UN expert urges states to cut Israel trade ties over ‘apocalyptic' Gaza situation
UN human rights expert Francesca Albanese has disclosed a list of 60 companies that supports Israeli actions in Gaza.
GENEVA – A United Nations expert on July 3 called on states to impose an arms embargo and cut off trade and financial ties with Israel, which she alleged is waging a 'genocidal campaign' in Gaza.
In a speech to the UN Human Rights Council, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese said: 'The situation in
the occupied Palestinian territory is apocalyptic.'
'Israel is responsible for one of the cruellest genocides in modern history,' she added, in a speech that was met with a burst of applause from the Geneva council.
Israel's diplomatic mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Albanese's speech.
Israel has rejected accusations of genocide in Gaza, citing its right to self-defence following the deadly Oct 7, 2023, Hamas attack. Its delegate was not present in the room in line with a new policy to disengage with the council that Israel says has an anti-Semitic bias.
Ms Albanese, one of dozens of independent UN-mandated experts to document abuses around the world, was presenting her latest report that
named over 60 companies she said were involved in supporting Israeli settlements and military actions in Gaza.
'What I expose is not a list. It is a system, and that is to be addressed,' she told the council.
'We must reverse the tide,' she added, calling for states to impose a full arms embargo, suspend all trade agreements and ensure companies face legal consequences for their involvement in violations of international law.
Israel's diplomatic mission in Geneva earlier this week said Ms Albanese's latest report was 'legally groundless, defamatory and a flagrant abuse of her office'. REUTERS

District Judge Wong Li Tein told him that he has to make an online application for approval to travel. Seng then told the court that he intends to seek legal advice and his case has been adjourned to Aug 1. The area where the incident allegedly took place falls under Hougang SMC, where lawyer Marshall Lim represented the ruling party against the WP candidate Dennis Tan, who is also a lawyer. El Salvador president denies that Abrego Garcia was tortured in prison

In a court filing in the U.S. on Wednesday, Abrego Garcia gave a first-hand description of his experience at the Salvadoran high-security prison CECOT and reported severe mistreatment. His lawyers said he lost 31 pounds (14 kg) in his first two weeks there and was "subjected to severe mistreatment upon arrival at CECOT, including but not limited to severe beatings, severe sleep deprivation, inadequate nutrition, and psychological torture." Bukele disputed that in a social media post on Thursday. "But the man wasn't tortured, nor did he lose weight," Bukele said. "If he'd been tortured, sleep-deprived, and starved, why does he look so well in every picture?" Bukele's post included pictures and video of Abrego Garcia in detention. A Maryland resident whose wife and young child are U.S. citizens, Abrego Garcia was deported from the U.S. on March 15 to El Salvador, despite a 2019 immigration court ruling that he not be sent there because he could be persecuted by gangs. Officials called his removal an "administrative error." Critics of U.S. President Donald Trump pointed to the case as evidence his administration was prioritizing increased deportations over due process - the principle that people in the U.S., whether citizens or not, can contest governmental actions against them in courts. Trump has pledged to crack down on illegal immigration and says Abrego Garcia belongs to the MS-13 gang, an accusation his lawyers deny. The Justice Department brought Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. on June 6 after securing an indictment charging him with working with at least five co-conspirators as part of a smuggling ring to bring immigrants to the U.S. illegally. He has pleaded not guilty and the government says it plans to deport him again. He is currently detained in Tennessee while his criminal case is pending. REUTERS
