The Skoda Elroq is a great all-round EV and a worthy Car of the Year winner
Every year we seem to say the competition is hotter than ever, but that's only because it's true. In the final reckoning, there were five cars that could easily have claimed the ultimate accolade of 2025 Auto Express Car of the Year.

Our winners are – in the opinion of our test team, which has decades of experience behind it – the best in their class. But we know that in any given sector of the market, buyers have very different requirements around brand, pricing and appeal of different models. So you won't always agree with our king of the castle.
But every one of the cars across our New Car Awards extravaganza is bloomin' brilliant. From city cars to supercars, we love them all, and the conversations about the winners were always enthusiastic and animated, no matter what sort of model we were discussing. Some categories have been retained by our 2024 winners, but the car world moves fast and we have a lot of new models that have come straight in at the top of the class. As if to highlight the strength in depth across the car industry, we have no fewer than 17 different brands with their name on a winner's trophy, and 25 different marques were commended across the categories.
There are very few dominant brands; a couple collected four or five awards each, but there are particular high points in most manufacturers' model ranges, and we've picked them out, along with our choice of the sweet spot in the line-up for each of the winning cars. So enjoy our walk-through of the very best in the business, culminating in the Skoda Elroq winning our 2025 Auto Express Car of the Year. Available from $39,770, the base model wields an athletic stance complemented by an upscale interior. That combination puts it in contention with the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4, which starts at a hefty $45,095. When these two models go tire-to-tire, the Nissan Ariya offers more bang for your buck. 2025 Nissan Ariya — Source: Nissan The Nissan Ariya comes stocked with amenities Normally, base models aren't exactly the most comfortable vehicles, but Nissan has gone the extra mile with the Ariya. The entry-level Engage trim rides on 19-inch wheels that pair well with LED lighting and a slicked-back style. Heated side mirrors offer a touch of convenience, while the black grille and rear spoiler wing give off an aggressive demeanor. Inside, the base Ariya Engage makes comfort a priority, with heated front and rear seats, along with a power driver lumbar support. Leatherette-appointed seats provide an upscale look and feel, while a 12.3-inch touchscreen display takes center stage. In terms of connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless charging, and over-the-air (OTA) updates make for a hassle-free experience. 2025 Nissan Ariya — Source: Nissan At the top of the range, the Platinum+ trim with 20-inch wheels and all-wheel drive starts at $54,370. For that kind of cash, the EV comes with a power liftgate, first- and second-row moonroof, complete with a power sunshade, and LED fog lights. Illuminated door handles and heated side mirrors take the electric crossover's convenience to the next level. Inside, the EV comes equipped with heated front seats with leatherette bolsters and a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel. In terms of tech, the VW ID.4 features a 12.9-inch touchscreen display with backlit sliders, wireless charging, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Adjustable ambient lighting adds a more personal touch to the electrified crossover. 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 — Source: Volkswagen In its highest form, the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S Plus AWD starts at $57,295 and rides on athletic 21-inch alloy wheels. The top-spec trim includes a panoramic fixed glass roof, puddle lights on the side mirrors, and a heated windshield. A power rear liftgate proves to be a convenient amenity, while silver roof accents and roof rails create a stylish look. Inside, the top-spec ID.4 adds full climate-controlled, massage front seats and heated rear seats. V-Tex leatherette upholstery comes standard, and three-zone automatic climate control creates a more comfortable atmosphere. In terms of entertainment, a Harman Kardon premium audio system offers a pristine listening experience. Both EVs pack a punch At the base level, the 2025 Nissan Ariya is the typical entry-level EV, with its single motor putting out 214 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. With the smaller 63 kWh battery, the front-wheel drive Ariya offers 216 miles on a single charge. Models equipped with the smaller battery pack can charge to 80% in 35 minutes at a DC fast charger. For those with a need for speed, however, upgrading to all-wheel drive significantly improves performance and range. 