Nico Iamaleava's UCLA football jersey number announced
UCLA will kick off its 2025 football season Aug. 30 versus Utah. The season opener is slated for 11 p.m. EDT at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California (Fox). 2025 will mark the Bruins' first season with redshirt sophomore Nico Iamaleava at quarterback. He transferred to UCLA from Tennessee. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound signal-caller appeared in 18 games for the Vols during the 2023-24 seasons. He completed 241-of-379 passing attempts for 2,930 yards, 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. Iamaleava also recorded 435 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 129 attempts at Tennessee. He entered the NCAA transfer portal April 12 and committed to UCLA on April 20. Iamaleava did not attend Tennessee's final spring practice and Orange & White Game before transferring from the Vols. He wore jersey No. 8 at Tennessee. No. 8 is retired by UCLA, honoring former Bruins' quarterback Troy Aikman. Iamaleava is listed to wear No. 9 on UCLA's official 2025 roster. Pair of LSU football stars named to Butkus Award watchlist for 2025 season
LSU football linebackers Harold Perkins Jr. and Whit Weeks were named to the Butkus Award watch list, announced Wednesday. The annual trophy is presented to the nation's top linebacker. The last player from LSU to take it home was Devin White in 2018. He led the team with 123 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 10 quarterback hurries. Weeks and Perkins with return from injuries for their third full seasons in Baton Rouge. Weeks went down with multiple lower-body injuries during the 2024 bowl game, while Perkins left the week four game against UCLA with a knee injury. The pair will lead a defensive front seven entering 2025 with high expectations in year two under defensive coordinator Blake Baker. Last year, Weeks ranked top five in the SEC in multiple categories. Another step forward in his production would make him a favorite to win the Butkus Award. He ranked second in the conference with 125 tackles while also adding 10 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, 3.5 sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception. Perkins had 17 tackles through four games played in 2024. He showed flashes of his elite abilities in 2022 before being moved to inside linebacker the following year. He'll assume the STAR position in Baker's system, utilizing his versatility as a pass rusher while also dropping in coverage and playing the spy. Perkins and Weeks both enjoyed on-schedule recoveries and were present for day one of LSU's fall camp.

UAE Team ADQ rider Maeva Squiban became the second-ever French stage-winner of the Tour de France Femmes after claiming Stage 6 with a solo attack. The 23-year-old distanced the peloton with over 30 kilometers to go on the final categorised climb of this year's first mountain stage, eventually crossing the line 1:09minutes before her closest opponent (FDJ Suez's Juliette Labous). Squiban joins Cedrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly) as the only French riders to win a stage in the modern women's Tour, with Kerbaol winning the sixth stage last year. Friday's stage will be the last hilly stage of the race, before the final two days in the mountains. The peloton will ride from Bourg-en-Bresse to Chambery over 159.7km.
