Urban Decay Appoints Lochie Stonehouse As Its New Global Makeup Artist In Residence
For years, we've waxed lyrical about the calibre of creatives responsible for putting Aotearoa New Zealand on the map – the dedication to their craft cementing our reputation as a vibrant creative hub at the bottom of the world.
One such creative is leading makeup artist Lochie Stonehouse, whose makeup fluency has drawn attention from some of the world's top brands.
Now, the avant-garde makeup artist has been recognised by a brand as sharp and skilful as he is, with Urban Decay appointing Lochie as its new global makeup artist in residence.
It's a milestone moment not only for Lochie, but for the New Zealand makeup industry as a whole, with countless artists quick to reply to the announcement post with their messages of support and excitement.
A brief history
Lochie cut his teeth at M.A.C, spending six years working alongside some of the country's most reputable artists, including Kiekie Stanners, Sarika Patel and Liz Hyun.
He was later recognised by the global makeup powerhouse L'Oreal for his talent and was appointed as the director of artistry for L'Oreal Luxe, encompassing Lancôme, YSL Beaute and Giorgio Armani.
His standout career has featured a raft of highlights, including creating bold beauty looks for celebrities on screen and stage, such as Lorde, Benee, Charli XCX, Rita Ora and Troye Sivan.
He's directed New Zealand Fashion Week shows for the likes of Kathryn Wilson and Hailwood, and travelled the international Fashion Week circuit, which spans New York, Paris, London and Milan.
Beyond this, he's developed close relationships with editors and been entrusted with dynamic beauty looks to cover the likes of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Inprint, Viva, Fashion Quarterly and more.
In late 2024, Lochie shared his enviable collection of designer makeup with Vogue, which drew global attention.
The next chapter
But this most recent appointment is set to be a career-defining moment for the well-travelled artist.

The announcement was flanked by a series of tongue-in-cheek campaign videos featuring recognisable TikTok stars, including Ariel Kytsya, who boldly declared makeup is currently in its 'blandemic' era.

Westenra 'heartbroken' over friends' deaths in LA homicide

Photo: Instagram/Hayley Westenra Kiwi singer Hayley Westenra says she's "completely heartbroken" after learning of the double homicide of her long-time friends American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca. The Los Angeles Police Department said the couple, both 70, were found dead with gunshot wounds on July 14, 2025, but their investigation found a radio call had been made about a possible burglary at their home four days earlier. Police believe the couple returned home and were confronted by the suspect, who already gained entry. Police said a 22-year-old suspect has now been arrested and charged with murder. In a message posted on social media, Westenra said she only found out the news of the death of her "surrogate aunty and uncle" this morning. "They were the KINDEST of souls. I'd met Robin & Tom over 20 years ago through work and then we became lifelong friends," the 38-year-old said. "I stayed with them many times including my last night in LA when I was escaping a very bad relationship (they likely saved my life)." Westenra shared a video of her and Deluca performing Lovers Game, which she said Kaye wanted her to post when they had been messaging a few months ago. "I want people to remember them this way … bright, loyal & loving souls." Born in Christchurch, Westenra rose to fame after she signed with Universal Records New Zealand at the age of 12 and released a self-titled album in 2001. In a statement, a spokesperson for the American Idol series told ABC that Kaye had been with the TV show since 2009. "We are devastated to hear of Robin and her dear husband, Tom's, passing," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time." Kaye also served as music supervisor on Lip Sync Battle, After the Sunset, The Singing Bee and Q'Viva!: The Chosen as well as multiple Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. Rebel Wilson sued by production company of her own film
Star Australian actor Rebel Wilson is facing more legal action, accused of trying to block distribution of the first film she directed. Filed in the NSW Supreme Court today, production company AI Film has alleged Wilson falsely accused it of trying to block the release of her directorial debut. The lawsuit also alleged Wilson falsely accused a producer of sexual misconduct towards the lead female actor on the movie. The film in question is the 2024 musical The Deb, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Months earlier, Wilson is accused of using her Instagram account to make "false and derogatory statements" about the film's other producers, with Wilson's mother company Camp Sugar and AI Film splitting the rights. ADVERTISEMENT "They included that they had engaged in inappropriate conduct toward the lead actress in the film, embezzled the film's funds and were trying to block the release of the film," the filings read. The sexual misconduct allegations centre around actor Charlotte MacInnes, who Wilson claimed on Instagram had been subject to inappropriate advances by one of the film's producers. "When an actress on her first feature film is asked by a producer to stay in the same apartment as them, and then makes a complaint to me as the director saying said producer 'asked her to have a bath and a shower with her and it made her feel uncomfortable' – what am I supposed to do?" (Source: 1News) MacInnes has denied the allegations and said "false accusations undermine real victims and I won't be the subject of a fabricated narrative". Wilson has since reiterated the allegation and said MacInnes had since been given a job by the producer and secured a record deal. ADVERTISEMENT The suit accused Wilson of undermining the attempts of producers to secure a distribution deal for the film by "continuing to make public and false allegations and by deliberately undermining the negotiations with potential distributors". It does not specifically allege why she would attempt to prevent distribution of her own film. A separate lawsuit filed in the United States has claimed Wilson wanted "credit for work she did not do, and to overshadow young, upcoming artists who truly deserved the credit". Wilson was not awarded a writing credit for the film. The legal action is seeking damages, an apology and corrective advertising. AI Film said the legal proceedings were "regrettable but essential to ensure The Deb's timely release". MacInnes also backed the legal action. Auckland media boss confirmed as mystery buyer of $11.2m vacant waterfront Westmere section
And while the global media industry is struggling with falling advertising revenue and widespread layoffs, the Remix owner last month splashed out on a vacant West End Rd section on the shoreline of Coxs Bay. The 1000sq m site is just a few doors down from the $26m mansion owned by rich-listers Anna Mowbray and Ali Williams. Architect David Ponting's design for the home that is being built on the 1000sqm block of land on West End Rd, in Auckland's Westmere. Its $11.2m price tag includes plans for a luxury five-bedroom, three-bathroom home designed by architect David Ponting, complete with its own boat ramp. The vendor was Auckland property developer Jason Ellingham, who also owns the neighbouring $5m home where a worker was crushed to death during construction in 2023. In an unusual deal, Ellingham has agreed to build Phin's new home as part of the purchase price. It's understood Ellingham had planned to build the house for himself but his plans changed. The vacant site had been on the market for about a year until the contract was inked with Phin. The Herald sought comment from Phin about the timeline for the build, what attracted him to the site, and how a media company owner could afford his lavish property portfolio. He declined to comment. Works commence on $11.2m vacant site Works on the site have recently commenced, with contractors rebuilding a rock seawall around the property. A resource consent has been issued for the work and rebuild of the existing boat ramp, which sits on land unlawfully reclaimed more than 100 years ago.
