The Gandaberunda is back and so is the frenzy. Karnataka's favourite vintage watch from HMT has made its return in limited numbers. First launched in the 1970s, the collectible timepiece is once again flying off shelves. For many, the watch brings back a wave of nostalgia as it reminds them of old Karnataka, family heirlooms and timeless designs. People are now flooding social media to proudly showcase their growing collections.
What Is HMT Gandaberunda?
The Gandaberunda is not just any watch, it features the iconic two-headed bird, Karnataka's official state emblem. It symbolises strength and resilience. Originally produced by HMT decades ago, the watch has become a cult favourite especially among locals and heritage lovers.
The watch is made in various combinations like stainless steel strap, silver or golden dials and colourful faces. But the most talked about is the wine-coloured face which collectors chase down each time it is re-released.
HMT releases only a few of these every year and the rush begins the moment the watch is back in stock.
The Craze
One viral post that declared 'Gandaberunda is back," shared on June 19 has already gathered more than one lakh views on X.

Comedian and writer Nithin M Kamath, who tweets as CoffeeKudhitira?, posted, 'Got my hands on the HMT Gandaberunda, makes it 7 in the HMT collection now, hitting 10 by the end of the year."

Why Does It Matters To Many?
Tejas, an engineer who moved from Mysuru to Bengaluru, told PTI, 'I'm from Mysuru. Gandaberunda was the emblem of the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysuru under the Wodeyar rulers, and after India attained independence, it was retained by the Mysuru state as its emblem."
When Mysuru was renamed Karnataka in 1973, Gandaberunda continued as the state symbol.
Another watch buyer told the agency, 'If you ask me, HMT should stop all its new models and start producing watches like 'Gandaberunda' and 'Janata' (now out of production, but original ones could fetch up to Rs 18,000), which have more character than the most recent ones."
One more unique thing about the Gandaberunda watch is that the hour markers are in Kannada numerals.

The manager also shared with PTI that HMT once produced watches with hour markers in many Indian language numerals but now only the Kannada version, featuring Gandaberunda, is still in production in limited quantities.

Rising quartet presents intense rock track with honest message Rising rock band Dragon Pony has officially released their new single 'Radio Silence,' a raw and emotional track that delves into the lonely and complicated days of their time as trainees. The quartet, which debuted in September 2024, consists of vocalist An Tae-gyu, guitarist Kwon Se-hyuk, bassist Pyun Sung-hyun and drummer Ko Gang-hun. "Like an airship veering off course, this song captures the confusion and hardships we went through during our trainee years — when we often questioned where we stood and where we were headed," said vocalist Ahn. "Back then, we only had one computer, so the four of us would huddle around it to create music. We tried to channel all the anxiety we felt at the time into the sound — something that feels like it's slowly being pulled into a void," added guitarist Kwon. Although the track reflects on their past, the members said they still relate to its message. 'The uncertainty we felt then still resonates with us now. Even though we're no longer trainees, we're still searching for something, still chasing something,' said bassist Pyun. The Korean title of the song is 'Earth Boy.' 'We live on Earth, but it never felt like we truly belonged. That question led to the title. It reflects our desire to finally feel at home,' Pyun explained. As for the English title 'Radio Silence,' Pyun noted that it was chosen to reflect the lyrics. 'The phrase refers to a complete communication blackout, and we thought it perfectly captured the emotional state described in the song.' Though not yet a year into their debut, Dragon Pony has built momentum with numerous live performances. 'We've played both domestic and overseas festivals and even held two sold-out concerts in Taipei. Every experience has motivated us to make even better music,' said Ahn, reflecting on their first year. Guitarist Kwon expressed hope that Dragon Pony could contribute, even in a small way, to the current resurgence of interest in Korean rock. 'There's been a growing wave of interest in bands lately, and we'd be honored to play even a small role in that movement.' When asked about the band's unique strength, Ko recalled a recent meeting with You Hee-yeol, the head of the band's label Antenna and a renowned musician. 'He told us, 'You're a band that looks cooler today than you did yesterday.' That meant a lot. I think our biggest strength is that we're a band that's constantly growing.''

Cheon Seon-ran's vampire novel ‘The Midnight Shift' set for UK release by Bloomsbury
South Korean novelist Cheon Seon-ran's dark fantasy "The Midnight Shift" is set to be released in the UK next month in a translation by Gene Png, the Korean publisher Safehouse said Tuesday. The English edition is being published by Bloomsbury, the British house best known for the Harry Potter series. Originally published in Korea in 2021 under the title "The Savior Who Comes at Night," the novel follows Su-yeon, a detective numbed by loneliness, as she investigates a string of mysterious deaths at a hospital. At one crime scene, she runs into a mysterious woman, who claims to be a vampire hunter searching for her ex-lover and who is insistent that a vampire is behind the mysterious deaths. Translation rights to the book have been sold to Italy, Brazil and several other countries. Cheon is one of Korea's most popular science fiction and fantasy writers. Her breakout novel "A Thousand Blues" won the Grand Prize at the Korea Science Fiction Awards in 2020 and is headed for the big screen in the US, adapted for film by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Musk backs Samsung AI chip deal, calls it ‘just the minimum'
Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed Wednesday that he had a video call with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong to discuss a "real partnership" over their recent $16.5 billion AI chip supply deal. Responding to a user on X who claimed Samsung "has no idea what they signed up for," Musk replied, "They do." "I had a video call with the chairman and senior leadership of Samsung to go over what a real partnership would be like," Musk wrote. "Use the strengths of both companies to achieve a great outcome." On Monday, Samsung announced it had secured a record-breaking $16.5 billion supply deal, which Musk later confirmed involves Tesla's next-generation AI6 chips -- for Full Self-Driving technology. Musk added that the disclosed amount was "just the bare minimum," suggesting the actual value of the deal could be even higher. Following the announcement and Musk's endorsement, Samsung shares remained strong for a third consecutive day. On Monday, when the contract was revealed, Samsung shares closed at 70,400 won, marking the first time in nearly 10 months that the stock ended above the 70,000 won mark. As of noon on Wednesday, its share price stood at 72,900 won, up 3.26 percent from the previous day. In response to another X post questioning Samsung's ability to deliver chips using next-generation 2-nanometer technology -- and calling it an underdog compared to Taiwan's TSMC -- Musk responded, "Both TSMC and Samsung are great companies.
