Chicago White Sox pay tribute to Bobby Jenks throughout 2005 World Series championship reunion celebration

Chicago Tribune12-07-2025
From the No. 45 on the back of the mound to the number appearing on the sleeves of the Chicago White Sox uniforms, there have been several reminders of Bobby Jenks' legacy at Rate Field.
The two-time All-Star pitcher died on July 4 in Sintra, Portugal, where he had been battling adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. He was 44.
Jenks played a pivotal role for the 2005 World Series championship club. Several of his teammates were in Chicago this weekend for a reunion celebration.
It also served as a chance to continue to pay tribute to Jenks.
'We had a chance to really think about him and honor him,' first baseman Paul Konerko said on Saturday.
During Saturday's pregame ceremony, the Sox played a video honoring Jenks. The crowd gave a standing ovation after the introduction of Jenks' family.
'This is a special (reunion), and it's something you don't take for granted,' outfielder Jermaine Dye said Friday. 'You take in all the memories. Obviously we are going to miss one teammate, Bobby Jenks. A special teammate, a special friend, a special guy on our team. I know fans probably didn't get to see the Bobby Jenks behind the scenes like we did. They saw him as a hard-nosed closer, who went out there. But we saw the other side of him, a great guy that loved to joke around, smiled a lot.
'He's definitely going to be missed.'
Dye closed his speech during Saturday's ceremony by remembering Jenks: 'A great teammate and a great guy. We love you, we thank you.'
Pitcher Mark Buehrle led a toast to Jenks at the end of Saturday's pregame event.
'I'm sure I've lost teammates over the years, but losing somebody like that — he's a little kid in a big-man body, always goofing off, always having fun,' Buehrle said Friday. 'Not having him here, hearing that news, it hit me a little harder than I thought it would when I first heard of it. It's definitely very sad.'
The Sox honored Buehrle Friday by unveiling a statue of the left-hander on the outfield concourse. Buehrle began his speech during the ceremony by remembering Jenks.
'He was throwing 100 (mph) before other guys were throwing 100,' Buehrle said afterward. 'He just had nasty stuff. He had a dominating presence out there. He was just feared. Guys look out there and see this big dude out there. I know I was scared of him in the clubhouse a few times, like, 'I'm not getting on this guy's bad side.''
Jenks went 14-18 with a 3.40 ERA, 173 saves and 334 strikeouts over 329 relief appearances while pitching for the Sox from 2005-10. He ranks second among franchise relief leaders in saves, sixth in appearances and seventh in strikeouts. The Sox will wear the No. 45 patch for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Dye laughed and said, 'Can't tell you that,' when asked to share a favorite story about Jenks.
He then continued, 'I always liked to poke fun, I would come from behind him and he does not like to be tickled or touched. I used to tickle him a lot. But he used to play with my kids when they were younger, that's just Bobby. A little jokester. Played pranks a lot on guys. Just sad that he's not going to be here with us.'
Ozzie Guillén, who guided the 2005 team to the title as the manager, said Jenks was 'special for everyone.'
'Whoever you talk to, they will tell you how special Bobby was,' Guillén said on Friday. 'Special. He's a baby bear. He had a closer mentality but when he left the mound it's like, 'We're going to Disneyland tomorrow. OK.' That type of guy.'
Recalling the family bond Jenks had with teammates, coaches and the Sox organization as a whole, Guillén said, 'He knows exactly they love him.'
'And good or bad, they will tell him right away what's going on,' Guillén said. 'We feel him? Yes, of course. I don't feel him because he made us win the championship. I feel him because of what kind of guy he was.
'You never die when people will remember you every day, every time.'
Konerko remembers conversations when Jenks managed independent baseball.
'After so long of fighting a lot of things, he was in an awesome place and putting other people in good places, that's hard to do,' Konerko said. 'I'm glad he was able to get to that place before this, but it just sucks he wasn't able to have more time to do it.'

