CHENNAI: When Shubman Gill swept Joe Root hard to the fence in the 62nd over, he was only six runs away from yet another century. Much like his double hundred in the first innings, this too had seemed inevitable from the time he walked out to bat on Day Four. India had already gained a sizable lead in the first innings but Gill knew they needed more. That he needs to ensure that England winning is out of the equation. And for that, Gill had to replicate what only eight other batters had done before in the history of Test cricket. From an Indian point of view, only the legendary Sunil Gavaskar had gone there before. Well, until Saturday. The last six runs took another 4.1 overs, but the moment eventually came as Gill worked off-spinner Shoaib Bashir to the leg side and ran for a quick single. Gill removed his helmet, raised his bat to the heavens before acknowledging the applause with arms aloft. Unlike Leeds or the first innings hundred, there were no roars or anger, but just pure joy as Gill wore the widest smile. From announcing his arrival as India captain in Leeds to stamping his authority in the first innings to making sure India do not lose the Test with another century on Saturday, Gill had come of age like never before in his Test career. This century, third of the series, had taken him past 500 runs in the series and comparisons are already being made to Gavaskar's 774-run series against West Indies in 1971. If he keeps up the form and resolve, Gill has three more matches to go above and beyond Gavaskar and may be, just may be, aim to surpass Donald Bradman's 974 in 1930 Ashes. That, however, would not be in Gill's mind. In fact, he might just be preoccupied with the timing of the declaration which is perhaps why he even forgot the trademark bow-down celebration. He came in when KL Rahul was batting, built a partnership with Rishabh Pant before consolidating alongside Ravindra Jadeja before tea.

Karun Nair is not doing himself any favours. On Day 4 of the 2nd Test between India and England at Edgbaston, the comeback man of Indian cricket, as he is fondly known, Nair threw away another start, getting out for 26 off 46 balls. Nair looked unconvincing from the very start, edging multiple deliveries and getting hit on the helmet, and eventually perished edging Brydon Carse to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. After starting the tour with a duck in the first innings at Leeds, Nair scored 20 while batting at No. 6 on both instances. Fast forward to the Edgbaston Test, Nair was promoted to bat at No. 3, in place of the dropped Sai Sudharsan. But here, too, things didn't improve. Nair showed promise both times, scoring a crisp 31 off 50 balls featuring five boundaries before he was undone by a delivery that bounced out of nowhere. In the second dig, with India looking to get quick runs, Nair looked uncomfortable before Carse ended his stay at the wicket. With yet another low score, the prospect of Nair getting another game looks tough. More worrying is the fact that on pitches where India have scored five centuries and a double hundred, Nair hasn't gone past fifty even once. And at 33, with guys like Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel waiting, Nair may simply not be given another opportunity in the Lord's Test starting July 10. I've always been prepared to bat at any position the team wants me to, and I was told a couple of days ago when we arrived for practice here at Edgbaston that there would be a probability that I would play at 3. So I was mentally very well prepared to go out there and bat at 3. I've always enjoyed setting up the game,' he said.

Carlsen beats Gukesh in blitz, moves into lead
Bengaluru: From the highs of rapid, reigning world champion D Gukesh had to contend with the brutal nature of blitz, spiralling to five losses in a row and giving up his lead at the SuperUnited Croatia Rapid and Blitz on Saturday. But it worked out, so I can't complain,' Carlsen said after beating Gukesh. The world No.1 who ended the rapid segment four points behind leader Gukesh, overtook him after six rounds of blitz. In Round 8, Praggnanandhaa R, who had a much better day than his fellow Indian overall, went from a pawn up and a seemingly winning position against Carlsen to losing a piece and the game against the Norwegian in a time scramble. In the final round of the day, Praggnanandhaa defeated Gukesh which meant the world champion ended the day with seven losses in nine rounds. Carlsen had an unbeaten 7.5/9 run on day 1 of the blitz to move into sole lead with 17.5 points. Nine more rounds of blitz will be played on Sunday and Gukesh will have to pick up the pieces after a torrid day. Asked about former world champion Garry Kasparov's words of high praise for him after he defeated Carlsen in the rapid segment, he said: 'I still see myself as a player who is working hard to improve everyday…I'm really glad that Garry said that but there's still a long way to go.'
