Legendary Apple engineer Bill Atkinson has died at 74.
Atkinson's family announced that he passed away last Thursday due to pancreatic cancer. Employee number 51 at Apple, Atkinson worked on the Macintosh, MacPaint, and HyperCard.
Wired and Daring Fireball have even more details on his life and career, and Apple CEO Tim Cook writes, 'He was a true visionary whose creativity, heart, and groundbreaking work on the Mac will forever inspire us.' In this video about Apple's influential pre-Macintosh 'OK' computer, you can hear Bill Atkinson talk about the Lisa, and how, in his words, it 'contributed toward the idea that computers were for everyone.'

Google targets cybercriminals behind massive Android malware scheme

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority TL;DR Google is suing the creators of BadBox 2.0, a botnet that infected 10 million off-brand Android devices. The malware often came pre-installed on cheap streaming boxes, tablets, and projectors, mostly made in China. Infected devices were used for ad fraud and to hide other cybercriminals' activity behind your home network. Before they even turned it on, the device was already infected. That's the reality for millions who unknowingly bought Android-powered devices hijacked by BadBox 2.0, a massive botnet that Google is now trying to shut down in court. As detailed in a blog post, Google is filing a new lawsuit in New York against the group behind the operation. It says BadBox 2.0 is the largest known botnet targeting internet-connected TVs and other Android-based gadgets. According to the company, more than ten million devices were compromised. These weren't high-end Android TVs or certified tablets. Think of off-brand streaming boxes, digital projectors, and low-cost tablets, mostly running Android Open Source Project, which lacks Google's built-in security protections. Many were sold under unfamiliar brand names, and in many cases, the malware was already baked in when buyers took them out of the box. Robert Triggs / Android Authority Once powered on and connected to the internet, the devices became part of a hidden network controlled by cybercriminals. Some were used to commit large-scale ad fraud, simulating fake ad clicks to steal money from advertisers. Others were sold off as part of 'residential proxy' services, allowing shady actors to route their traffic through real users' home networks and effectively hiding their tracks behind the unsuspecting user's IP address. The botnet was uncovered through a joint investigation by Google, HUMAN Security, and Trend Micro. Google says its Ad Traffic Quality team spotted the activity early, blocking bad traffic and shutting down thousands of accounts trying to profit from the scheme. On your end, Google Play Protect now flags and blocks apps with BadBox behavior, even if they're sideloaded from outside the Play Store. The FBI has also issued a public warning, urging people to check their connected devices for signs of tampering or strange behavior, especially if the hardware came from an unknown brand or required you to disable Google Play Protect during setup. The agency says most of the compromised gadgets were manufactured in China and sold with malware pre-installed, or infected shortly after setup via malicious apps from unofficial app stores. By taking the case to court, Google hopes to target the people behind the scheme. While the company's protections contained the damage, it's another reminder that the real cost of a budget streaming box might not be just what you pay at checkout. Got a tip? Talk to us! Microsoft Quietly Pulls the Plug on Its Movies and TV Store

Microsoft abruptly shut down its online movie and TV store. On Friday, the tech giant quietly updated both its general and Xbox support pages to reflect the changes. Users will no longer be able to buy new content from and the Microsoft Store on Windows and Xbox. Thankfully, Microsoft says if you already own movies or shows through the store you can still watch them via the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows devices. Microsoft says technical support will also continue for issues with any previously purchased content, at least for now. Unfortunately, Microsoft says it is not providing any refunds or ways for users to transfer their libraries to other digital video services. However, U.S. users can link select titles to Movies Anywhere, a platform that consolidates digital purchases from participating retailers into a single library. Microsoft did not explain why it suddenly shuttered the service. A spokesperson told Gizmodo in an email that the company 'has nothing further to share at this time.' The move appears like a quiet retreat from digital video, as video streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video reign supreme. Microsoft's support page even directs users to use competing services. 'The Xbox and Windows stores have other entertainment services that offer the latest home entertainment releases. The following transactional services are available today: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, among others,' the company said. Xbox users posted on Reddit that they started receiving notifications about the change this morning. 'Microsoft Movies & TV will no longer offer movies or TV shows for purchase. You can continue watching your previously purchased and personal videos on Xbox. Thank you for being part of the Xbox community,' the notification said, according to a screenshot on Reddit. Some Reddit users also said that they saw this coming when they noticed the number of sale promotions on the store started to dwindle in recent months. Others are worried that the Movies & TV app will also eventually be shut down and that they may permanently lose their purchased videos. This isn't the first time Microsoft has backed out of digital media. It shut down its Zune music service in 2015, then closed its successor, Groove Music, in 2017, when it told users to move their playlists to Spotify.