2025 Heisman Trophy Odds: Is 'Summer Favorite' Arch Manning a Good Bet?

One of the things I've learned covering sports betting over the last decade is it's not the best idea to bet the Heisman Trophy preseason favorite. Not a single "summer favorite" has won since 2015, and we've seen doozies like Sam Darnold, Leonard Fournette, Spencer Rattler and DJ Uiagalelei sit atop the betting boards as the calendar flipped to August. Conversely, we've seen players like Travis Hunter (50/1), Lamar Jackson (100/1) and Joe Burrow (200/1) defy betting odds to hoist the Heisman, while DeVonta Smith wasn't even listed before the 2020 campaign. Enter Arch Manning. The Texas quarterback with the million-dollar name is this year's favorite with a consensus price of around +600 in the market. Manning possesses insane upside on a team co-favored to win the national championship. That said, he threw for 939 yards last season with 13 total touchdowns. If Arch's last name was "Martin," the price might be double. Arch Manning's 2025 Heisman odds +500 Caesars ($10 wins $50) +500 Circa ($10 wins $50) +500 Westgate ($10 wins $50) +600 BetMGM ($10 wins $60) +700 DraftKings ($10 wins $70) +750 FanDuel ($10 wins $75) "I would throw anybody out at 5 or 6/1," Heisman voter and Pick Six Previews pundit Brett Ciancia told FOX Sports. "I wouldn't touch anything like that. It's such a crap shoot in August every year. "That's the beauty of college football. It's such a mystery how these Heisman races and All-American candidates will play out. Remember, Carson Beck was the favorite last year to win the Heisman and he ended up nowhere close. "I wouldn't touch any Heisman favorite." Ciancia's early darling is Clemson QB Cade Klubnik. "Even that's a little bit chalky at 9/1," he admitted. "He's a pretty safe bet coming in as a playoff contender. [Clemson] is going to be in the playoff mix, given how weak the ACC is. A very veteran roster around him, and they're building off a conference championship. That's my chalk pick. "If you want a lottery bet, I would go with Oklahoma's John Mateer at 30/1. It's going to be a high-powered, new-look offense there. He tore it up at Washington State with this same coordinator. I don't know if it's just the towel or the headband, but he looks like Baker Mayfield out there. "Similar playing style, he's going to get a ton of stats and if the Sooners make a run in the SEC, he'll be looked at as a Heisman candidate." I've buttered my bread with the aforementioned Beck, who transferred from Georgia to Miami to replace Heisman finalist and No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward. There's something to be said about a quarterback changing scenery to play in a system that's more conducive to putting up big numbers. FanDuel was dealing Beck at 37-1 a couple of weeks ago and yes, I would still bet him at 25-1 or higher if you're a little late to the party. Please don't bet FanDuel's current price at 18-1. Truth be told, Manning has the ability, name and surrounding talent to take this Heisman race and run with it. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about him throwing three touchdowns against Ohio State in Columbus on Aug. 30 and never looking back. As we've learned, though, it's usually not that simple. Just ask Uncle Eli or Uncle Peyton. Sam Panayotovich is a sports betting analyst for FOX Sports and the BetMGM Network. Why Yankees jumped on Ryan McMahon trade — and gave up on Eugenio Suarez

The Yankees prioritized getting on the board rather than hitting a home run at third base. They really liked Eugenio Suarez, but felt Arizona had a strong group of contenders vying for the slugger, perhaps led by the Cubs. That convinced the Yankees that there would be a waiting period, through the weekend at least, as even after trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Mariners, the Diamondbacks wanted to use more time to learn if they had a last-ditch chance to get into the wild card race. And then with multiple teams on Suarez, the bidding could go back and forth all the way to Thursday's trade deadline. That would guarantee a rise to a prospect cost that the Yankees did not want to expend on a walk-year player, as brilliant as Suarez's power has been since last year's All-Star break. And there was a fear of waiting until the deadline and not getting Suarez … and then what? The Yankees wanted to hold onto better prospects because internally they see pitching as a bigger priority than third base. That is how they ended up on Friday dealing two lower-level pitching prospects – lefty Griffin Herring and righty Josh Grosz – to the Rockies for Ryan McMahon. They are seeing it as an upgrade at third base – almost anything would have to be – while staying flexible to add elsewhere. Advertisement 5 Eugenio Suarez is the top third baseman on the trade market. AP It is even still possible that the Yankees add another position player – someone such as Minnesota switch-hitter Willi Castro or Washington's righty-swinging Amed Rosario – as they search for batters who do well against lefties (as McMahon makes the daily lineup even more left-handed) and have positional maneuverability. But the main area of fixation now is to improve the pitching.

