Ferrari wins 2025 Le Mans 24 Hour with Robert Kubica
Kubica, a Polish driver whose F1 career was cut short by a tragic accident, held off a fast-charging Porsche to take a famous victory.
He lifted the winner's trophy with his left hand – because his right arm has little strength after it was partially severed in a 2011 crash.
Kubica had a Ferrari F1 driver's contract in his pocket – metaphorically, at least – when he crashed out of a rally in Andorra. A roadside barrier sliced through his car, destroying the racer's right arm.
British television host Jeremy Clarkson told viewers of The Grand Tour that Kubica 'broke every single bone on the right side of his body, had a 17 hour operation to put his arm back on again, and then 17 more operations after that, and his arm still doesn't work properly'.
Kubica made it back to F1 but never got his chance with Ferrari.
Until the brand signed him to drive its third car at Le Mans.
This year, Kubica and co-drivers Philip Hanson and Ye Yifei beat the odds to win the world's most prestigious race in front of more than 300,000 spectators.
After winning Le Mans, Kubica told reporters he was 'very lucky' to be able to drive after his near-fatal crash that left his right arm in a withered state.

'It took me quite a few years, not only to recover physically but also mentally,' he said.
'What happened happened and I have to accept it. One of the worst periods of my life was when my mind wouldn't accept the fact that my arm was failing.'

Motorsport outlets such as The Race described Kubica's crash and subsequent Le Mans victory as 'one of the most remarkable stories in motorsport history'.
Fans posted on X that he was 'the ultimate hero', that Hollywood needs to 'make a movie' about Kubica's life story, and that they watched the final minutes of Le Mans through teary eyes.

Kubica was chased to the line by the Porsche of Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor and Australia's own Matt Campbell.
Campbell passed two Ferraris late in the race to secure second place, handing over to co-driver Kevin Estre who closed the gap to Kubica, but could not get close enough to pass. Campbell told Racer.com that 'we ran a perfect race today, with no mistakes, so we've got to be proud of what we achieved'.
'We gave it everything,' he said.
Le Mans is exploding in popularity for manufacturers looking to take on endurance racing. Ford, McLaren and Genesis have announced plans to join the race in the next couple of years,a dding to a grid that already includes Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Cadillac, Aston Martin, Peugeot and Alpine.
Australian fans cheered on young racer Cameron McLeod in support races in the lead-up to the race. McLeod won Ford's Mustang Challenge races from pole position, taking the chequered flag ahead of Ford competitors from around the globe.

'Justin Timberlake really thought he could do the bare minimum and get away with it?' raged the fan. 'People didn't drop $500 to watch a lifeless karaoke act. No energy. No vocals.' A crew member who has worked extensively with the singer confirmed to The U.S. Sun that he is 'p****ed off about everything' and that he's 'totally unengaged.' 'I've worked with him on multiple tours, and I've never seen him like this — so selfish, so checked out,' said the tour veteran. 'He barely sings during shows, just floats through it. Fans are noticing, and they're angry. We've had hundreds of people say they felt betrayed after buying tickets and getting half a show. 'It's been embarrassing, honestly. A comedian has made startling new claims about Ellen DeGeneres' alleged behaviour behind the scenes of her now-cancelled talk show. Adam Carolla appeared on conservative commentator Emily Jashinsky's podcast After Party on July 30, where he was asked his thoughts on the star's recent move to the UK after Donald Trump's presidential win. The former Man Show host said that he believed the likes of DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell moved across the pond as Trump's win last November 'triggered the unravelling of very talented people'. But Carolla claimed that DeGeneres has always been a 'mean person', so said it came as a surprise to him that she is now speaking about the 'grave injustice' – as host Jashinsky described it – happening in the US under Trump's new immigration policy. Carolla then shared an anecdote of the two occasions he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where was met by staff who were 'scared to death' of the talk show host. 'I knew they were scared because it's like, I was just sitting in my dressing room and their segment producer came in, and he went, 'All right, so we went over all the stuff we're going to talk about.' You know, Christmas vacation or whatever it was. And I go, 'Yeah, yeah,'' he recalled on the podcast. At the time, DeGeneres was a staunch vegan and so the producer wanted to avoid certain topics on air during the 2012 taping. '[The producer] goes, 'You're not going to talk about meat or beef or anything like that, right?' And I go, 'No, I'm not. I'm just going to talk about the stuff we talked about – going on vacation at Christmas or the kids or you know, their anecdotes.'' But Carolla claims the producer returned to the room to again drill into him that meat products were not to be discussed. 'He came back like 20 minutes later right before I went out, and he's like, 'OK, but don't talk about beef or meat or any[thing],'' he recalled. 'I was like, 'Oh, this guy's scared to death.'' Carolla then shared a conversation he had with another staffer who labelled DeGeneres the 'worst person'. 'Later on, I talked to someone who signed an NDA, so I won't say his name, but he wrote for Ellen,' Carolla shared. 'I just went, 'How's Ellen?' And he said, 'Worst person, worst person. Not worst person I've worked for. Worst person I've ever met.'' DeGeneres' reputation first took a hit in 2020, after several anonymous The Ellen DeGeneres Show employees came forward with allegations of racism, sexual misconduct, and hostility behind the scenes in a BuzzFeed exposé. Her show subsequently came to an end in 2022 after 19 seasons, with the star officially calling it quits. 'I want you to know I thought about this decision for a long time,' DeGeneres said on the show at the time. 'I meditated on it, I talked to [wife] Portia, I talked to myself … The point is, I need to take a break from talking. I always trust my instincts, and my instincts told me it's time.' DeGeneres said her reasoning for quitting was because it was 'just not a challenge anymore'. 'When you're a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged. And as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it's just not a challenge anymore,' she said.

Piastri back where his grand prix winning habit started
Oscar Piastri has got used to winning since his maiden success in Hungary last year. He now returns to the scene of those happy moments as Formula One leader, seeking to take a tidy advantage over McLaren teammate Lando Norris into the August break. The 24-year-old has won six of 13 grands prix so far this season, already more than any Australian driver has ever managed in a single year, and leads his British rival by 16 points with 11 races remaining. "I'm really excited to go back. It's always a fun weekend. It's a great city, a cool track as well," said Piastri after winning a rain-delayed race in Belgium last Sunday in McLaren's sixth one-two of the season. It ended a resurgent run by Norris, who had closed the gap at the top by winning the previous two races. "I'm sure it will be nice to go back to where I had my first win. But as soon as we get on track, you forget about that immediately." Hungary, hot and twisty and with a layout more like an overgrown go-kart track that makes overtaking tricky, puts a premium on qualifying. Norris took pole last time in Hungary but lost out to Piastri at the start, recovered the lead when the Australian suffered a slower pitstop and was then ordered by the team to hand back the place. The Briton eventually complied but it rankled at the time and he will be looking to win on Sunday without any such controversy. With McLaren dominant, and historically the most successful team in Hungary, the stage is set for another duel between the teammates. Who chases them hardest remains an open question but this could be the moment Lewis Hamilton has been waiting for with Ferrari, while teammate Charles Leclerc has had five podiums already this season. Four-times world champion Max Verstappen, winner in Hungary in 2022 and 2023, will be starting his 200th race for Red Bull. The race is the 40th Hungarian Grand Prix and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who took his first win at the circuit with Renault in 2003, has raced in more than half of them - this being his record 22nd.
