Scientists Found an 8,000-Year-Old Figurine in a Cave. Its Engravings Tell the Story of an Ancient Culture.
It's the first cultural find from the area of the South Caucasus.
The sandstone figurine depicts a human, and stone tools were used to create the artwork.
There's no face on the oldest piece of art—a small sandstone figurine of a human from the Mesolithic era—ever found in one region of modern-day Azerbaijan.
In a study published by Archaeological Research in Asia, a team of archaeologists from both Japan and Azerbaijan showed how they used technology to investigate the details of the stone figurine that helps tell the story of the cultural shifts from Mesolithic to Neolithic.
'Its stylistic features considerably differ from those of Neolithic human figures in the region,' the study authors wrote, 'providing a valuable reference point for understanding the cultural processes in symbolic aspects during the Mesolithic-Neolithic interface in the South Caucasus.'
The archaeologists discovered the figurine in the Damjili Cave, which was first explored by archaeologists in 1953. Layers within the cave show a high density of Neolithic settlements, and trace life back to Middle Paleolithic and Mesolithic times.
The figurine in question (dubbed Unit 5.2) was initially almost discarded when discovered amidst a layer of sediment along the bank of the Kura River—why would a ovular chunk of sandstone be anything other than a rock laying on the bed of a river? Fortunately, someone noticed the faint lines hewn into the rock that were clearly the work of an artist. The team needed microscopic analysis to really see the engraving patterns (the only modification made to the stone). 'The overall pattern suggests that the artifact represents a human figure,' the authors wrote.
Carbon dating of the artifact places it between 6400 and 6100 B.C., but it required computed tomography analysis, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and scanning electron microscope analysis to really make the cultural value and stylistic differences from Neolithic examples clear.
One side of the figurine has more complicated engravings, likely indicating it's the front of the figure. At two inches long, half an inch wide, and about a third of an inch thick, the craftsmanship was detailed and required stone tools for engraving. Vertical lines on the top of the stone likely represent hair. There's also an explicitly delineated horizontal line across the hair that researchers believe was a hairband or edge of a cap, especially since the top of the head is not decorated. The figurine lacks facial features and there's no way to discern the intended sex of the figurine.
The lower body is less intensely decorated, but does have three horizontal lines that are likely a belt and vertical lines representing a loincloth or apron. The team found reddish areas with a higher level of iron content, opening up the possibility red pigments were part of the original design.
'The engraving seems to have been performed carefully in most parts, representing the high sophistication of the craftsman, although different intensities of the work are also observable,' the team wrote. Various depths and widths were used in the engraving style, showing a deviation in strokes. 'The most intense traces of engraving on the front side of the head suggest the manufacturer's emphasis on the head, although the details of the face of the figurine were not depicted,' they wrote.
Alongside the figurine, the team found remnants of stone fireplaces, bone, and flaked stones, but ground-stone artifacts are rare. 'The stone figure from Unit 5.2 is a rather exceptional find,' they wrote.
The style suggests a local tradition of artistic representation, although there could be cultural influence from Southwest Asia. 'This specimen is unique in the prehistory of the South Caucasus,' the team wrote. 'We hope that this research will provide a cautionary note when investigating small stone items from sites during the introduction of the agropastoral socio-economy in the South Caucasus. More discovery of Mesolithic portable arts should certainly contribute to our better understanding of the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the South Caucasus.'

