Azizul Haque (1942-2025): He was the face of 1970s Naxalbari movement, believed in ‘power grows out of gun barrel'

Indian Express3 days ago
Veteran Naxalite leader and one of the faces of the 1970s Naxalbari movement, Azizul Haque, passed away on Monday. He was 83.
Haque, who had been suffering from ailments related to old age, was admitted to a private hospital in Salt Lake after a fall at home left him with a fractured hand. He passed away around 2:30 pm, sources said.
Expressing her condolences, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee on her 'X' handle said, ' 'I express my deep condolences on the passing of veteran politician Azizul Haque. Azizul Haque was a militant, struggling leader. He never bowed his head in his long political career. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family and associates.'
A poet, political thinker and once the head of the CPI(ML)'s second central committee, Azizul Haque was born in 1942 in Ranmahal village in Howrah. Born to a huge zamindari family, Haque gave up his share of the land as a show of his political ideology.
He arrived in Kolkata to study under the guidance of Nandgopal Bhattacharya. While studying with Nandgopal, Azizul met the communist leader Vishwanath Mukhopadhyay, which led to his involvement in the leftist movement.
Azizul belonged to the generation of Naxal leaders who believed that 'Bonduker nol-i, khomotar utsa' ( Political power grows out of the barrel of the gun) a concept was popularised by their ideological mentor, Charu Mazumdar, in India during the sixties and seventies.
At just 17 years old, Azizul joined the undivided Communist Party. He got injured while participating in the food movement procession. Although Jyoti Basu became closely associated with the mass movement, Azizul opposed Basu's political stance and accepted Charu Mazumdar as his leader.
A close associate of Charu Mazumdar and Kanai Chatterjee, Haque was a key figure in sustaining the Naxalbari uprising long after it was suppressed. Expelled from CPI(M) for endorsing Mazumdar's radical views, he co-founded the CPI(ML)'s Second Central Committee with Nishith Bhattacharya after the latter's death. Together, they attempted to establish parallel revolutionary governments in rural Bengal and Bihar during the late 1970s, but were expelled following a ceasefire with the West Bengal government.
First arrested in the Parvathipuram conspiracy case in 1970, Haque spent nearly two decades in prison, with his re-arrest in 1982 prompting outrage even within the ruling Left Front, leading to calls for his parole from jail ministers. His book Karagare Atharo Bochor (Eighteen Years in Jail) is a poignant account of the Naxalite movement and ideological perseverance. While his later writings, such as 'Naxalbari: Tirish Bochor Aage ebong Pare', ( Naxalbari: 30 years before and after) continued to critique establishment thinking.
Notably, he supported the CPI(M)'s industrialisation drive in Singur in 2006, distancing himself from many of his former comrades who opposed land acquisition. 'Leftism is to walk against the current,' he often said, and till the end, his pen remained active-contributing columns and essays to leading dailies and journals, always with a streak of rebellion.

Bangladesh: Former chief justice Khairul Haque detained in sedition, forgery cases

Bangladesh's former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque was detained here on Thursday in connection with three criminal cases including a sedition charge. read more Bangladesh's former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque was taken into custody on Thursday in connection with three criminal cases including one involving sedition, according to officials. Haque, who held the position of the country's 19th chief justice between 2010 and 2011, is widely known for delivering key judgments including the 2011 decision that deemed the nation's nonpartisan caretaker government system unconstitutional. The 81-year-old was detained from his residence in Dhaka's Dhanmondi neighbourhood by officers from the detective branch, Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Talebur Rahman told the media. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Haque faces charges in three separate cases. Legal proceedings are in motion,' Rahman stated, adding that he is expected to be formally shown as arrested in at least one of the cases before being presented in court. The cases against him were filed by different lawyers in August 2024, shortly after the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government was ousted in a violent street movement led by the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) on August 5. At the time, Haque was serving as the chairman of the Law Commission, a post he resigned from on August 13. The first case, filed in Dhaka, accused him of fraud and forgery in allegedly altering the judgment annulling the 13th constitutional amendment related to the caretaker system. A week later an identical case was filed against him in river port town of Narayanganj, on the outskirts of the capital, over the same issue and in the same month, another case was filed in Dhaka by another lawyer over his alleged corrupt practices, illegal and fraudulent judgments. Haque had authored the lead judgment that declared the caretaker government system in 2011 as 'illegal,' calling the system contrary to the spirit of the constitution. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The initial verdict, however, suggested the next two subsequent elections could be held under caretaker governments while a number of leading Bangladeshi jurists strongly argued for retaining the system for the sake of the country's nascent democracy. The verdict passed narrowly, with three of the seven apex court judges dissenting and three concurring, leaving Haque with the casting vote. Legal experts and political commentators later criticised the ruling, arguing that it undermined democratic safeguards and paved the way for Hasina to retain power without a neutral electoral mechanism. Several analysts said the verdict gave Hasina a political weapon to cling to power as the end of the caretaker system meant an end to the mechanism of checks and balances, which ensured free and fair elections in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008. CPI protests over L. Murugan's remarks on ST status for Malayali community in Erode

