Of late, a deficiency in vitamin B12 — mainly found in animal products like meat, fish, and dairy — seems to have become extremely common, especially among those who consume these food groups. But why could that be happening?
One common reason behind this could be poor absorption, said Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai, adding that 'conditions like anaemia, celiac disease, Crohn's disease, or even long-term use of medications can affect how the body absorbs B12 from the digestive tract.'
Moreover, Dr Agarwal said that as people age, their stomachs produce less acid, which is necessary to release B12 from food.
'Some people also lack the protein needed to absorb B12 properly. Even with a meat-based diet, if your body can't absorb B12 efficiently, the levels can go down,' said Dr Agarwal.
Concurring, Dr Narander Singhla, lead consultant in internal medicine at CK Birla Hospital® in Delhi, said certain medications can also interfere with vitamin B12 absorption.
'These include proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine H2 blockers, commonly prescribed to reduce stomach acid, and metformin, a drug often used to manage diabetes. In older adults, absorption can naturally decline due to age-related changes, including reduced stomach acid production,' said Dr Singhla.

Additionally, cooking methods may also impact the vitamin B12 content of food. 'Overcooking or using very high temperatures can lead to nutrient loss,' said Dr Singhla.
The type of meat consumed also plays a role. 'Organ meats like liver are particularly rich in vitamin B12, whereas muscle meats such as beef or chicken contain comparatively lower amounts,' informed Dr Singhla.
One with low vitamin B12 can experience symptoms such as fatigue, memory issues, numbness, and mood changes. To prevent vitamin B12 deficiency, consuming a balanced diet that includes vitamin B12-rich foods is essential. 'These include organ meats (like liver and kidneys), fish and seafood, dairy products (such as milk, cheese, and eggs), and fortified foods like breakfast cereals, plant-based milk, and nutritional yeast,' said Dr Singhla.
If you suspect a deficiency, it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider for testing and to discuss whether dietary changes or supplements may be necessary.
'A blood test can check your B12 levels, and if needed, supplements or B12 injections can be advised by the doctor. Take the supplements as per the expert's advice. Don't go overboard on supplements,' said Dr Agarwal.

Roasted, spiced, and presented as a 'binge-worthy' alternative to chips, it feels harmless. But as Agarwal notes, 'If you're trying to lose weight then 100 grams of makhana is still okay—but if you're overdoing it, it is definitely not okay.' The reason? Makhana, though low in fat, contains considerable carbohydrates. Eat too much, and those calories stack up faster than you'd other words, just because it's not deep-fried doesn't mean it's diet-proof. Mindful munching is key—even with the healthiest of the most critical warning Agarwal gives is for those with kidney issues or Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Makhana is naturally high in potassium—a mineral often restricted in low-potassium renal diets. 'If you have kidney issues or CKD and you are on a low potassium diet, then you should definitely avoid eating makhanas totally,' she third reason is a vital reminder that what's good for one body might not suit another. In such cases, consulting a healthcare professional before adopting trendy dietary habits becomes makhana remains a versatile and nutrient-rich snack—high in protein, antioxidants, and minerals—it's important to remember that even superfoods have their shadows. Lucknow: From the depths of despair to the pinnacle of triumph, Rupa's journey is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience and rebirth. Once an acid attack survivor crippled by self-doubt, Rupa now radiates confidence, her smile illuminating the world around her. Today, she not only gazes at her reflection with pride but has also taken her rightful place in the workforce, her story serving as a beacon of hope for others to follow. On Plastic Surgery Day, acid attack survivors like Rupa on Tuesday shared their journeys from trauma to empowerment. At a special medical camp organised by SGPGIMS in collaboration with Chhanv Foundation, held at the Sheroes Hangout Café, survivors shared how reconstructive surgeries not only restored their appearance, but also rebuilt their confidence, functionality and hope. Rupa, one of the survivors, said, "I underwent seven surgeries to restore my facial, head, and neck region. Before the surgeries, I didn't want to look at myself in the mirror. But after the reconstructive procedures, I can now face the world with confidence. It's more than skin deep — it has healed a part of my soul." Another survivor Gita, who underwent multiple surgeries, shared, "For five years, I didn't dare to see my reflection; it was devastating for me. Though I can't be like I was before, even after two surgeries, every surgery brought back a little of me. I can eat better, speak clearly, and smile without pain. This day reminds me that I'm not alone on this journey. I thank all the plastic surgeons." A team of nine plastic surgeons and three nurses from SGPGIMS provided free, one-on-one consultations to survivors. Each patient received a personalised treatment plan, and doctors reaffirmed their commitment to offer free, unlimited surgeries for acid attack survivors. 'Acid Attack Injury – Information Booklet' by Prof Rajiv Agarwal, head of plastic surgery at SGPGIMS, was released at the camp. The booklet aims to guide survivors and their families through physical and psychological recovery. Prof Agarwal stated that plastic surgery in acid attack cases is a demanding and vital branch of reconstructive surgery, focused on restoring function, minimising disfigurement, and ultimately helping survivors regain a semblance of normalcy and quality of life. Prof Agarwal explained that acid attacks often stem from gender inequality, especially in South Asia, and are rarely seen in Western societies. Personal conflicts, rejection of romantic proposals, property disputes, and gang violence are common triggers. Chief guest Sudhir Hanwasiya praised the courage of survivors and appreciated the dedication of SGPGIMS doctors. Clinics on Cloud, a health tech company founded by Pune-based couple Abhay and Manashrri Agarwal, has announced the large-scale deployment of its AI-powered Health ATMs across underserved regions. A health ATM combines a physical kiosk with telemedicine and point-of-care devices designed to provide accessible and affordable healthcare. Abhay Agarwal, founder and CEO of Clinics on Cloud, spoke about the urgent need to modernise rural healthcare. 'India's rural population often lacks access to timely diagnostic services, which delays treatment and increases health risks. Our Health ATM concept is designed to bridge this critical gap—bringing over 65 rapid diagnostic tests to the doorsteps of rural citizens,' he said. This comprehensive preventive health screening can be done in 10 minutes and can also help reduce medical costs, Agarwal added. These AI-enabled Health ATMs can perform a wide array of health checks—from routine vitals and blood pressure to advanced screenings for diabetes, cardiac conditions, hemoglobin levels, and infectious diseases like dengue, malaria, Covid-19, and HIV. The tests include a general health check-up (body mass index, pulse, SPO2, body temperature, muscle mass, bone mass and so on), urine rapid test, ear and eye tests, pulmonary function tests among others. Reports are generated instantly, ensuring timely medical consultation through telemedicine, even in remote regions. Manashrri Agarwal, co-founder and Managing Director of Clinics on Cloud, added that the goal is to make preventive healthcare accessible, affordable, and accurate for every Indian—regardless of location. 'These Health ATMs have an accuracy rate of over 95% and operate at a fraction of the cost of traditional labs,' she said. In a unique collaboration with distribution partner DynaBlaze, Clinics on Cloud has engineered the Health ATMs to function without the need for electricity or internet, making them perfectly suited for deployment in electricity-deficient rural zones. The machines are available through EMI and rental options, also creating local employment opportunities by training health operators in villages. Ajay Dhumane, spokesperson for DynaBlaze, said, 'This is more than a healthcare solution—it's a rural empowerment movement. By enabling easy ownership and operation of Health ATMs, we're nurturing rural entrepreneurship while transforming public health outcomes.' According to Agarwal, till date, over 80 lakh individuals have benefited from this initiative, with 3000 Health ATMs installed in 150+ Indian cities and seven international markets.
