SPAN Arts presents: An Autopsy of a Mother, a Bear and a Fridge

A contemporary dance-theatre experience by Deborah Light
SPAN ARTS is proud to present Deborah Light — acclaimed choreographer, movement director, and mother — in her first solo show, An Autopsy of a Mother, a Bear and a Fridge. This bold and visceral work of contemporary dance-theatre delves into the complexities of motherhood through three seemingly unrelated objects.
With a distinctive blend of clinical precision, raw vulnerability, feminist fury, and wicked humour, Deborah unpacks the symbolic connections between a mother, a bear, and a fridge. In doing so, she lays bare personal truths and the societal pressures that weigh on the female body, in a powerful critique of patriarchal systems.
Known for her collaborative work across dance, theatre, film, and site-based performance, Deborah is also co-director of Light/Ladd/Emberton and lectures in movement at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. This new solo show is supported by Arts Council Wales, Chapter, NDCWales, YMa, SPAN Arts, and Taking Flight.
The performance will take place at Canolfan Hermon on Thursday, May 16 at 7:00pm. After the show, audiences are invited to stay for an informal post-show conversation with Deborah over tea and cake, to reflect on the themes of the piece.
Please note: The show is recommended for ages 14+ and contains references to death, motherhood/matrescence, surgery, violence against women, gender-based inequality, ageing, climate change, and may include strong language.

Woman who died for two minutes reveals she passed to 'the other side' and met two blue-skinned beings

A woman who was officially pronounced dead for two minutes before coming back to life has revealed the surprising sensations she endured during those 120 seconds. Nicole Meeuws's heart stopped after she suffered from a series of serious complications while giving birth. She recalled being 'pulled' from her body and entering a tunnel of light while her physical form was laying lifeless on a hospital bed. She said both time and fear didn't exist after passing over to 'the other side.' She explained to NeedToKnow recently: 'I found myself passing through a tunnel of blue and white light, not a beam, but a corridor that felt alive. 'It didn't feel frightening. It felt like I was being called home. The light had a temperature, a tone, almost like music made of water.' After passing through the 'light,' she said she came to an 'immense glowing space.' She added: 'The colors were not of this world, they were luminous tones of silver, soft violets, deep radiant blues – and they didn't strain the eyes. 'The chamber was vast, larger than any earthly structure, and everything pulsed gently like a heartbeat. And then I saw them.' Nicole recalled being greeted by blue-skinned beings with human faces, similar to the creatures in the film Avatar. While she didn't understand their language, she said they made her feel at home and gave her the message telepathically that life is actually an illusion - and we only start living when we die. 'Two towering beings seated on marble-like thrones, shimmering with energy. 'Their eyes were large and indigo, filled with kindness and recognition. They looked human, but had gentle gills on their cheeks. 'I remember seeing their fish-like tails, rather than legs, covered in scales. They were both male and female intertwined and didn't speak in words – but I understood everything they had to tell me.' Nicole, from Greece, who ultimately lost her child during birth, said they told her that she was never meant to have children and that her gift, instead, was to teach people about 'the other side.' After what felt like a lifetime, but was actually only a few minutes, she was 'zapped' back into her physical body. 'I felt more known than I had ever felt in my life; I didn't want to leave. 'I understood this place, this feeling, and I truly believe it was the original home from which we all come from. 'I learned that death is not an end, it's a return to our actual lives.' Afterwards, her husband, Christos, 65, a specialized doctor, tried to speak to her, but she could only reply in a high-pitched tone and an 'unfamiliar' language that she had never learned. She said: 'It sounded like dolphin clicks. It continued for minutes, which left everyone around us stunned. 'But I couldn't stop it - it was coming through me, not from me. My senses were heightened and I could hear emotion in people's voices as color. I returned completely different; almost reborn.' Nicole, who hasn't had any near-death experiences since, said she often has visions of the blue beings who greeted her on the other side. She believes they are from the Apkallu interdimensional tribe, which are non-alien creatures - otherwise referred to as Demigods - that are said to have given civilization to mankind. Now, her mission is to spread the message that 'love is stronger than death.' She concluded: 'Love will always win; it's where we came from. We're all one big family, regardless of boundaries, cultures, religion and politics. 'Everything that exists came from the same spark. The more we hold onto fear, hate and lies, the easier it is to control humanity. 'To create heaven on Earth, we must spend each day spreading love. I'm no longer afraid of death because I know what's waiting for me on the other side. 'It was a beginning, not an end.'

Noel Fielding makes rare appearance with partner Lliana Bird at BST Hyde Park after he sparked health worries by quitting TV series - as festival's final day is cancelled

Noel Fielding made a rare public appearance on Saturday with his partner Lliana Bird as they attended British Summertime Hyde Park together. Earlier this year, the 52-year-old presenter and comedian starting to regain his presence on social media following concerns for his health. He then made a return to hosting Bake Off, after there were reportedly discussions he would be stepping down. Since then, Noel has kept out of the spotlight, with the festival in London this weekend being an unexpected sighting. He was seen in good spirits as he watched Neil Young headline the event - before it was announced that the festival is cancelled tomorrow. It will no longer be going ahead after Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) pulled out of the headline slot. Musician Lynne, 77, who was billed to play on Sunday alongside his band, decided against performing on the advice of doctors following a 'systemic infection'. A statement from organisers said: 'Following the news that Jeff Lynne's ELO will not be able to perform at BST Hyde Park due to medical reasons, Sunday 13 July's event will sadly be cancelled. 'Ticket holders will be refunded and contacted directly by their ticket agent with further details.' Noel's partner Lliana - who is a broadcaster and writer - was by his side as they enjoyed the day out together, reportedly accompanied by his brother Michael, too. Lliana, 43, looked gorgeous in a floaty heart-printed smock dress and a pair of dark shades. The pair walked side-by-side as they headed to the main stage, with Noel stopping for photos with fans as he strolled through the park. Noel looked cool in a pink shirt and cowboy hat, adding a leather biker jacket for extra detail. It comes after towards the end of last year, reports stated Noel did not show up for Dick Turpin filming after the Christmas holidays, despite two thirds of the series already filmed. Dick Turpin insiders said Noel, who played the lead role of the legendary highwayman, was unavailable for scheduled and rescheduled filming dates. Cast and crew were told at the time that it had been scrapped due to 'the illness of a key cast member'. A spokesperson for Noel told the Mail: 'This is a private and confidential matter regarding our client's health. We are saddened by the decision to cease production but we cannot make any further comment on this matter.' A source close to the show told The Times: 'Noel has said that he can't film any more and so there was no choice but to stop. 'It's not a decision that was taken lightly and they wouldn't have got to this extreme result if every possible solution hadn't been exhausted. 'People have been very concerned about Noel's wellbeing and given him time to recover but there are also significant repercussions. Some people are furious.'
