Kolkata: Footfall across Kolkata restaurants is the highest this summer since the pandemic, with most eateries across south and central Kolkata seeing a full house during lunch and dinner.
Online orders saw a major spike over the last fortnight. The rise in footfall was around 20% compared to last summer, according to Hotel and Restaurants' Association of Eastern India (HRAEI) president Sudesh Poddar.
While the summer vacation is on, the weather, though warm, was better than last summer when the city was gripped by a heatwave. These factors may have contributed to a footfall spurt, felt Poddar. "While footfall rise every summer, this year it was around 20% more compared to last May-June.
Unlike 2024, it rained more often this time, making it a comfortable to dine out. It also helped that the IPL playoffs were played till this week.
It always attracts the young who love to couple cricket with eating out," said Poddar.
Oudh 1590 and Chapter 2 have seen steady growth in footfall since the beginning of May. "It has been rising steadily, and it helped that we had our biryani festival on throughout last month. Summers are usually good for sales, but this year it was even better, possibly due to the improved weather.
Despite the occasional scorching period, people have been gorging on biryani and other north Indian fare. At Chapter 2, sales have been moderately higher than last summer's as well," said Shiladitya Chaudhury, co-founder and owner of Oudh and Chapter 2.
Park Street has seen a larger crowd during both lunch and dining hours since mid-May, said restaurateurs. Peter Hu has seen a waiting crowd every evening over the last month.
"This has been the best summer since the pandemic, and the footfall was 15% higher. We've had people waiting to get in even on weekdays. One reason could be the weather, which has been more bearable than the last two summers. Secondly, along with the younger generation, the elders, too, are now more into eating out.
Online orders, too, have increased," said Siddharth Kothari of Peter Hu.
At Mocambo and Peter Cat, waiting crowds have gotten progressively bigger over the last fortnight.
"We had full attendance throughout the day since the beginning of May. It has really been a good summer so far, easily the most crowded since the pandemic across all our outlets, including Peter Cat," said Mocambo and Peter Cat owner Nitin Kothari.
"We had a near-full attendance even during weekdays since last Sunday. Food sales have jumped appreciably. Liquor sales have dipped since we have more families coming in now. But that has been more than made up by the higher footfall and larger food orders," said Pratap Daryanani, owner of Oasis on Park Street. Footfall has been driven by a bigger family crowd, said Poddar, who owns Songhai, MS Bar & Lounge, and Manthan.

Rohit Sharma's net worth in 2025: Everything you need to know about Mumbai Indian's top-scorer

Rohit Sharma has swapped whites for wealth in a way few cricketers ever do. The Mumbai-born opener has amassed staggering earnings through match contracts, IPL retainers and high-value endorsements. While he officially stepped away from Test cricket earlier this year, his bank balance shows no sign of slowing down. With annual central contracts, hefty per-match fees and luxury brand alliances, Sharma's financial portfolio is as diversified as his batting repertoire. Here's a closer look at how India's former Test skipper built his fortune—one run, one deal and one investment at a time. On-field earnings and match fees According to Mint, Sharma commands a Grade A+ central contract worth Rs 7 crore annually, plus match fees of Rs 15 lakh per Test and Rs 6 lakh per ODI. He was also retained by the Mumbai Indians for Rs 16 crore ahead of the 2022 IPL auction, ensuring a steady income even as Test duties wound down. His total estimated net worth, as reported by Celebrity Net Worth and other sources, stands at 25 million dollars, which is approximately Rs 213 crore as of July 2025. His IPL haul remains among the highest in the league, matching his reputation as one of India's most reliable hitters. Brand deals and investments As reported by Sportskeeda, Sharma earns roughly Rs 5 crore per endorsement. His roster includes global names such as Adidas, Hublot and Oppo, alongside domestic campaigns for CEAT and IIFL Finance. Off the pitch, he's invested in real estate—a 6,000 sq ft. apartment in Worli valued at around Rs 30 crore, per GQ India—and maintains a luxury car collection featuring a Lamborghini Urus and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Philanthropy and beyond Sharma's wealth fuels more than personal comfort. He's long supported underprivileged children's cancer treatments and champions wildlife conservation as a WWF-India Rhino Ambassador. His Rohit4Rhinos campaign raises both funds and awareness, ensuring his impact extends well past stadium gates.

Outer Delhi Warriors set to make bold debut in Delhi Premier League Season 2

New Delhi [India] July 5 (ANI): The Outer Delhi Warriors, the newest entrant in the Delhi Premier League (DPL T20), are officially set to make their much-anticipated debut in Season 2, according to a release from Outer Delhi Warriors. The franchise made an immediate impact by emerging as the highest bidder at Rs 10.6 crore and has wasted no time in announcing its intent, signing IPL sensation Priyansh Arya as its marquee player ahead of the player auction on July 6. Arya, who was the breakout star of DPL 2024 with 608 runs and six sixes in an over, went on to light up the IPL with Punjab Kings this year, scoring 475 runs at a strike rate of 179.24. His return to the DPL marks a powerful homecoming and a statement of ambition from the Outer Delhi Warriors. The franchise is helmed by Rajeshree Shete Iyer, founder of Platinum One Media & Consulting, who joins as Chief Executive Officer for the team's inaugural campaign. Known for her bold, brand-driven vision, Iyer brings a dynamic leadership style and sharp focus on building a fearless, future-ready squad. Ownership is led by Sunil Aggarwal, Chairman of Savita Paints Private Limited, who shared his excitement about this new venture, 'Outer Delhi has always had spirit. With this franchise, we now have a stage. We've built this team for the future -- and with leaders like Rajeshree Shete Iyer at the helm, that future starts strong. Her experience and energy make her the ideal CEO to take this team forward, both on and off the field.' The Warriors have also appointed Ashu Dani as Head Coach. A former Ranji Trophy player, Dani brings a wealth of experience and local cricketing insight. 'We're building a squad that reflects the character of Outer Delhi -- tough, talented, and fearless. The goal is not just to compete but to dominate. The foundation we're laying now will serve us for seasons to come,' said Coach Ashu Dani. As the DPL 2025 auction looms, all eyes will be on the Outer Delhi Warriors and the next wave of exciting talent they are set to bring in. (ANI)
