Referrals Of Terrorist And Violent Extremist Content Increased By 10 Percent In 2024
The findings, published today in the 2024 Digital Violent Extremism Transparency Report, also show that 38 formal take-down notices were issued by the Department to platforms hosting objectionable content.
The Department of Internal Affairs has revealed a 10 percent increase in referrals to its Digital Violent Extremism team in 2024, with 974 URLs flagged for suspected extremist online content.
The findings, published today in the 2024 Digital Violent Extremism Transparency Report, also show that 38 formal take-down notices were issued by the Department to platforms hosting objectionable content.
88% of the content referred to the team was removed by platforms following intervention by the Department.
'Every one of the URLs we issued informal take-down notices to, contained images and videos promoting or encouraging violent extremism or terrorist attacks. Much of this content promoted or depicted the violent attack or death of innocent victims for the gratification of others,' says Jared Mullen, Director of the Digital Safety Group.
The report also reveals the that investigators are continuing to see the cases connected to hybridized threat groups. These are violent online groups who extort minors online into recording self-harm and sexually explicit acts. These groups often involve terrorist and violent extremism, gore, and child sexual exploitation material.
'Online groups such as these are responsible for exploiting the most vulnerable members of society by coercing them to share extreme and egregious content,' says Mullen.
These offenders use online platforms to cherry pick vulnerable members of society to systematically victimize. We are working closely with our partners to do everything in our power to apprehend these offenders and safeguard victims.'
The most commonly reported ideology type in 2024 was Identity motivated, specifically white-identity. This was reflected in the continued presence of content relating to the Christchurch terrorist attacks, which accounted for 38 percent of referred content in 2024.
The Digital Violent Extremism team is responsible for keeping New Zealanders safe from online harm by responding to and preventing the spread of objectionable material thatpromotes or encouragesviolent extremism. The team continues to work withgovernment and community partners, in New Zealand and around the world, to prevent, deter, and prosecute those who spread this material.

Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden welcomes the successful first reading of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill, calling it a major milestone in helping businesses employ and contract with confidence. Justice For The Cuban People On The Fourth Anniversary Of The July 11 Protests
July 11, 2025 Four years ago, thousands of Cubans peacefully took to the streets to demand a future free from tyranny. The Cuban regime responded with violence and repression, unjustly detaining thousands, including over 700 who are still imprisoned and subjected to torture or abuse. Today, the Department of State is taking steps to implement President Trump's strengthened Cuba policy outlined in National Security Presidential Memorandum-5 from June 30, 2025. In solidarity with the Cuban people and the island's political prisoners, the United States is designating key regime leaders under Section 7031(c) for their involvement in gross violations of human rights. We are also taking steps to impose visa restrictions on numerous Cuban judicial and prison officials responsible for, or complicit in, the unjust detention and torture of July 2021 protestors. In addition, the Department is updating the Cuba Restricted List and the Cuba Prohibited Accommodations List to include 11 regime-linked properties, including the new 42-story 'Torre K' hotel, to prevent U.S. funds from reaching the island's corrupt repressors. The U.S. will continue to stand for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people of Cuba, and make clear no illegitimate, dictatorial regimes are welcome in our hemisphere. The designations of Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, López Miera, Álvarez Casas, and their immediate family members are made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024 (Div. F, P.L. 118-47), as carried forward by the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2025 (Div. A, P.L. 119-4). The steps to impose visa restrictions on Cuban officials are taken under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Online Casino Gambling Bill Passes First Reading
Minister of Internal Affairs Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden's Bill seeking to protect players who gamble online by introducing safeguards to the currently unregulated online gambling market in New Zealand, passed its first reading in Parliament today. ' Currently, New Zealanders can legally access thousands of offshore gambling websites. But the market is unregulated, so there are no player safety standards or oversight of harm minimisation,' says Ms van Velden. 'My intention with this Bill is to ensure that online gambling is safer for New Zealanders who wish to gamble online to do so. In addition, that companies providing this service contribute to tax revenue and funding the services that treat gambling harm in New Zealand.' The Bill allows for up to 15 online gambling licences to be auctioned, with companies applying for a licence needing to meet strict criteria, including having a harm prevention strategy and providing information on their compliance history. The Department of Internal Affairs will enforce the new regulatory system, with all costs recovered from fees on licensed gambling companies. Fines of up to $5 million can be applied to companies for breaking the rules. 'The most important part of this Bill is protecting New Zealanders who enjoy gambling online by introducing robust safety measures for licensed operators. 'The Bill will now proceed to select committee, and I would encourage interested New Zealanders to have their say when public submissions open,' says Ms van Velden. Note: Conditions of holding an online casino licence will include (but are not limited to): A suitable age verification system to prevent gambling by anyone under 18 years Contributing 1.24 percent of profits to the Problem Gambling Levy which is used to fund problem gambling support services Abiding by strict restrictions on advertising, including not advertising to children. The detailed rules on advertising will be set out in regulations that are currently being developed.
