Flying in the new age of conflict – the hotspots diverting flights and leaving pilots blind

The first indication that something was wrong came when the clock on the flight deck began to go backwards. The aircraft was cruising thousands of metres above Israel and as the crew noticed the error, they checked their GPS signal. The plane's internal instruments showed it was flying at just 1,500ft, well below the cruising altitude of 38,000ft it should have been at.
Seconds later, alarms began to sound and lights flashed throughout the cockpit.
'Our terrain avoidance system sprang into action, warning us that we were heading for a collision with the mountainous terrain,' the plane's pilot says. Over years of flying, it had been drilled into the crew to pull back on the controls when such an alarm sounded, but on this occasion the pilot took no action.
The crew were prepared for their system to make 'spurious' warnings and knew from experience they were still flying at a safe altitude.
The pilot involved – who works on long-haul routes for a UK airline – said they had experienced GPS spoofing, one in a catalogue of growing risks facing airlines as they traverse a world in which warfare has become newly normalised amid a fracturing of global diplomacy.
Speaking to the Guardian on condition of anonymity, the pilot called the incident last year unsettling, but stressed the flight was never at risk. However, they expressed concern that such an event only makes pilots more desensitised to the internal systems they have relied upon for decades.
'You are meant to feel uncomfortable in your inaction and that is exactly how I felt.'
Since Russia's fullscale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the world has seen a surge in state-based conflicts. By some measures, the proportion of the world engulfed by warfare has grown 65% since 2021– an area equivalent to nearly double the size of India – with new and reemerging hotspots in Ukraine, the Middle East, Myanmar and central Africa.
As the paths through safe airspace distort and narrow, airlines have been forced to divert flights around conflict zones and geopolitical hotspots, while cancelling some routes altogether.
Most western airlines are now banned from flying over Russia, forcing them to fly longer routes, extending flight times and pushing up costs. As a result, last year British Airways and Virgin Atlantic axed their direct flights between London and Beijing.
For other airlines, diverting routes through the Middle East to avoid Russian airspace only supplanted the risks, as conflict spreads across the region and pilots find themselves sharing the skies with barrages of drones and missiles – some of which have reportedly come close enough to be seen by pilots and passengers.
Sudden outbreaks of conflict – as seen earlier this month when tensions between Israel and Iran erupted into open warfare – have forced airlines to respond rapidly. On Monday, as Iran launched a retaliatory barrage of missiles at a US base in Qatar, two dozen flights were forced to divert away from one of the world's busiest hubs, between Dubai and Doha.
The incident demonstrated how the effects of unexpected strikes and airspace closures can reverberate across the world: Qantas was forced to divert two flights in mid-air, while Air India said it would suspend all flights to eastern North America and Europe due to the increasingly narrow path between those destinations and the Indian subcontinent. Hundreds more flights were cancelled altogether.
The re-routings are placing a bigger burden on airlines' bottom lines – and on the environment.
As one example, flights between Helsinki and Tokyo now take up to three and a half hours longer than before the war in Ukraine began, says Viktoriia Ivannikova, assistant professor in aviation management at Dublin City University.
'If you have longer flight trajectories, we will have more fuel consumptions and more CO2 emissions.'
Her research has found that on certain routes between Europe and Asia, costs have risen by between 19% and 39%, while emissions have increased by between 18% and 40%.
Ivannikova also points to the increased risk of a plane being hit by missiles and drones. In 2014, the downing of Malaysian airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine was an early example of this new threat. Intercepted communications between pro-Russian separatists made it clear that they initially believed they had hit a military plane, not a civilian liner.
Ivannikova also points to the example of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight which crashed in Kazakhstan in December, killing 38 people. That plane was accidentally shot down by Russian air defences, according to Azerbaijan's president.
Even away from active conflict zones, risks abound, as nations push the boundaries of diplomatic norms.
In February, planes flying between Australia and New Zealand were diverted while China conducted live firing drills in the Tasman Sea. The exercises performed by the three naval ships only came to light because the warships were broadcasting a notification alert on a channel not monitored by air traffic control, but which was picked up by a Virgin Australia pilot.
'As long as I've been flying there's always been a war going on somewhere,' says Mike Thrower, a retired British Airways pilot and flight safety rep for the British Airline Pilots' Association trade union. He says the airlines 'have become very good at flight planning around those areas'.
As conflicts have expanded and usable airspace shrunk, pilots have seen an explosion in another deeply worrying trend: GPS spoofing.
