
Chelsea, Somerville sue Trump administration for "politicized attack" on sanctuary cities
"Unless we storm the local sandwich shops they say they'll take away our federal funds, funds that we pay taxes for, no matter who it hurts in our community," said Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne at a news conference.
Both cities are being represented by Lawyers for Civil Rights.
"The Massachusetts cities of Chelsea and Somerville bring this action to prevent the federal Executive Branch from defunding their police forces and other essential public safety functions as part of a politicized attack on 'sanctuary jurisdictions,'" lawyers said in the complaint.
The cities stand to lose tens of millions of dollars if the Trump administration follows through on threats to withhold funding from sanctuary cities.
"President Trump and his agencies have said in no uncertain terms that he plans to strip federal funding from sanctuary cities," said Oren Sellstrom, the Litigation Director for Lawyers for Civil Rights.
Trump border czar targets Boston
The lawsuit comes days after President Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, had some harsh words for Boston and the city's police commissioner, Michael Cox, at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
"The police commissioner of Boston, you said you'd double down on not helping the law enforcement offices of ICE. I'm coming to Boston, I'm bringing hell with me," Homan said, prompting applause from the crowd. "You're not a police commissioner. Take that badge off your chest, put it in your desk drawer. Because you became a politician. You forgot what it's like to be a cop."
Mayor Wu defends police commissioner
Mayor Michelle Wu came to her commissioner's defense saying, "It's pretty clueless for someone to be insulting our police commissioner, whose decades of experience, whose leadership in the role and whose results with our amazing police department speak for themselves."
Regardless of rhetoric, Massachusetts law prevents local police officers from arresting or detaining people based solely on their immigration status.
Former Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations for ICE Boston, Bruce Foucart, says that law has undoubtedly made arrests more difficult and less safe for federal immigration officers.
"Why preclude law enforcement from cooperating with each other is beyond me. It's like asking the feds, it's like asking the state and locals to do this job with one hand tied behind their backs," Foucart said.

As President Donald Trump shows off his golf courses for Britain's leader, crisis in Gaza looms
EDINBURGH, Scotland — President Donald Trump once suggested his golf course in Scotland 'furthers' the U.S.-U.K. relationship. Now he's getting the chance to prove it. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is meeting Monday with Trump at a golf property owned by the president's family near Turnberry in southwestern Scotland — then later traveling to Abderdeen, on the country's northeast coast, where there's another Trump golf course and a third is opening soon. During his first term in 2019, Trump posted of his Turnberry property, 'Very proud of perhaps the greatest golf course anywhere in the world. Also, furthers U.K. relationship!' Starmer is not a golfer, but toggling between Trump's Scottish courses shows the outsized influence the president puts on properties bearing his name — and on golf's ability to shape geopolitics. However, even as Trump may want to focus on showing off his golf properties, Starmer will try to center the conversation on more urgent global matters. He plans to urge Trump to press Israel to allow more aid into Gaza and attempt to end what Downing St. called 'the unspeakable suffering and starvation' in the territory, while pushing for a ceasefire in Israel's war with Hamas. Britain, along with France and Germany, has criticized Israel for 'withholding essential humanitarian assistance' as hunger spread in Gaza. Over the weekend, Starmer said Britain will take part in efforts led by Jordan to airdrop aid after Israel temporarily eased restrictions. But British Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds acknowledged Monday that only the U.S. has 'the leverage' to make a real difference in the conflict. Still, asked about the crisis in Gaza on Sunday night, Trump was largely dismissive — focused more on how he's not personally gotten credit for previous attempts to provide food aid. 'It's terrible. You really at least want to have somebody say, 'Thank you,'' Trump said. The president added, 'It makes you feel a little bad when you do that' without what he considered proper acknowledgement. Starmer is under pressure from his Labour Party lawmakers to follow France in recognizing a Palestinian state, a move both Israel and the U.S. have condemned. The British leader says the U.K. supports statehood for the Palestinians but that it must be 'part of a wider plan' for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Israeli strikes kill at least 36 people in Gaza, officials say, as some aid restrictions are easedAlso on Monday's agenda, according to Starmer's office, are efforts to promote a possible peace deal to end fighting in Russia's war with Ukraine — particularly efforts at forcing Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table in the next 50 days. Trump in the past sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for also failing to express enough public gratitude toward U.S. support for his country, taking a similar tack he's now adopting when it comes to aid for Gaza. The president, though, has shifted away from that tone and more sharply criticized Putin and Russia in recent weeks. On Tuesday, Trump will be at the site of his new course near Aberdeen for an official ribbon-cutting. It opens to the public on Aug. 13 and tee times are already for sale — with the course betting that a presidential visit can help boost sales. What to expect, and what not to, at the UN meeting on an Israel-Palestinian two-state solutionProtesters have planned a demonstration in Balmedie, near Trump's existing Aberdeen golf course, after demonstrators took to the streets across Scotland on Saturday to decry the president's visit while he was golfing. Starmer and Trump are likely to find more common ground on trade issues. While China initially responded to Trump's tariff threats by retaliating with high import