Amen Teklay: Memorial service for schoolboy killed in Glasgow
A memorial service has been held for Amen Teklay, the teenager killed earlier this month in Glasgow.The 15-year-old died after being found seriously injured in the St George's Cross area of the city on 5 March.His loved ones gathered at King's Park Parish Church on Monday to remember the schoolboy, who has been described as "bright" and "kind".Plans are being made for Amen's body to be flown to Ethiopia where a full funeral will take place.
Amen, who was originally from Eritrea, had been living in Glasgow with his father for a number of years. He also recently received "right to remain" status in the UK.
There were emotional scenes outside the church after the ceremony as Amen's coffin was driven away in a hearse. Jamie O'Neill, Amen's Support Worker at Kingsway Community Connections said: "Today was on opportunity for people to grieve and say goodbye to Amen before he is returned to his family, who are in Ethiopia. "It has been a tough few weeks to process everything going on and it hurts to see young people in tears whilst mourning the loss of someone so special to them."I hope we can continue to pull together to support each other and forgive when we can. "Amen's father has been clear that he does not wish what has happened to Amen, to happen to anyone else, and that for us all to work towards."
Three teenagers, aged 14, 15 and 16, have appeared at Glasgow Sheriff court charged in connection with Amen's death.Two are charged with murder whilst the 15-year-old is facing an assault charge.All have made no plea and the 14-year-old and 16-year-old have been remanded in custody.A GoFundMe crowdfunding appeal set up to raise money for Amen's family is close to reaching its £10,000 target.

Ashton Jones, 29, had part of his skull removed in emergency surgery following an alleged assault during a holiday with friends in Thailand that left him unable to talk nearly a month later. The dad, from Cwmbran, Wales, had flown out to Bangkok with his group on May 30, but disappeared during a night out in the early hours of June 3. His shocked pals had no idea what had happened until he turned up at Chonburi Hospital, where doctors had placed him on life support. Ashton's friends say he had made a "miraculous recovery" as he remains in hospital care after the incident, but while he is now talking, he is not completely coherent. Speaking to WalesOnline on behalf of Ashton's family, Angela Roden Shepherd said he is "making very steady progress" with the family set to move him to rehabilitation following his "miraculous improvement" after his dad, Darren, refused a "do not resuscitate" order. She said: 'He's making very steady progress. "The next move is to get him back into the rehabilitation place he originally was in before he got a lung infection. To put into context just how miraculous a recovery Ashton has made so far, Darren was actually asked if he wanted to put a do not resuscitate order on Ashton just a week ago. "Darren said 'absolutely not' and in a few days Ashton had made a miraculous improvement. I spoke to Ashton a couple of days ago. He's talking. He's not coherent but he's able to communicate. He's off the ventilator. "He still has to be tube fed and he still has oxygen fed to him, and he still has to be restrained because he's in a lot of pain." Ashton's family aim to return the dad to Wales in a few weeks, where he will receive further treatment at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, including an operation to replace a lost part of his skull with the titanium plate. Angela added that the family, with the help of a British man and Thai woman who are putting up Ashton's father, has also spoken with police in Thailand, who they claim believe Ashton was assaulted. She said he was "beaten half to death", but added that the family has refrained from speculation as the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack remain unconfirmed. She said: "We don't know the circumstances around how and why, so we're not going to speculate. 'Ashton is starting to mumble things but it's too incoherent. The chances of catching them are virtually zero and the chances of getting money back to get Ashton home are virtually zero too.' Ashton travelled to Thailand without medical insurance, and his family is attempting to pay for the costs with a GoFundMe fundraiser, which has so far raised more than £22,000. Angela said: "We really need all the help we can get. We're still short of the funds we need to get Ashton back. Any help at all is greatly appreciated."

