Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe: 7-0 derby win wasn't as important as building fitness

Daily Recorda day ago
The Diamonds ran riot against their Lowland League neighbours
Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe shrugged off a 7-0 Monklands derby win over Albion Rovers and insists the result is irrelevant at this stage of the summer.
A sparkling performance from the Diamonds saw them run riot at New Broomfield, with goals from Lewis McGrattan, Sean McGinty, Craig Ross, Chris Mochrie, Cammy Cooper (2) and Dylan MacDonald.

But McCabe says coming through another game unscathed – following a 2-1 defeat against Welsh side Penybont last week – was m ore important than defeating their neighbours from the Lowland League.

He said: 'At this time of the season the result is irrelevant.
'I was pleased to get boys minutes, to get through the game with no injuries is a big plus, and it was a well worthy exercise, especially in that first half.
'I know [Rovers boss] Sandy Clark really well, and he has a young, energetic side, with a lot of trialist who had a lot to prove, so in terms of the intensity of the game and how it was played I was really pleased.
'We looked to improve on last week, which was our first game back after the summer, after loading the boys' legs, in terms of their fatigue levels, and then building on that again – could we add a bit more quality.
'We knew the fitness has been pretty much drilled into them from pre-season, so I thought there were loads of good things, the young boys came on and kept that freshness really well.'

McCabe added: 'The result, for me, is irrelevant, but I was really happy with the performance levels, energy levels, and everything that we had targeted before the game.
'It's probably a good guide for our young boys, to experience what a match tempo is like and how quickly the ball needs to move, as opposed to academy or in training.
'It was a really good exercise for both teams. Albion Rovers' boys will have sen the level we're operating at, and that's something they're trying to strive towards.
'But in terms of the game itself, it never really felt like a pre-season game,. I've played enough of them in my career where it's a bit slow and lethargic, but I think there was great intensity in the game and for both sides it was a worthy exercise.'
Airdrie have a bounce game against Premiership side St Mirren on Tuesday, and McCabe said: 'Hopefully that will get the boys a little bit sharper than what they were on Saturday, which was really good, and gradually improve every week.'

Niamh Gallagher hails Ireland's resolves in Wales win

Niamh Gallagher hailed the way Ireland were able to withstand early Welsh pressure during her side's battling 27-10 win over the hosts in their 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series opener. Tries from Sophie Barrett, Robyn O'Connor, Hannah Clarke, Jemima Adams-Verling and Ellie O'Sullivan-Sexton were enough to ultimately seal the triumph for the team in green, but they did not have things all their own way at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly. Ireland spent much of the opening 10 minutes inside their own 22 thanks to a period of early Welsh dominance. Wales also twice got themselves within five points of their opponents, at 10-5 and 15-10, through scores from Savannah Picton-Powell and Seren Singleton. Full time in Wales and it's an opening win for the @PwCIreland Ireland Women's U-20 in the @SixNationsU20 Summer Series 👏🏼 — Irish Rugby (@IrishRugby) July 5, 2025 But after staving off a sustained assault on their tryline, Ireland responded by taking the lead midway through the first half when prop Barrett dived over off the back of a rolling maul. And Gallagher, who played in Clarke for Ireland's third try during the second half, was delighted that their defensive efforts allowed them to kick-on towards victory. 'Getting a win to start the tournament is unbelievable, start as we mean to go on,' she said. 'There's so much more to see from us. It was a tough one, we were in our half for most of that game. 'We just thought we needed to get it out of our area and play up field. And then when we did get it up there, we showed them what we could do.' Amidst the driving rain, the encounter proved to be a physical test for both sides, with neither team letting up in the tackle. It was a gameplan Gallagher expected from her team's opponents and explained the importance of both forcing Wales into making errors, whilst keeping their own standards high. 'We knew that Wales were going to be a physical team,' she continued. 'We wanted to match that and make sure that we kept the ball and play on our terms. 'It was tough that Wales did stick to being dominant, but we knew we had to get up in their faces and try and make them make mistakes. 'We knew we had to be clinical in our own areas too and I think we were able to do that.' Next up for Ireland is a clash against France, who also won their opening match beating Italy 46-5, and Gallagher believes her side have got the tools to more than put up a fight. She added: 'We've got an excellent back three that we just want to get the ball out to. 'We're also getting there when it comes to securing our breakdowns which is good but of course, we can always look to improve our defence.'

