Hershey raising the price of candy bars due to cocoa shortage

Your favorite chocolate bar will soon come with a bigger price tag after Hershey announced it was raising the price of its candy over the high cost of cocoa. Hershey is expected to raise its prices for retail customers by double digits. Prices will generally increase between the low teens and 20 percent, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing a company official. But the WSJ reports three-quarters of the candy maker's products should continue to cost $4 or less. Hershey executives have said demand for its products has remained strong, per the WSJ. The company has yet to see its full profits for the summer, when consumers are inclined to grab a pack of Hershey's bars for S'mores by the fire. High cocoa costs are to blame for the price increases at Hershey and other treat companies. Last December, cocoa prices hit over $12,000 per metric ton, according to the WSJ. While costs have fallen to about $8,100 per metric ton this week, they still exceed historic levels. West Africa, which accounts for about 70 percent of the world's cocoa supply, has been hit with poor weather, plant disease, aging tree stocks and destructive small-scale gold mining. While weather conditions have slightly improved, industry sources told Reuters earlier this month West Africa will likely see another 10 percent decline in cocoa output in the 2025 to 2026 season. The WSJ reported in another recent article Swiss chocolatier Lindt & Spruengli had attempted to pass rising cocoa costs onto consumers through price hikes, but even that wasn't enough to make up for the higher cocoa costs.

First LPG tanker docks at Enterprise Products Neches River terminal in Texas

HOUSTON, July 23 (Reuters) - A liquefied petroleum gas tanker moored at the Enterprise Products Partners (EPD.N), opens new tab terminal along the Neches river in Texas, ship tracking data showed on Wednesday, the first vessel to arrive for loading at the facility. Energy research firm Vortexa said the mooring signaled the commissioning of the plant. Enterprise did not immediately reply to a request for a comment. Enterprise, one of the top U.S. ethane producers and exporters, has been adding to its natural gas liquids business by building and expanding facilities to export ethane and propane to meet growing global demand. The company announced in April plans to construct a new export facility, which could load either ethane or propane, located on the Neches River in Orange County, Texas. Ethane and propane are byproducts of oil and gas production. Ethane is primarily used to make plastics, while propane is used for heating and cooking. Phase 1 of Enterprise's Neches River project has a nameplate capacity of 120,000 barrels per day and will accommodate loading rates of up to 45,000 barrels per hour. It was expected to begin service in the second half of 2025. Medium-sized gas tanker Navigator Eclipse entered the Enterprise Beaumont dock late on Tuesday and was moored on Wednesday, according to ship tracking data on LSEG and Kpler. The vessel has only moved ethane between U.S. and China since May 2021, according to Kpler. The vessel is likely to head to Satellite Chemical's ( opens new tab Lianyungang import terminal in China with the commissioning cargo, Vortexa's Samantha Hartke wrote in a note. Satellite could not immediately be reached outside of office hours. A company uses the commissioning stage to test and ensure all aspects of a plant are working before moving to commercial operations. Phase 2 of the terminal, which will allow Enterprise to load up to 180,000 bpd of ethane and 360,000 bpd of propane, or a combination of the two, is expected to begin service in the first half of 2026.

Trump floats spectacular name change for AI after admitting he 'can't stand' current term

President Donald Trump attended an artificial intelligence summit on Wednesday, even as he revealed to the audience of eager tech moguls he was not a fan of the name. 'Around the globe, everyone is talking about artificial intelligence,' Trump said. 'Artificial. I can't stand it, I don't even like the name.' As the audience stared wordlessly at the president, he suggested they change the name. 'I don't like anything that's artificial so can we straighten that out please?' Trump asked. 'We should change the name.' As some in the audience laughed in response, Trump continued, 'I actually mean that.' 'I don't like the name artificial anything, because it's not artificial its genius. It's pure genius,' he said, indicating he would prefer the name 'genius intelligence' better than 'artificial intelligence.' President Trump spoke after the White House released it's AI Action Plan on Wednesday, which detailed the administration's efforts to boost the development and innovation of the technology. The document recommends that Trump streamline regulations and permitting to allow companies to build massive data centers and energy sources quickly to help accelerate the industry. It also recommends that the administration promote the export of American AI models abroad to help dominate the spread of the technology. The plan also stresses the administration's determination to enshrine the rights of free speech into artificial intelligence models, warning that the federal government would only contract with companies with AI models 'free from top-down idealogical bias.' During his speech, Trump announced he was getting rid of Biden's executive order which outlined a preference preference for companies who prioritized DEI programs and climate goals. 'We're getting rid of woke,' Trump said triumphantly, adding that, 'It's so uncool to be woke.' He said his goal was to root out 'partisan bias' or idealogical agendas from tech companies and artificial intelligence models such as 'critical race theory' which he described as 'ridiculous.' 'The American people do not want woke Marxist lunacy in the AI models and neither do other countries,' Trump said. 'From now on the US government will only work with AI that works with truth.' Trump acknowledged the dangers of artificial intelligence, but described the race with China and other countries on the technology as one the United States had to win. 'This technology brings the potential for bad as well as for good, for peril as well as for progress but the daunting power of AI is not going to be a reason for retreat from this new frontier,' The president signed two executive orders at the summit, joking he would not sign the executive order with an auto-pen, in a dig to his predecessor former President Joe Biden. 'Good luck because the race has just begun and we're going to win it,' he said to the tech executives as he exited the event.
