Lynx stay unbeaten with second-half surge to down Valkyries

Hindustan Times02-06-2025
Natisha Hiedeman scored all eight of her points in two second-half runs, Napheesa Collier returned from a night off with a game-high 24 points and the Minnesota Lynx surged past the host Golden State Valkyries 86-75 on Sunday night in San Francisco.
Returning from a sore knee, Collier completed her third consecutive double-double with a season-high-tying 11 rebounds, and Courtney Williams added 20 points for Minnesota, which remained unbeaten through seven games.
Veronica Burton had a team-high 21 points and Kate Martin a career-high 14 for Golden State, which led by one at halftime and retained a 56-53 advantage after Kayla Thornton's interior hoop in the third minute of the third period.
But the Lynx, who made the WNBA finals last season, took charge from there, starting with a 14-2 burst that featured 3-pointers from Hiedeman, Williams and Bridget Carleton.
Attempting to avoid a third consecutive loss, the Valkyries hung within 68-60 through quarter's end, before Hiedeman had two hoops one that she turned into a three-point play and Collier added a basket in a 7-0 flurry to open the fourth period that broke the game open at 75-60.
Williams also found time for five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Her three 3-pointers in seven attempts helped Minnesota outscore the hosts 33-27 from beyond the arc despite taking eight fewer attempts.
Kayla McBride chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds, while Carleton had 12 points for the Lynx, who completed a two-game Western sweep after dispatching the Phoenix Mercury on Friday without Collier.
The Lynx and Valkyries were meeting for the first time.
Thornton finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Golden State, which had played the defending-champion New York Liberty on the road in its two previous games.
Julie Vanloo dished off a team-high four assists and swiped two steals for the Valkyries, an expansion team that has sold out all three of its home games at the spacious Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors.

With Byron Buxton in question, Twins shoot for series win vs. Nats

The most important moment for the Minnesota Twins on Sunday might happen well before the first pitch. That's because All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton is scheduled to undergo testing on his injured left side before the Twins take on the Washington Nationals in Minneapolis. The 31-year-old Buxton left Saturday's game because of left-side soreness. Washington added insult to injury when it cruised to a 9-3 win over the Twins to even the three-game series. Buxton might not be in the Twins' lineup for the rubber match. Either way, Minnesota is eager for a series win after dropping its first two series after the All-Star break. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said the series finale offers a chance for a fresh start. "Not the game we intended to play," Baldelli said. "(Friday's) game was a brilliant game, and then we came in (Saturday) and played like this. I'd like to win the series (on Sunday) and get back to playing complete baseball." The lineup might be incomplete. Buxton went 0-for-3 on Saturday and left the game after he experienced pain. The team hopes the injury isn't serious, but history offers some cause for consternation because Buxton has dealt with a spate of injuries throughout his career. This season, he is hitting .282 with 23 homers, 59 RBIs and 17 steals in 85 games. "He was actually, what I would say, is relatively upbeat," Baldelli said. "I talked to him during the game, I popped upstairs to check on him. ... "We're just going to get him imaged (Sunday) morning just to see what we're dealing with. He felt it more running than anything else. When you have some soreness in your side and you don't feel it as much swinging and you don't feel it as much -- on the offensive end, you feel it running -- that's kind of a unique thing. I'm not going to speculate any more than that. We're going to get him looked at (Sunday)." Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin (7-5, 4.81 ERA) will take the mound against the team that he grew up supporting. Irvin was born in the nearby suburb of Bloomington, Minn., and starred at Jefferson High School before moving on to the Oklahoma Sooners. Irvin is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in one career start against the Twins, a 3-2 Minnesota win on May 22, 2024. That was a home game for the Nationals, and this will be the first time he has pitched in Minnesota. "It means everything," Irvin said. "It's important to put it all in perspective. This is what got me here: Growing up a Twins fan, falling in love with the Twins and just how much they meant to me in developing my passion for baseball. "The people around me that I grew up playing with, I get to see a lot of my buddies from high school. I get to be around my parents and my family, just everybody who supported me along the way. It's all come full circle, and (it's) super, super special." The Twins have not announced a starter and plan to go with a bullpen game on Sunday. One pitcher who figures to receive a good amount of work is rookie right-hander Travis Adams, who is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in three relief appearances. Adams has allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out six over nine innings. He never has faced the Nationals.