Spoofing involves radio transmitters overriding GPS signals to send a false location to planes. International flight experts at Ops Group recorded a 500% increase in spoofing in 2024, affecting an average of 1,500 flights per day.
It's mostly concentrated around conflict zones, where opposing forces will broadcast incorrect position to confuse incoming drones and missiles. Ops Group have identified the most prevalent locations as being the eastern Mediterranean, near Israel, Lebanon and Egypt, as well as the Black Sea, western Russia and the India-Pakistan border.
'I would say it is not dangerous in its own right,' says the pilot of the flight that was spoofed over Israel, 'but its prevalence is having an adverse effect on safety.'
'It just adds to the workload,' says Thrower, who is concerned that many in the industry are getting used to ignoring the planes inbuilt warning systems, as they are so often being interfered with. He calls it the 'normalisation of deviance'.
'If half of you is thinking, 'I don't think this is really a real warning, we'll just press on,' it introduces a level of degradation to the safety of the operation room.'
GPS is interwoven into many systems within an aircraft and Thrower warns that the knock-on effects from spoofing are also of concern to many pilots.
'These aircraft systems are so interconnected now with the nav system feeding into various other parts of the system … There have been instances where other systems have locked up as a result of the GPS interference,' he says.
In its 2024 report, Ops Group says the high dependency on GPS 'creates a chain of complexity that makes safety and risk assessment challenging.' It notes that false alerts are now routine and crews are getting used to seeing on-board clocks run backwards due to spoofing.
Thrower notes that pilots are trained to deal with such issues and are quick to spot spoofing when it occurs. In its survey of pilots, Ops Group says that the vast majority are confident in dealing with spoofing and report that managing the issues has little to no effect on the comfort of passengers.
The pilot whose flight was spoofed over Israel says they feel that flying is as safe as it was four years ago, but the weight of responsibility is burdening crew with a whole new catalogue of procedures that they have to keep in mind.
'We are human and when you are flying at 34,000ft over an area that has been deemed safe above 33,000ft, it is hard to completely detach yourself from wondering if that 1,000ft buffer is really enough,' the pilot says.
'Ultimately though … it is incredibly safe and as pilots, it's our jobs to keep it that way.'

'Whew, it's like stepping off a plane in a hot country,' said a friend last weekend as she entered the corridor that leads to my flat. I commonly have to reassure guests before we've even arrived at my front door that I don't live in an actual oven. What I actually live in is a new one-bedroom flat in southeast London. It has much to recommend it, not least its energy efficiency. My flat is so well-insulated that I haven't turned the heating on since I moved in seven years ago, saving me thousands of pounds in energy bills. There's just one sweltering downside: summer. The flats were not built with summer in mind, particularly not the kind of 25C-30C days that we're sweating our way through. • Best tips on how to sleep in the heat Millions of us are in the same boat. Ask anyone who lives in a house or flat built in the past 20 years and they will tell you that between June and August, they may as well live on Mercury. Through a combination of building regulations, net-zero goals and property developers packing in as many flats as they can, new homes are significantly hotter and harder to ventilate than older properties. The flora is suffering. I tried to keep a basil plant this summer, for sprinkling elegantly on tomato salads, but it died in two days. Sadly it seems only succulents will survive. A stalk emerged from one of my succulents recently, which I sent proudly to a green-fingered friend. 'You must be keeping it in an optimal climate,' she said. I looked it up, and the plant in question is native to north Africa. I had an impromptu summit about the problem in the lift the other day, when I squeezed in alongside two clammy neighbours. 'It's never less than 30C in my flat,' one of them dead-panned. 'I think I've acclimatised and I don't feel anything any more,' the other said. (She's got a point about acclimatising — everyone else's homes feel freezing to me now.) This is all a trade-off. Most people don't believe me when I say that I've never had to turn the heating on, but it's true. In fact my flat is so well-insulated that I've never heard the newborn babies who apparently live either side of me. But with the number of days in which the temperature reaches above 28C doubling since 1990, this trade-off is becoming a rather sweaty one. Annie Moore, 33, and her partner used to own a new two-bedroom flat that overheated in the summer. This meant 'essentially not wearing many clothes, we rarely had the duvet on, and there was lots of standing in the fridge with the door open'. • Heatwaves above 40C are the future, says Met Office While most office workers were reluctant to return after Covid, Moore was desperate to be back in to take advantage of the air conditioning. Two years ago, she moved to a draughty Victorian terraced house and prefers being cooler and spending more on heating. 