Rangers take Champions League gamble but solution could be staring them in the face

Russell Martin his his squad at St George's Park for a training camp but have no scheduled games before showdown with Panathinaikos After playing their one and only confirmed friendly ahead of a crucial Champions League qualifier this month, Rangers have crossed the border for a five-day training camp. Russell Martin made his managerial debut for the club as Brugge visited Ibrox on Sunday and not for the first time this year, the Light Blues had to come from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw as fans got a first look at their team under the new boss and a couple of his new signings. ‌ Joe Rothwell, Thelo Aasgaard and Lyall Cameron had to settle for a half-time intro on the pitch, but just when they'll get another run-out remains to be seen, with no other games scheduled until Panathinaikos in two weeks' time. ‌ Martin and his squad are booked into England HQ at St George's Park this week. While their Premiership rivals enjoyed sunnier climes in Spain and Portugal, it's the outskirts of Burton Upon Trent for James Tavernier and Co. Now, there may be behind closed doors games organised for this week and next but as things stand, the weekend runout against Brugge is the only proper game before facing the Greeks in what will be the first major test Martin must pass. Middlesbrough head to Ibrox for a friendly between legs one and two but fans fear Rangers could be heading into the home leg a bit undercooked when it comes to match minutes. Sheffield Wednesday are also on site at St George's this week so there could be an opportunity of a game with the Owls, who have pre-season previous for taking on Rangers. But even then, it's quite the leap from a training camp kick around to a Champions League showdown. ‌ And it's an approach at odds with our our Euro reps. Hibs face FC Midtjylland in their Europa League second round qualifier on July 24 in Denmark and will have had five friendlies under their belt by the time that one rolls around. Dundee Utd welcome FC Una Strassen to Tannadice in the same round of the Conference League on the same date and Jim Goodwin will also have got five matches worth of minutes into his team's legs by then. Martin warned prior to the Brugge match that his players were "tired" after a number of intense training sessions designed to get his men used to the way he wants to play, which relies heavily on being able to run and run. But they say there's so substitute to playing matches and there's a valid concern that Rangers might be spending just a bit much time preparing to play at the expense of actually playing and a Greek tragedy could be brewing.

Developing Celtic transfer headlines on Ambrosino, Balikwisha, Jansson and de Haas as target green lights rival move

The 21-year-old Italy youth standout is expected to leave Naples this summer and the Premiership champions are linked with his signature In-demand Giuseppe Ambrosino has already given his blessing to a switch to Calgiari days before Celtic reportedly entered the fray for his services. The 21-year-old Italy youth standout is expected to leave Napoli on a loan with option to buy deal this summer and it appeared the Rossoblu were in pole position to land his signature. ‌ Now news of interest from Glasgow has emerged as Brendan Rodgers seeks further reinforcements after securing Benjamin Nygren, Kieran Tierney, Callum Osmand and Ross Doohan. ‌ Ambrosino turned heads at this summer's U21 Euros and netted a stunning free-kick against Germany in the quarter finals. He has been with his boyhood club Napoli since the age of 10 but he appears on the brink of exiting this summer with one year left on his current deal. Celtic-linked Justin de Haas recently opened up on the true story after missing out on a dream transfer to Chelsea when he was 19. The Dutch defender has bounced back from several setbacks and is now thriving at Portuguese side Famalicão with the Premiership champions among a clutch of clubs keeping close tabs on the versatile 25-year-old who is valued at around £3million. He said: 'Chelsea showed interest in the winter at the time (2019). I actually had my mind set on that. AZ did not want to let me go at that time and kept me to my contract. This was their right, but that is why it did not take place at the time. 'They then got a transfer ban at the time. I could wait, but then I couldn't play any matches for six months. Although Chelsea is of course top financially, it was not a good choice for my sporting development and that is why I chose PSV." Celtic are seeking reinforcements in wide berths with Nicolas Kuhn on the brink of joining Como, Jota out until 2026 and Yang earning admiring glances from Legia Warsaw and others. ‌ A pair of wide men appears a necessity and the two leading candidates are Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Rapid Vienna's Isak Jansson. Reports in Belgium are adamant talks between Celtic and Antwerp remain ongoing with Balikwisha a long-term target whose only blemish appears to be a chequered injury history. ‌ Jet-heeled Jansson has earned acclaim in Austria since filling the boots of Kuhn after his transfer to Glasgow in January 2024.