Valkyries hope to end modest skid vs. Paige Bueckers, Wings

The Golden State Valkyries aim to pull out of a three-game losing skid that sent them into the WNBA All-Star break when they welcome the Dallas Wings to San Francisco on Friday. HT Image Golden State (10-12) fell to ninth place in the league standings and out of the playoff picture for now. The Valkyries dropped back-to-back one-possession heartbreakers at Las Vegas (104-102) and vs. Phoenix (78-77). In their most recent outing, July 16 at Seattle, the Valkyries scored a franchise-low 58 points in a nine-point loss to the Storm. Despite the slump, which has Golden State a half-game behind Washington for the eighth and final playoff spot, Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton told ESPN that the first-year franchise has "surpassed" what the team set out to do. "I thought it was going to take us a little more time to get to know each other, to get to know the system," Thornton said. The latest blow to Golden State involves Thornton, who underwent season-ending knee surgery on Friday. Thornton was injured during practice earlier this week. Thornton leads Golden State with career-best averages of 14.0 points and seven rebounds per game. She is also one of three Valkyrie players averaging more than a steal per game, along with Veronica Burton and Temi Fagbenle, contributing to Golden State's defensive yield of 78 points per contest. Only league-leading Minnesota has been stingier, holding opponents to 74.7 points an outing. But the Valkyries rank near the bottom of the league in offense at 79.1 points per game, contributing to their ups and downs -- with the downs including an 80-71 loss the last time they faced Dallas. The Wings (7-17), ahead of only Connecticut in the league standings, have had a trying season thus far. However, their June 17 home win over Golden State ended a seven-game losing streak and kicked off a current stretch of .500 basketball. Dallas is 6-6 since that meeting, including an 87-63 blowout of Seattle on Tuesday in the Wings' return from the All-Star break. Arike Ogunbowale scored 20 points in the win, bumping her season average to 15.9 points per game. She scored 19 in Dallas' defeat of Golden State. Rookie Paige Bueckers, fresh off her first All-Star Game appearance, scored 20 last time out vs. Golden State, part of a sensational start to the No. 1 overall pick's career that reached a new milestone on Tuesday. With her 14 points and six assists at Seattle, Bueckers matched Caitlin Clark for the fastest to 300 career points and 100 career assists. She's also scored in double figures in all 19 games she's played. "It's all a credit to them and how we continue to play team basketball," Bueckers said. "Not one of us are going to go out of the rhythm and hunt our own shots and chase our own points and make sure our stats our great. When we play team basketball like that, things will end the way they're supposed to." --Field Level Media

Can Zeev Buium become the Minnesota Wild's breakout star this season?

Photo byWhen training camp opens in September, all eyes will be on Zeev Buium. The 19-year-old defenseman, drafted 12th overall by the Minnesota Wild in 2024, isn't looking for a slow introduction to the NHL. He's planning to step in and make an impact right away. 'I do think that there is an opportunity for me to step in and be a player on the team,' Buium said recently. 'And for me, I don't just want to be a guy who's out there—I want to help this team win.' From college dominance to NHL playoff debut: Zeev Buium's rise to stardom Zeev Buium signed his three-year entry-level contract on April 13, just three days after the University of Denver's Frozen Four elimination. One week later, on April 20, he made his NHL debut in Game 1 of Minnesota's first-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights, logging 13:27 of ice time in a 4-2 loss. He appeared in four playoff games and recorded one assist, giving him an early taste of the league's intensity. 'Being able to play in those couple games at the end of the year and then going to World Championships [with the United States] really helped me,' Buium said. 'You learn a lot… how guys carry themselves and what you need to do.' Before signing with Minnesota, Buium had a remarkable college season. He put up 48 points (13 goals, 35 assists) in 41 games for Denver, earning NCHC Player of the Year and Best Offensive Defenseman honors, while finishing as a Hobey Baker finalist. He was also a unanimous NCHC First-Team All-Star selection. The California native isn't short on championship experience either. He helped Denver win the 2024 NCAA title and was part of the U.S. teams that claimed gold at both the 2025 World Juniors and the IIHF World Championship—the latter breaking a 92-year drought for Team USA. 'There'll always be enough room [for more trophies],' Buium joked. 'The group of guys we had was so special… everyone's so great and cares about each other. ' Zeev Buium's offseason grind and Bill Guerin 's blueprint for a breakout rookie year Now, Buium is focused on adding strength and explosiveness to his 6-foot, 183-pound frame before camp. 'I think for me, it's putting on weight,' he said. 'Working on explosiveness, getting faster and stronger… get ready to play a full NHL season.' Wild GM Bill Guerin believes he's on the right track. 'Zeev is a young guy that we've all seen what he's capable of,' Guerin said. 'He's one of those young pieces of talent we're very excited to see make a push and have an impact on the team.' After a year packed with milestones and championships, Buium's hunger to succeed at the NHL level has only grown. 'Losing in the Frozen Four put into perspective how hard it is,' he said. 'It makes me more grateful… and realize how much more I want it.'