'We often think of the people who bought our old flat on hot days like this and feel very bad,' she says. Ventilation is another big problem with new builds. Cramming as many flats as possible into buildings means a lot of them are single aspect like mine (with windows only on one side) so it's impossible to create a through-draught of air to cool the place down. This is the reason the majority of new builds are fitted with MVHR systems (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery), in which pipes circulate air flow through the flat. This, however, does not keep you cool on the hottest days. And that wave of hot air that knocks you out in the corridors? This is down to communal heating pipework that is usually run down the centre of the building. The prevalence of glass on new buildings can also create a greenhouse effect that contributes towards the high temperatures inside. A friend who is also in her thirties, Ophelia Oakham, bought her new flat in 2017. 'By the summer of 2018, it felt like we were living in a slow-cooking oven,' she says. 'We tried everything. Fans that just blew hot air around, damp paper towels, cold flannels in front of the fan, blackout curtains kept shut all day; you name it. The building's design meant no breeze ever got in.' So what can be done to cool these furnaces down? Air conditioning is one option. But it costs. Portable units (units in more ways than one) are between £400 and £600 for a good one. Because air conditioning is so energy intensive (and expensive to install), many new blocks such as mine aren't built with it. Blocking out the morning sun is the most important remedy, especially if you're east-facing as I am. Owners of flats usually can't install external blinds, so instead I have good quality blackout curtains that I don't open until around midday when the sun is above the building, not in front. Reflective window film is a good buy too. Invest in a decent fan. I have an 18in chrome contraption in the lounge that knocks paintings off the wall on its strongest setting. In the bedroom, there's a Dreo silent tower fan that has eight speeds and a silent mode on a timer at night. I do think it's great that we're pushing for energy efficiency in our building regulations. But if we're going to build 1.5 million homes in the next five years, as the government assures us that we are, then we need to make sure they are ready for a warming climate too. • Rising humidity is making heatwaves worse In 2023, my friend Ophelia caved and moved into a Victorian house. 'These new-build flats must come with proper cooling,' she says. 'Insulation is great in winter, but in summer it's unbearable. People can't sleep, everyone's miserable, and the world is only getting hotter. I feel very passionate about this. It's not a luxury, it's a necessity.' A construction skills academy has been finished ahead of its opening later this year. The Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) at Riverside Sunderland will welcome future engineers and builders in Riverside site, a 47-acre park made up of five areas on both sides of the River Wear, is being built as part of Sunderland City Council's redevelopment of the City Council said the academy would "educate, train and upskill" students and would add to "the rich history" that the city had of people making things. The HICSA is one of several projects involved in Riverside Sunderland, including City Hall, The Beam, Keel Crossing and a new footbridge across the River Wear. The rollout of new wheelie bins and food waste caddies in the New Forest is to be monitored following reports of ponies and donkeys breaking into Forest District Council started its first phase to rollout the bins in April to residents of Brockenhurst, New Milton, Lymington and the surrounding council said it had seen cases of donkeys in the national park "interacting with waste containers" and that it would monitor the "emerging issue".Last month, livestock-owners raised concerns about animals seeing the bins as a "potential food source", which could damage their health. New Forest District Council was among the last local authorities not to use wheelie wheelie bins and caddies are replacing single-use black and clear plastic bags for residents' domestic and food waste, plus area's free-roaming ponies, pigs, donkeys and cattle are owned by commoners - people who own or occupy land with ancient rights last month's meeting of the Verderers Court which administers commoners' rights, Commoners Defence Association (CDA) chairman Andrew Parry-Norton called on the council to change its advice to residents to ensure bins were kept away from areas where livestock roam."Not only could the bins be a problem for pigs, but also donkeys and ponies who will quickly realise this could become a potential food source," he told the court. In a statement, the council said: "We have this morning seen a handful of examples of donkeys interacting with waste containers, across a collection area covering around 1,650 properties. "We are listening to our residents, and while we continue to monitor the situation, we have been working on ways to address this emerging issue."Reported incidents remained "very minimal," it also said it had already had a "helpful discussion" with the CDA and would be reviewing its findings with other bodies including Forestry England in a bid to reduce the chance of animals accessing food waste. The move to wheelie bins was given the go-ahead in 2022 with the council insisting they were needed to increase recycling rates, while opponents argued they were unsightly and costly.
