Lucknow: Experts elaborated the significance of statistics in national planning and policymaking during a programme organized at Lucknow University to mark Statistics Day 2025.

The event was organized by regional and zonal office of the National Statistical Office in collaboration with the department of statistics, University of Lucknow, to mark the birth anniversary of Late Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
Head of statistics department at LU Prof Masood H Siddiqui welcomed the participants. The event was inaugurated with the address by deputy director general, zonal office, Manoj Kumar, and director general, economic and statistical division, Selva Kumari.
Chief guest pro-vice chancellor, Prof Manuka Khanna highlighted the deeper aspects of statistics. A poster competition and a quiz competition were also organized.

"

LU library plans centre to explore music with tech

Lucknow: To enhance the cultural and academic environment of Lucknow University , the proposed Swar Setu Library Music cum Digital Media Centre will be presented for approval in the Tagore Library Committee meeting soon. Planned as a facility for the preservation, study and exploration of music and digital media, it will offer a space where traditional knowledge systems meet digital tools. According to the documents in possession with TOI, the centre will give students, researchers and artists access to musical resources, audio-visual production facilities, and a dedicated learning space. It will include books on music, audio and video recordings, cultural programme videos of the university, podcast recording facilities, archives of rare performances and a CD collection of all the theses submitted at the university. The centre will also offer access to virtual art exhibitions and integrate national digital platforms and audio-video archives. Planned with a budget of around Rs 5 lakh, the infrastructure will include soundproof rooms, music software, and essential furniture. A dedicated corner will be created in the memory of Dushyant Kumar for his contribution to Hindi literature. "This centre will support the study and preservation of music while providing resources for students, researchers, and artists to work and learn together," said honorary librarian, Tagore Library, Keya Pandey.

‘NSS helping shape policies for growth'

Lucknow: At least 25 teams comprising 50 students from various colleges and institutes participated in the state-level quiz competition 'Anvesha 2.0', organized by the state capital office of the National Statistical Office (NSO) to mark the 75th anniversary of National Sample Survey (NSS). Dean, faculty of science at LU, Sheela Misra said, "NSS plays a crucial role in capturing the socio-economic realities of our nation, helping shape effective policies for inclusive growth." Deputy director general, NSO, Suchita Gupta said, "NSS continues to provide valuable insights that support a developed and data-driven India." Anshika Shukla and Swati Dwivedi bagged first prize, Gangotri Singh and Pragati won second prize, while Eeshan Soni and Om Mishra won the third prize.