But at least I'm not as vicious as the world's first cat owners. Recently, a study published in bioRxiv has called into question the timeline of cat ownership. Previously, scientists believed that cats became domesticated during the Neolithic period as African wildcats were drawn in by the cosy fires and abundance of food linked to farming, while humans welcomed their presence as they got rid of rodents. But not only does this new paper suggest that this timing is off (the authors put it at the 'first millennium BC' in Egypt), but it suggests the relationship believed to have existed between the first cat/human pairs was gorier than we thought. The scientists looked at ancient cat remains found in a variety of spots across Europe and North Africa, including a 9,500-year-old site in Cyprus. Though these had previously been believed to show domesticated cats, a combination of carbon dating, genetic testing, and bone research suggests they were actually wildcats. Their results suggest that the 'closening of human-cat relationships occurred more recently,' and appeared to have begun in Egypt for religious, and not practical, reasons. Cats, they explain, are linked to the Egyptian goddess Bastet, who first appeared with a lion's head, but was increasingly represented with the head of an African wildcat in later centuries. 'This transformation was coincident with the rise of cat sacrifice, whereby millions of free-ranging and specifically-reared cats were mummified as offerings to the goddess,' they wrote. As statues dedicated to Bastet tended to be in more arable areas, the rodent-killing benefits of cats may have proven useful to humans and 'provided the context for the tighter relationship between people and cats that led to the wildcat's domestication, motivated by their newly acquired divine status'. Still, the paper posits that we wanted them for sacrifices first; their more gentle and manageable traits were selected for easier handling. Neolithic moms decorated baby carriers with dog teeth
Preparation work for a high-voltage powerline project in eastern Germany has revealed a very unexpected archeological find: the gravesites of multiple women and infants dating back nearly 4,500 years. While somber, their remains and burial goods are helping experts better understand class, gender, and parenting dynamics of late Neolithic society known as the Corded Ware Culture. The discoveries are located near Krauschwitz, a small village about 53 miles northeast of Dresdeb. The site is one of multiple currently overseen by the country's State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology of Saxony-Anhalt. According to their announcement on July 9, archeological teams have already identified numerous ancient burials along the 105-mile SuedOstLink electrical grid route. However, none of them compared to the rare artifacts found close to Krauschwitz. Researchers are particularly astounded by the remains of leather bags intricately decorated with drilled dog teeth. Although the organic material decomposed long ago, the dental adornments remained arranged in overlapping patterns similar to roofing shingles. Archaeologists estimate each bag measured 11.8 inches by 7.9 inches, and featured as many as 350 teeth, usually sourced from dogs similar to today's Small Münsterländer pointers. The artisanry required to craft each satchel implies that their owners were elite women in their communities. Their placement in relation to each body also suggests the bags were worn slung around the front torso. However, many of these bags weren't empty at the time of their burial. In multiple cases, archeologists discovered infant bones either inside or near a woman's bag. In one instance, a bag was in the grave of a woman who died during pregnancy, which researchers believe indicates the baby carriers were 'personal, non-inheritable belongings.' Some of the infants' heads and limbs were also found wrapped in scarf-like textiles. These sashes included even more embroidered teeth, usually molars, possibly to function as protective wear for the babies. Taken altogether, the bags were likely both ceremonial and practical for their wearers. Today, they speak to both the harsh environment of the time, as well as the care that went into honoring the dead. These structures were built from trapezoidal wooden frames, then covered in loess—silt-sized sediment formed from wind-blown dust. The repeated use of the area as resting places for the deceased speaks to a longtime sense of reverence and community among the region's ancient peoples. A 20-person team will continue working on-site through the end of July to excavate and conserve additional artifacts. From there, the items will be further examined and likely displayed in museums. Once completed, the SuedOstLink power line will stand atop these locations—a symbol of humanity's technological advancements above ancient, poignant evidence of community and family.

Scientists Discover 'Unprecedented' Ancient Monument in France
Archaeologists say they have discovered an "unprecedented" monument in France. They outlined the discovery on the French-language site Inrap. That is the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research. "The archaeologists of the Inrap conducted an excavation in Marliens, about 20 kilometers east of Dijon, before the extension of a gravel (Eqiom) in the valley of the Ouh, a tributary of the Saône," the site wrote in a lengthy statement that included photos. They described the finding as one-of-a-kind, writing, 'This type of monument seems unprecedented and currently no comparison has been possible." According to Popular Mechanics, the scientists found a "never-seen-before mix of enclosures," and a site that "was in use across at least three distinct time periods." The Inrap article says the monument might have been linked to burials, but the archaeologists are doing more work to confirm that. "The only artifacts discovered in the ditches correspond to cut flints that would suggest a chrono-culture attribution to the Neolithic period," the researchers wrote. They excavated three areas and made discoveries of settlements "from the Neolithic to the first Iron Age." The oldest settlement was "characterized by a monument consisting of three nested the centre of the monument was a circular enclosure 11 m in diameter. To the north, an 8 m long horseshoe-shaped enclosure paired with the circular enclosure and the south, an open enclosure that dents the central enclosure," they wrote. "The presence of a layer of gravel, observed in the filling of the two lateral enclosures, testifies to the existence of a palisade. The various stratigraphic sections produced indicate that the three enclosures are contemporary," they added. The statement notes, "Traces of 'iron oxide' have been observed on one of the cuffs corresponding to pyrite, which is essential for lighting a fire.