Condemning Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan's recent remarks on Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Malayali Gounder community, the Communist Party of India (CPI) held a demonstration in the Kadambur Hills on Thursday (July 24, 2025). The protest was led by CPI district committee member K. Ramasamy, with North district secretary S. Mohan Kumar and others joining in. They criticised Mr. Murugan's claim that the Tamil Nadu government had failed to pass a legislative resolution— a prerequisite, he asserted, for granting ST status. Protesters pointed out that while Malayali people across Tamil Nadu have been recognised as STs and issued certificates, those in Bargur and Kadambur Hills remain classified under 'Others.' As a result, they are denied access to ST-specific benefits in education, employment, and welfare schemes. The community has been seeking ST status for over five decades. Tiruppur MP K. Subbarayan has raised the issue multiple times in Parliament. In response, the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs stated that a recommendation from the State government was required. The State has since submitted the proposal, which is currently under review by the Centre. The CPI urged the Centre to introduce and pass the necessary legal amendment during the ongoing Parliament session to grant ST status to Malayalis in Erode district without further delay. The party slammed Mr. Murugan's claim regarding the need for a State Assembly resolution, calling it a diversionary tactic aimed at delaying the process and shifting blame onto the State government. They noted that neither Parliamentary discussions nor official communications from the Union Ministry had ever cited such a requirement. Mr. Murugan's remarks, they said, were misleading and served only to deflect attention from the Centre's responsibility.

Chhattisgarh: 25 Maoists including top SZCM surrender in Bijapur with collective bounties worth Rs 1.15 cr

RAIPUR: In a major blow to the CPI (Maoists), 25 hardcore cadres, including a top State Zonal Committee Member (SZCM) carrying a bounty of Rs 25 lakh, surrendered before senior police and paramilitary officials in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh's Bastar region on Thursday. The total bounty on the surrendered Maoists amounts to Rs 1.15 crore. The surrender was facilitated under the Chhattisgarh government's revised surrender and rehabilitation policy and senior police officials briefing the press said that it marks a turning point in the state's sustained counter-insurgency efforts, particularly in deep forested zones like Bijapur, where new security camps and road infrastructure have begun reaching previously untouched areas. The highest-ranking surrender was Ramanna Irpa alias Jagdish alias Vikesh, a 37-year-old SZCM and commander-in-chief of Company number 8, who was active since 2002 and carried a Rs 25 lakh bounty. He was strategist behind multiple high-profile ambushes on security forces in Odisha and Chhattisgarh and his job was to oversee arms supply, jungle warfare training camps, and inter-state coordination. Police said that as per the records, he was active since 2002 and was considered the 'nerve center' of CPI (Maoist) operations in Odisha's southern corridor and had been operating in the 'Red Triangle' between Malkangiri, Sukma, and Bijapur. Another cadre Sukku Kalmu alias Vinod Karma on the rank of Divisional Committee Member (DVCM) operated in National Park Area Committee and led Maoist student fronts. He carried Rs 8 lakh bounty and was active since1999. He was known for radicalizing tribal youth through front organizations and leading armed protests. Played a key role in enforcing Maoist rule in the Abujhmarh forest belt. Police officials, including Bastar Range IG P Sundarraj, Dantewada DIG Kamalochan Kashyap, and Bijapur SP Jitendra Kumar Yadav, along with CRPF, CoBRA and DRG were present during the formal surrender. SP Yadav said, 'This is a significant dent in the Maoist leadership hierarchy. The surrender of an SZCM shows the ideological and operational breakdown within the outfit.' In statements made during the debriefing, many Maoists cited internal dissent, exploitation within the outfit, and disillusionment with extremist ideology as major reasons for quitting. Several cadres mentioned their desire to 'rejoin the mainstream' and live peaceful lives with their families. SP Jitendra Yadav urged remaining Maoist operatives to abandon violence and take advantage of the government's rehabilitation scheme. 'The door to peaceful and dignified life is wide open. Your families want you back. Leave the false promises of outside elements behind,' he appealed. Since January 2025, Bijapur district has witnessed intensified anti-Maoist operations, resulting in significant setbacks for the insurgent network. Over this period, 242 Maoists have surrendered, choosing to join the mainstream under the state's rehabilitation policy. In addition, 300 cadres have been arrested, and 127 Maoists have been killed in various encounters across the region.
