens. For Sphectacula, fatherhood is full of simple joys like beach days with his nine-year-old son.
'The sheer elation every time we go to the beach it's priceless,' he says. 'The innocent giggles and zero cares for anything else ... that's the good stuff.'
With his three-and-a-half month-old baby, it's the little things that hit the hardest. 'When he latches onto my face on a video call and immediately smiles that makes my day. Every time.
'To vocalise and show how much I love my children. They must never doubt it and go looking for father figures while I'm still alive and capable.'
And for all the dads out there chasing dreams while juggling bottles and bedtime routines, he has this advice: 'Hustle hard, but be a present father first and a wallet second. Your money can't buy you missed moments.
'As nurturing, stern but understanding, supportive ... a selfless solution to life's many hills. Someone they come to first.
'As someone who dedicated himself to impacting people positively with his talent and brought smiles to their faces at the mention of his name.'