taxes of its own on U.S. goods, it has since begun negotiating to ease trade tensions. Starmer and his country have taken a far softer approach. He's gone out of his way to work with Trump, flattering the president repeatedly during a February visit to the White House, and teaming up to announce a joint trade framework on tariffs for some key products in May. Starmer and Trump then signed a trade agreement during the G7 summit in Canada that freed the U.K.'s aerospace sector from U.S. tariffs and used quotas to reduce them on auto-related industries from 25% to 10% while increasing the amount of U.S. beef it pledged to import. Discussions with Starmer follow a Trump meeting Sunday with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry course. They announced a trade framework that will put 15% tariffs on most goods from both countries, though many major details remain pending. The president has for months railed against yawning U.S. trade deficits around the globe and sees tariffs as a way to try and close them in a hurry. But the U.S. ran an $11.4 billion trade surplus with Britain last year, meaning it exported more to the U.K. than it imported. Census Bureau figures this year indicate that the surplus could grow. There are still lingering U.S.-Britain trade issues that need fine-tuning. The deal framework from May said British steel would enter the U.S. duty-free, but it continues to face a 25% levy. U.K. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said Monday that 'negotiations have been going on on a daily basis' and 'there's a few issues to push a little bit further today,' though he downplayed expectations of a resolution. The leader of Scotland, meanwhile, said he will urge Trump to lift the current 10% tariff on Scotch whisky. First Minister John Swinney said the spirit's 'uniqueness' justified an exemption. Even as some trade details linger and both leaders grapple with increasingly difficult choices in Gaza and Ukraine, however, Starmer's staying on Trump's good side appears to be working — at least so far. 'The U.K. is very well-protected. You know why? Because I like them — that's their ultimate protection,' Trump said during the G7.

Congress should eliminate all energy subsidies, not just for renewables
Congress voted to pass a massive budget package that, among other things, drastically cuts clean energy tax credits to reduce federal spending. Claiming victory, President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law on July 4. Indeed, taxpayer dollars subsidizing any special industry can play havoc with the intelligence and efficiency of the free market system. That said, the obvious question is this: Why only the renewable subsidies? Why were fossil fuel subsidies not also eliminated? Lowering the tax burden from fossil fuel subsidies would have offered substantial savings to our federal budget. The U.S. government funnels $10 billion to $15 billion per year to the industry through tax breaks, direct spending (federal programs and infrastructure support), and below-market leases on public lands. Such preferential treatment is sometimes called 'corporate welfare.' Taxpayers actually pay twice for these subsidies, because we also foot the bill for rising costs of localized pollution and climate impacts resulting from increased greenhouse emissions. These federal subsidies benefit profitable oil, gas, and coal companies at taxpayer expense. But instead, the budget bill added a new stack of subsidies for the oil and gas industry. For example, it rolled back royalty fees for extraction on public lands to 1920 rates. It added a new tax credit for intangible drilling and development costs. It increased the value of existing tax credits for use of carbon dioxide to boost extraction. It stalled implementation of a pollution fee on wasted methane flared or vented from oil wells. It also added noncompetitive leasing rules that can offer energy companies bargain-basement prices. The bill also gave the coal industry new subsidies, slashing royalty payments on public lands from 12.5 percent to a maximum of 7 percent for all existing and future leases. There is also a new 2.5 percent tax break for extraction of metallurgic coal, which is hard to justify from an 'America First' perspective. Almost all metallurgic coal mined in the U.S., after all, is exported, primarily to China and India, where it is used to manufacture carbon-intensive steel that out-competes cleaner U.S. steel on the global market. Pollution reduction results in healthier communities and fewer health and disaster costs. There is a fundamental contradiction in providing financial support to companies that are not held financially responsible for the damaging consequences of what they produce, even while eliminating support for clean energy sources like solar and wind. A case can be made that all energy subsidies — whether for fossil fuels, nuclear, or renewables—should be eliminated in the U.S. to create a truly competitive, transparent, and market-driven energy sector. Subsidies distort pricing, shield inefficient technologies from natural market pressures, and lead to inefficient allocation of public funds. While initially helpful in developing emerging industries, long-term subsidies can lock in political favoritism, suppress innovation, and over-burden taxpayers. Removal of subsidies forces energy producers to compete on a level playing field, where cost, efficiency, and sustainability — not government handouts — determine success. This approach would not only save billions in federal spending but also encourage more cost-effective energy solutions driven by actual demand and performance. Uneven standards, where government energy subsidies are granted to some, such as fossil fuels, and not to others, such as clean energy, result in higher energy costs for consumers. If we stop subsidizing America's richest energy companies and oldest industries, we could lower the deficit without cutting essential services and free up more funds for public investment. We need smarter policy that results in fairer energy markets and global energy leadership. Eliminating subsidies is often economically rational but politically difficult, but our individual action can play a meaningful role in shifting political momentum, especially when it is sustained and collective. Congress can still, and should, phase out all energy subsidies, not just the current clean energy cuts.