On November 8, the school girl was allegedly beckoned into the water but within minutes was "sucked under" when the engine was switched on. Her parents, Alan and Jennifer Chan, have said that more than a month after the tragic incident they are "still waiting for answers" and have "been forced to become their own investigators". As a state, the Maldives does not provide post-mortem examinations so the couple are hunting for information about their daughter's death "completely" on their own. Jennifer told The Times: 'We just want to know why Jenna died. There is no justice and we are completely on our own.' Alan flew out to the island in March to get hold of the hospital CT scans that were used by police to determine a possible cause of death. Jennifer, a surgeon, examined the pictures with her colleagues who she said were horrified "because Jenna's injuries were so horrific". The couple said they haven't even been allowed to speak to any of the teachers who were on board the boat at the time of the incident. There has been silence from the Maldivian government and all news about her has ceased Jenna's sister, Alice Chan Jenna's 17-year-old sister Alice has started a GoFundMe to raise awareness of the teen's accident and help with legal fees while the family fight for answers. The caption for the fundraiser reads: "My sister, 15 year old British-Singaporean Jenna Chan, was killed in a propeller accident during a school trip in the Maldives. "There has been silence from the Maldivian government and all news about her has ceased. "The Maldivian authorities investigation is still ongoing and we have yet to receive their report. "The Maldivian authorities and MWSRP have not given us access to interview the boat captain and crew nor the MWSRP staff. These are critical pieces for all of us. 'I can confirm that the Maldives Police Service was in Singapore and with the support of the Singapore Police Force facilitated interviews with witnesses on May 27 and 28, 2025. "We continue to actively support the investigation. We have not and will not stop seeking answers and supporting those involved.' The MWSRP said: 'At the time of the incident, Ms Chan was under the supervision of two teaching staff from SJII and an experienced boat crew. "The emergency response was in accordance with our procedures and Ms Chan was taken directly to a local health centre.'

Rugby player stabbed 10 times in front of girlfriend 'half an inch' from death
A rugby player was left just "half an inch" from death after he was stabbed 10 times in front of his girlfriend during a night out. Morgan Hopkins, 19, from Swansea, remains in hospital as he recovers from a 10-and-a-half hour operation after his ordeal. Morgan, who also goes by "Hoppy" with his Morriston RFC teammates, was attacked while the pair waited for a taxi in Gorseinon on Saturday. Morgan's family said he was stabbed 10 times with a surgeon commenting he was just half an inch away from having a wound deep enough that would have caused him to bleed to death. He has suffered life-changing injuries in the attack and has had part of his bowel removed and had tendons sewn back together. His mum, Victoria Owens Hopkins, said June 22 was the worst day of her life. She added: "In the early hours of Sunday morning my son and his girlfriend were sitting on a bench waiting for a lift home when Morgan was attacked with a knife. "He was stabbed 10 times. At first we thought they were superficial so we were all very relaxed. But that turned into 10.5 hours of Morgan having major surgery, where he had part of his bowel removed. He has had to have nerves and tendons sewn back in his arms." She added: "Half an inch saved his life. So in all this we consider ourselves very lucky." The family confirmed Morgan's surgeon said it would be a week to learn if the operation was successful, although Morgan has since been moved into intensive care and remains in a stable condition. South Wales Police has arrested and charged a 20-year-old man for attempted murder as well as being in possession of a bladed article, WalesOnline reported. A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "An investigation is ongoing in relation to a serious assault which occurred during the early hours of the morning on Sunday June 22, 2025, at The New Lodge Social Club, Alexandra Road, Gorseinon. "The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition. Twenty-year-old Kane Evans from Gorseinon has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article." Morriston RFC has set up a fundraiser in a bid to cover any medical costs from private rehabilitation services when he is released from hospital and not feel pressure about returning to work. A spokesperson for the rugby club said: "Not only does Morgan have physical wounds from this attack, but he will suffer from psychological trauma for years to come. "The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to raise money for Morgan as he's going to be out of work for some time. "We'd also like to raise some money for Morgan to be able to have some private sessions for physical and mental rehabilitation should he wish to have this. "Our thoughts go out to Morgan and his family during this difficult time and wish him a speedy recovery. See you on the rugby pitch again soon Hoppy."
