Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde, in a written reply, said that so far 98,619 textile mill workers have become eligible for homes in Mumbai as per the special campaign conducted by the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and labour department.
He said this while responding to a question raised by NCP legislator Rohit Pawar and others in the state Assembly.
DyCM Shinde further stated that the government issued a government resolution on March 15, 2024, for making available homes to the workers from closed and sick textile mills from Mumbai in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The government has assured that homes in the MMR region will not only be affordable but will also be equipped with essential facilities to ensure a dignified living for mill workers.
He said that so far, 15,870 homes have been distributed to textile mill workers -- 6,925 in 2012; 2,634 in 2016; 2,417 in 2016, and 3,894 in 2020.
He said that two developers have been selected after the expression of interest was issued, following the consent of the high-power committee for the construction of homes. The online forms are being filled up by the textile mill workers from June 16 for homes, and so far, 2,094 textile mill workers have submitted online applications.
The Deputy CM said the urban development department has initiated a process for the redevelopment of 11 chawls situated on the lands of nine mills of National Textile Corporation.
Earlier, Dy CM Shinde announced that one lakh homes will be constructed for mill workers. He instructed the officials that in order to implement the ambitious 'Houses for All' scheme, the state's new housing policy should focus on affordable, sustainable and environmental-friendly houses. He instructed the officials to prepare a detailed policy within a month so that citizens could easily benefit from the schemes of MHADA and the housing department and speed up the stalled redevelopment projects in the city.

PM Modi showcases India's cultural heritage with handcrafted gift

Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India's rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship by presenting symbolic, handcrafted gifts to global leaders during his ongoing five-nation tour , reflecting the country's artistic legacy and spiritual traditions. PM Modi gifted a hand-etched silver lion on a Fuchsite stone base to the President of Argentina, Javier Milei. The intricately detailed lion symbolises courage and leadership, while the green Fuchsite -- known as the 'Stone of Healing and Resilience' -- adds natural depth and meaning. This piece represents Rajasthan's renowned metalwork and gemstone craftsmanship, created using materials sourced from India's mineral-rich regions. For the Vice President of Argentina, Victoria Villarruel, a traditional Madhubani painting of the Sun from Bihar's Mithila region was shared. Known for its bold lines, intricate patterns, and natural colours, Madhubani art traditionally adorns homes during festivals. The painting highlights the Sun, a symbol of life and energy, surrounded by floral motifs--hallmarks of this age-old folk tradition. Continuing this gesture of cultural diplomacy, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, received two expressions of India's cultural and spiritual ethos. One was a Kalash filled with sacred water from the River Sarayu, revered in Hindu tradition and believed to bring peace, purity, and prosperity. Flowing through Ayodhya--the birthplace of Lord Ram--the river holds immense significance, and the metal Kalash embodies sanctity and abundance. The second was a silver replica of the Ayodhya Ram Temple, crafted by artisans from Uttar Pradesh. Cast entirely in pure silver, the model captures the temple's sacred architecture and symbolises righteousness, devotion, and cultural pride. It stands as both a spiritual keepsake and a tribute to India's intricate temple craftsmanship. These acts of cultural diplomacy complemented the Prime Minister's broader vision for India's role within BRICS. PM Modi embarked on a five-nation tour on Wednesday, July 2, with visits to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, between July 2 and 9. Currently, he is in Brazil, the fourth leg of his ongoing tour. He arrived in Brazil following visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina, where he held talks with President Javier Milei on strengthening trade and strategic cooperation. On July 9, Modi will head to Namibia, the final stop of his tour, where he is scheduled to address the country's Parliament. Earlier on Monday, PM Modi said that India would redefine the BRICS grouping under its upcoming chairmanship by focusing on 'Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.' Addressing the BRICS Summit in Brazil, PM Modi said, 'Under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form. BRICS would mean 'Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability'.' He affirmed that New Delhi would carry forward the spirit of people-centric progress during its leadership of the bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. 'In the coming year, under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will continue close cooperation on all subjects,' the Prime Minister said. PM Modi underlined how India's presidency of the G20 elevated the concerns of the developing world and promised a similar approach for BRICS. 'Just as during our G-20 Presidency, we ensured inclusivity and prioritized issues of the Global South in the agenda,' he said, 'In the same way, during our BRICS Chairmanship, we will take this forum forward with a people-centric approach and the spirit of Humanity First.' This message of unity and collaboration was reflected earlier in the day, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other BRICS leaders, partners and outreach invitees, gathered for the traditional family photo at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Monday morning (local time). The summit brought together leaders and representatives from BRICS nations and partner countries to discuss cooperation and strategic partnerships, marking a significant moment of unity and collaboration among the countries that the grouping represents. Hosted by Brazil from July 7 to July 9, the summit brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia during the event. Under its presidency next year, India will advance BRICS with people-centric approach and spirit of 'humanity first': PM Modi

Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 8 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra said that under India's BRICS presidency next year, the forum will have 'a people-centric approach and the spirit of humanity first.' He stated that India, under BRICS chairmanship, will continue to work closely on all key issues. In his address at the session on 'Environment, COP-30, and Global Health' at the 17th BRICS Summit on Monday, PM Modi said, 'Our goal will be to redefine BRICS as Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.' 'Under India's BRICS chairmanship next year, we will continue to work closely on all key issues. Our goal will be to redefine BRICS as Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability. Just as we brought inclusivity to our G20 Presidency and placed the concerns of the Global South at the forefront of the agenda, similarly, during our Presidency of BRICS, we will advance this forum with a people-centric approach and the spirit of 'Humanity First.' Once again, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Lula on this successful BRICS Summit,' he said. The 17th BRICS summit (July 6-7) held under Brazil's Chairmanship brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, as well as new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. India will hold the chairmanship of the BRICS in 2026. PM Modi expressed happiness that Brazil, under its chairmanship of BRICS, has given high priority to important issues such as the environment and health security. He noted that these subjects are not only interconnected but are also extremely important for the bright future of humanity. 'This year, COP-30 is being held in Brazil, making discussions on the environment in BRICS both relevant and timely. Climate change and environmental safety have always been top priorities for India. For us, it's not just about energy, it's about maintaining a balance between life and nature. While some see it as just numbers, in India, it's part of our daily life and traditions. In our culture, the Earth is respected as a mother. That's why, when Mother Earth needs us, we always respond. We are transforming our mindset, our behaviour, and our lifestyle.' He spoke about several initiatives launched by India, like Mission LiFE and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam. 'Guided by the spirit of 'People, Planet, and Progress', India has launched several key initiatives -- such as Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' (A Tree in the Name of Mother), the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, the Green Hydrogen Mission, the Global Biofuels Alliance, and the Big Cats Alliance,' PM Modi said. PM Modi recalled how India, during its G20 Presidency, placed strong emphasis on sustainable development and bridging the gap between the Global North and South. 'With this objective, we achieved consensus among all countries on the Green Development Pact. To encourage environment-friendly actions, we also launched the Green Credits Initiative.' He stated that India, despite being the world's fastest-growing major economy, is the first country to achieve its Paris commitments ahead of schedule. He said that India is also making rapid progress toward its goal of achieving Net Zero by 2070. PM Modi noted that India has witnessed a 4000 per cent rise in its installed solar energy capacity over the past decade and emphasised that India, through these efforts, is laying a strong foundation for a sustainable and green future. He said, 'For India, climate justice is not just a choice, it is a moral obligation. India firmly believes that without technology transfer and affordable financing for countries in need, climate action will remain confined to climate talk. Bridging the gap between climate ambition and climate financing is a special and significant responsibility of developed countries. We take along all nations, especially those facing food, fuel, fertilizer, and financial crises due to various global challenges.' 'These countries should have the same confidence that developed countries have in shaping their future. Sustainable and inclusive development of humanity cannot be achieved as long as double standards persist. The 'Framework Declaration on Climate Finance' being released today is a commendable step in this direction. India fully supports this initiative,' he added. He emphasised that the health of the planet and the health of humanity are 'deeply intertwined.' He stated, 'The COVID-19 pandemic taught us that viruses do not require visas, and solutions cannot be chosen based on passports. Shared challenges can only be addressed through collective efforts.' He stated that BRICS has also placed special emphasis on enhancing cooperation in the health sector and termed the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre, launched in 2022, a significant step in this direction. Highlighting India's cooperation with all nations, PM Modi said, 'Guided by the mantra of 'One Earth, One Health,' India has expanded cooperation with all countries. Today, India is home to the world's largest health insurance scheme 'Ayushman Bharat', which has become a lifeline for over 500 million people. An ecosystem for traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, and Siddha has been established.' 'Through Digital Health initiatives, we are delivering healthcare services to an increasing number of people across the remotest corners of the country. We would be happy to share India's successful experiences in all these areas,' he added. Later in a post on X, PM Modi stated, 'Addressed the session on 'Environment, COP30, and Global Health' at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. I'm grateful to Brazil for initiating a discussion on these topics at the BRICS Summit because these are important subjects for the future of humankind.' During the summit, the leaders held productive discussions on various issues on the BRICS agenda, including reform of global governance, enhancing the voice of the Global South, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, development issues, and Artificial Intelligence.