With the trade deadline almost upon us, now is a good time to take a look at who oddsmakers see as the top World Series contenders in both the National League and the American League. Earlier this week, we broke down the odds and best bets for the MVP and Cy Young awards. Today, our post-All Star look at the MLB futures odds continues with the National League winner market. National League Winner Odds (as of July 25) Team (record) DraftKings FanDuel bet365 Dodgers (60-43) +150 +120 +120 Phillies (58-44) +475 +500 +550 Mets (59-44 +475 +550 +550 Cubs (60-42) +600 +650 +600 Brewers (61-41) +750 +750 +700 Giants (54-49) +1600 +2400 +3000 Padres (55-48) +1700 +1700 +1500 Can L.A. Fend Off Pitching Injuries, Repeat As NL Champs? Though the Dodgers are just one of five NL teams with between 58 and 61 wins so far this year, their status as the clear favorites in this market makes sense given their firepower and recent track record. In addition to runaway NL MVP favorite Shohei Ohtani, L.A.'s lineup features All-Stars at catcher (Will Smith) and first base (Freddie Freeman), and Yoshinobu Yamamoto was just named an All-Star in his second season in the big leagues. But while the Dodgers are first in MLB in runs scored and rank among the best teams in baseball by almost every offensive metric (and also boast a staggering eight players with double-digit home runs), their pitching staff has struggled as a whole so far this year. L.A.'s banged up arms have collectively been below-average in terms of ERA (4.28) and most standard pitching stats through 103 games With two of the top pitchers during last year's playoff run -- Jack Flaherty and Walker Buehler -- now with Detroit and Boston, the Dodgers need Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell and Ohtani healthy alongside Yamamoto and veteran Clayton Kershaw to make another postseason run. The good news for Dodgers backers is that Glasnow, who has been limited to eight appearances, recently returned to the mound, and Snell is expected to be back in action soon. It's hard to argue that if the Dodgers are 100 percent healthy (and yes, that's a big if), they'll be tough to beat in the NL playoffs this year after handling the Padres, Mets and Yankees in last year's postseason. National League Winner Best Bet: Philadelphia Best odds: +550 at bet365 First of all, as chalky as it is, a bet on the Dodgers at +150 makes a ton of sense right now. But to me, the team with the best combination of upside and value based on its current odds is Philadelphia. At +550, the Zack Wheeler-led Phillies are intriguing thanks to their outstanding starting pitching staff led by current NL Cy Young favorite Wheeler and two other Cy Young contenders* in Christopher Sanchez (2.40 ERA over 124 innings) and Ranger Suarez (2.66 ERA over 88 innings). The Phillies lineup, from Kyle Schwarber (34 home runs) and Bryce Harper (14 home runs in just 74 games this year), is also solid, though it could use an upgrade to take down the likes of the Dodgers in the playoffs. The biggest weakness for this team right now is probably its bullpen. If Philly acquires a quality reliever between now and the deadline, look out. Wagering on Philly in this spot is dicey because it's hard to know what -- if any -- moves President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski will make between now and the deadline. Even if they stand pat, though, the Phillies are tempting at this price given their 8-7 record so far this year vs. the Dodgers, Mets and Cubs. *Let's be serious: it's unlikely this award is going to anyone other than Wheeler or Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes. Still, it's notable that right now, Sanchez and Suarez have the third- and fifth-shortest NL Cy Young odds at FanDuel.
