Where Tigers will unleash ‘special talent'

Yahoo11-07-2025
Richmond coach Adem Yze will unleash 'special talent' Taj Hotton in a variety of roles in his highly anticipated debut on Saturday night.
The Tigers selected Hotton with one of their six first round picks last year despite him missing a chunk of the year through an ACL setback.
Hotton showed why he was once touted to go as high as pick No.1 prior to injury through strong performances in the VFL on return.
With the absence of spearhead Tom Lynch through suspension, Hotton could spend time deep inside the Tigers' 50.
But as Yze sees it, Hotton has the capacity to play deep, high and even pinch hit in the middle of the ground.
'He's just a pure forward, so we can play him at either line. He can go deep, he can play a high-forward role,' he said.
'Then he has pinch hit in the midfield in the VFL the last couple of weeks, so we might see him around the ball late in the game as well.
'We'd like to give him that exposure – whether it's this week or coming weeks.'
The 183cm Hotton can play taller than his height suggests, as he launches at the footy with consummate ease.
Yze says Hotton's areal power, craft at ground level and work ethic is why Richmond coaches, players and supporters are itching to see the young talent under MCG lights against Essendon.
'He's a special talent, when you've got the ability to jump and mark like he does and then at ground level do things, it's really hard to coach,' he said.
'It's the reason he went so high in the draft and the reason we rated him so highly going into the draft.
'There's all those things and then there's his work ethic, to get where he is today to be ready to play at AFL level after three VFL games is a credit to him.
'The spotlight is going to be on him like it was on Sammy (Lalor) earlier in the year and like it has been for all our first round picks.
'We've got to help him through that (and) he understands he's got a nice block of games to start feeling like he belongs at AFL level.'
Richmond, with three wins, also welcomes back defender Jayden Short from injury, while Nick Vlastuin will celebrate his 250th game.

First image of Christian Gonzalez facing Stefon Diggs at Patriots camp

The New England Patriots showed off the first image of All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez lining up against four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a social media post on Thursday. Gonzalez admitted earlier in the week that he was excited to match up against Diggs in practice. Iron sharpens iron, as the saying goes. Gonzalez is on the rise as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and Diggs is looking to climb back into the elite tier of wide receivers, following an ACL injury last October. Before the injury, Diggs was coming off six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. There's hope that he can get back to that same level in New England. One way for Diggs to test himself is frequent head-to-head matchups against one of the top corners in the game. Gonzalez recently made ESPN's top-10 cornerbacks list, which polled votes from executives, coaches and NFL scouts around the league. The former Oregon standout landed at No. 6 in the rankings with one NFL assistant comparing him to the No. 1 player on the list, Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II. "I think Gonzo is the next great one," a veteran NFL assistant said, via ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "Skills, patience, length. He's the closest thing to Pat [Surtain II]. Smooth, big athlete, travels a lot, can matchup against the best guy." Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. On this day: Celtic sign Larsson

On 25 July 1997 Celtic signed striker Henrik Larsson from Dutch side Feyenoord with little knowledge of just how monumental an impact the Swede would have. Larsson followed manager Wim Jansen to Glasgow as Celtic were preparing try to stop Rangers from winning a 10th successive title. And the Sweden striker helped his side do just that. Despite not getting off to the best start - including scoring an own goal in his first European outing - Larsson went on to score 19 goals in his debut season in Glasgow and inspire Celtic to their first league title in a decade. Larsson would go on to make over 300 appearances in the hoops, scoring 242 goals - including 15 against Rangers. He was a driving force in Celtic's run to the Uefa Cup final in 2003, two years after helping them to a domestic treble, and won four league titles, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups before joining Barcelona. When that departure finally came in 2004, it was clear Larsson had cemented himself as a Celtic legend.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love named No. 68 on NFL Top 100 players list

A second Green Bay Packers player has been named one of the NFL's Top 100 players. Quarterback Jordan Love is No. 68 in his second appearance in the league's annual ranking, which players vote on. Packers pass rusher Rashan Gary was named No. 80 on July 14. The Top 100 list began rolling out in late June and will continue through the exhibition portion of the season; the top 10 players are announced Sept. 1. Love fell from his 2024 debut spot of No. 34 after injuries disrupted his season. Missing two starts and large parts of two other games, he threw for 3,389 yards and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions — the biggest weakness of his game. But over the last two seasons, Love is one of only two quarterbacks — with Detroit's Jared Goff — to throw at least 25 touchdown passes with a passer rating of 95-plus. Since becoming the Packers starter in 2023, he's thrown for multiple TD passes in 19 games, tied for third in the league over the last two seasons. "It throws me off just how comfortable he is and just how the ball comes off his hands," Gary said in the NFL's X post announcing Love's ranking. "Easy, man. I don't know if he's really got his eyes open or even thinking about it." Some opponents also spoke in the video about what makes Love such a threat. "The accuracy of the ball — deep shots, intermediate routes — he kind of has everything," Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips said. So far, Love and Gary are the only two Packers players to make the list, but cornerback Xavier McKinney has a good chance to join them.