2025 Nissan Ariya — Source: Nissan When equipped with dual electric motors and the larger battery pack, the Ariya packs a punch, putting out 389 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque in most iterations. The Ariya Engage AWD starts at $45,370 and serves as the exception, with 335 horsepower due to the smaller battery, which offers 205 miles of range. With the larger 87 kWh battery, the electric crossover's range peaks at 272 miles and charges to 80% in around 40 minutes at a DC fast charger. The more expensive of the two EVs, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4, features a more simplified setup. Currently, the 82 kWh battery pack is the sole option, with a smaller 62 kWh battery expected later this year. When equipped with a single electric motor powering the rear wheels, the VW ID.4 stands out with 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to dual electric motors increases the EV's price to $48,995, but it brings a more thrilling 335 horsepower and 536 lb-ft of torque while reducing range to 263 miles. Regardless of drivetrain, the VW ID.4 can charge from 10% to 80% in around 28 minutes at a DC fast charging station. 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 — Source: Volkswagen Final thoughts The 2025 Nissan Ariya taps into the competition with a full array of features comparable to more upscale competitors. With a slick style, LED lighting, and an interior designed around passenger comfort, it's a tough EV to beat, especially with a sub-$40,000 price tag. Even so, there's no doubt the Volkswagen ID.4 is a solid pick in the electric crossover segment, with its large battery and impressive performance. When it comes to value, however, the ID.4 is out of reach for many consumers due to its $45,095 base price. In the first half of 2025, overall sales for North America are up 1.6 percent compared to the same timeframe last year. BMW also states that its overall sales are 'on par' with those of 2024 for Q2. The problems start with BMW's electrified offerings, where sales are in steep decline. This drop isn't unexpected – we previously told you about BMW's pause on shipping electrified vehicles to dealerships amidst the chaos of tariffs on automakers – but it's perhaps illustrative that people are buying new cars, electrified or not. 2026 BMW iX xDr45 — Source: BMW BMW sales in 2025 – the good and the bad The first six months of 2025, compared to the first half of 2024, have been positive for BMW. Overall sales are up 1.6 percent for the BMW nameplate proper, and MINI sales are up a staggering 19 percent. In H1 2025, BMW sold 178,499 vehicles; MINI sold 14,592. BMW's sales growth for H1 2025 has been buoyed by passenger cars, where sales have improved by 11.2 percent year-over-year. 'Light Trucks,' a designation BMW uses for its SUVs, is down 5.9 percent. 'Our sales performance over the first half of the year is a clear indication that we have the right strategy, products, and dealer network to succeed,' said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America. 'We're confident in our business and look forward to building on this progress in the second half of the year, despite some challenges in the marketplace.' In Q2 2025, sales of passenger cars were up 9.7 percent, and light truck sales were down 7.7 percent. Total sales of BMWs in Q2 2025 are down 0.4 percent, which means it sold 353 fewer vehicles compared to Q2 2024. BMW EV sales are tanking, but there's a silver lining Total sales of BMW EVs for H1 2025 are down 0.7 percent, which represents 162 fewer EVs sold in H1 2025 than in H1 2024. The sharpest decline was seen with the BMW i5, a flagship sedan many hoped would help invigorate BMW's continued push into electrification. Unfortunately, BMW's i5 sales are down 30.3 percent in 2025, while its bigger sibling, the BMW i7, is down 11 percent. The BMW iX and i$ are up 3.9 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively. For Q2 2025, numbers are far worse for BMW's electrified lineup. The i4 is down 19 percent, i5 sales have dropped by a staggering 43.6 percent, i7 sales have decreased by 11.7 percent, and the iX is down 12.1 percent. Overall, BMW EV sales are down 21.2 percent in Q2 2025 compared to Q2 2024. Yikes. BMW i5 eDrive40 — Source: BMW Final thoughts MINI recently released some incredible new vehicles, so it's no surprise to see its sales jump so dramatically. It represents a mini (pun intended) portion of BMW's business, but its dedicated fan base is growing rapidly. BMW's customer base is, perhaps, ambivalent about electrification. BMW sales seem to be on a steady quarterly increase of one to two percent, so the overall sales figures are in line with the company's trendline. It's fascinating that customers seem unfazed by the lack of electrified options, which suggests that, as much as automakers want customers to be all-in on electric, they're just not.
