Reliving 16-year-old Rory McIlroy's course record 61 at Royal Portrush
His eyes lit up, he smiled broadly and invited me to sit down beside him. Who doesn't like reliving one of his best rounds, right?
'I remember every shot from that round like it was yesterday,' he said. 'It was the first time I ever played 18 holes without a bogey.'
McIlroy blitzed Royal Portrush's Dunluce Links, which dates to 1888, in a course-record 11-under 61. In many ways, it is that round on July 12, 2005, which confirmed all the hype about McIlroy was legit.
As if we needed any further confirmation that Rory's one of us, he remembered a birdie that got away – right at the first – but he missed little thereafter. Driver and 6-iron led to a two-putt birdie at the second, and he tacked on birdies at Nos. 6 and 9, where he wedged into the par-5 ninth, to turn in 33.
He eagled the par-5 10th and made a deuce at the par-3 11th to go to 6 under, and that's when he started thinking about breaking the course record of 64. He kept the pedal down, getting to 9 under par through 16 holes. He knew if he parred in, he'd break the course record.
Special stuff and it would get even more special with another birdie at 17. Double digits under par! 'I thought, 'OK, just don't screw this up at the last. You can even bogey and still shoot the course record.'' McIlroy said.
He launched a perfect drive at 18 and lofted an 8-iron to the heart of the green. All he said he was trying to do was two-putt from about 20 feet. He rolled it in for good measure to finish with five straight birdies and shatter the record by three.
'That was a special day,' he said in the understatement of the day.
'A member of the golf club phoned me and told me, and I thought it was a joke,' Michael Bannon, McIlroy's longtime instructor, told TheOpen.com ahead of the 2019 Open. 'No one can shoot 61 around Royal Portrush.'
'I actually thought he didn't play the last two holes,' said Maureen Madill, a longtime club member and former tour professional turned broadcaster. 'I asked, 'Did he play the whole way around? 17 and 18?' I thought, That's extraordinary.'
Indeed, it was.
Best round ever, I asked?
'It's up there. Definitely up there,' McIlroy said before adding the most memorable moment of our conversation. 'It's the first time I've ever felt in the zone. Ever since, when I get 7-, 8-, 9-under in a round, I've never been afraid to push it further.'
With the career Grand Slam complete following his dramatic victory at the Masters in April, McIlroy has struggled from a lack of focus. And there's some scar tissue from an opening-round 79 at the 2019 Open at Portrush, which dug McIlroy such a big hole that even a 65 the next day wasn't enough to make the 36-hole cut. Perhaps a chance to make some more history and win a major on home soil and prove that Portrush, which underwent a renovation ahead of the previous Open there, hasn't been Rory-proofed.
'Look, if I can't get motivated to get up for an Open Championship at home, then I don't know what can motivate me,' McIlroy said.

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya) DETROIT (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs in Seattle's 12-3 victory over Detroit on Friday night to move within one of Barry Bonds' 2001 major league record for homers before the All-Star break. Raleigh hit a solo homer off former teammate Tyler Holton in the eighth to tie the American League record of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013. Advertisement '(Holton) and I are really good friends and I've caught a lot of his pitches,' said Raleigh, who was in the lineup as the designated hitter instead of at catcher. 'I don't think that helped much, but I'm sure he's not very happy with me.' Raleigh hit a grand slam off Brant Hurter in the ninth. 'I didn't even know it was a record until just now,' Raleigh said. 'I don't have words for it, I guess. I'm just very grateful and thankful.' Seattle has two games left in Detroit before the break. 'Cal Raleigh ... this is just unbelievable,' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. "He's already set the AL record and now he's only one short of Barry. There are two games, so who knows?' Advertisement Raleigh hit 10 homers in March and April, 12 in May, 11 in June and has five in July. 'This is a very boring comment, but baseball is all about consistency,' Wilson said. 'This hasn't been one hot streak, he's doing this month after month. That says everything.' ___ AP MLB:

Tennis Fans Call Out Aryna Sabalenka For Hypocritical Behavior
Tennis Fans Call Out Aryna Sabalenka For Hypocritical Behavior originally appeared on The Spun. Aryna Sabalenka's hopes of winning her first Wimbledon title were crushed on Thursday by Amanda Anisimova. Advertisement Anisimova defeated Sabalenka in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. It was a really impressive performance for the American, especially considering where she was just a year ago. She took a break from the sport due to mental health concerns. Fast forward to the present day, and she's playing the best tennis of her career. "To be honest, if you told me I would be in the final at Wimbledon, I would not believe you," Anisimova said following her win over Sabalenka. "At least not this soon, because I mean, it's been a year turnaround since coming back and to be in this spot, I mean, it's not easy. And so many people dream of competing on this incredible court. It's been such a privilege to compete here, and to be in the final is just indescribable." While Anisimova expressed gratitude for her win, Sabalenka made it clear she wasn't thrilled about the loss. During her media availability on Thursday night, the three-time Grand Slam champion called out Anisimova for celebrating early during a point in the second set. Sabalenka asked the chair umpire to penalize Anisimova for hindrance. Advertisement "I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I was like 'I mean, that's a bit too early.' She kind of pissed me off like saying 'That's what she does all the time.' But I was grateful and thankful that she said that because I was like, it actually helped me to keep fighting. I was like ok, now I'm gonna show you the tennis," Sabalenka told reporters. "I came back because I got really angry in that moment. Probably in the 3rd set I should've remembered and probably it would've helped. But it is what it is." Jul 8, 2025; Wimbledon, United Kingdom; Aryna Sabalenka at her post match interview after winning her match against Laura Siegemund of Germany on day nine at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Mullane-Imagn Images. Not only did fans hate these post-match remarks from Sabalenka, they found them to be hypocritical. Advertisement For as great as Sabalenka is, she expressed herself on the court more than any other player. She probably shouldn't be judging others for doing the same. "I hope this is satire. Sabalenka rapidly becoming one of the more unlikeable players on tour because she'll do anything but credit her opponent," one fan said. "She's clearly not aware of how much obnoxious she is all over her matches," a second fan replied. "This woman just cannot lose gracefully," a third fan wrote on X. "Aryna complaining about hindrance is crazy," another fan said. This is the second Grand Slam tournament in a row that Sabalenka has been accused of being a sore loser. Following her loss to Coco Gauff in the French Open final, she made a pretty ridiculous comment that grabbed everyone's attention. Advertisement "If Iga had beaten me the other day, I think she'd come out today and get the win," Sabalenka said. Hopefully, Sabalenka can learn from her mistakes at Wimbledon. If not, fans will continue to get on her case.
