National Day plans in motion
KUALA LUMPUR: Themed Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni (Prioritising the People), this year's National Day 2025 celebrations will feature an array of events, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the National Day logo featuring Malaysia Madani will also be maintained until 2027.
'The theme portrays the government's priority to ensure the welfare of the rakyat will be emphasised,' he said when launching the theme and logo at Angkasapuri here yesterday.
Fahmi said National Day 2025 will commence with the launch event on July 25 in Muar, Johor, while the main event on Aug 31 will once again be held at Dataran Putrajaya.
To further strengthen the unity of the country's regions and states, Malaysia Day on Sept 16 will be held in Penang, he added.
'Choosing Penang as the venue is in line with the rotation practice among Sabah, Sarawak and states in the peninsula to further strengthen the unity among the territories and states,' he explained.
He also said that several programmes have been outlined leading up to the main event in August and September, including 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang, Merdeka Countdown, Quran Hour and Wayang Pacak Merdeka.
'The flying of the Jalur Gemilang campaign this year will see an addition of two new clusters – industry and government agencies – on top of five clusters from last year.
'This campaign is to encourage the rakyat to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises to show respect and care for the country,' said Fahmi, who is also the National Day and Malaysia Day Main Committee chairman.
He urged the public to support the grand celebrations nationwide.

Ministry ensures funding for Malaysian Media Council soon
PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry is working to secure funding for the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) as soon as possible, according to Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. On public health concerns, Fahmi noted that the Health Ministry (MOH) has been instructed to monitor the ongoing Southwest Monsoon, which brings extreme heat until September. The public is advised to heed MetMalaysia's weather warnings and MOH's health advisories.

In an exclusive interview with Bernama, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia B. N. Reddy said the mission recognises that many applicants face difficulties in providing proof of ancestry, particularly due to historical migration patterns and the loss of documents over time. "Before OCI status is issued, individuals need to provide documents proving Indian origin, up to the third generation. "The challenge is that many documents are not available because those who came here during the British era often did not retain them, and some were lost during the war period,' he said. Reddy said the High Commission has been engaging with the Indian government to allow for the use of documents issued by Malaysian authorities and former British colonial administrations to support OCI applications. "We have tried to get our government to agree that documents issued by the Malaysian government or former Malaya authorities can be accepted. "If a document identifies India as the country of origin, we can issue the OCI card,' he said. He said currently around 100,000 of over two million Malaysian Indians are holding OCI cards. OCI status allows foreign nationals of Indian origin to travel to India without a visa and grants certain rights, including the ability to own property under specific conditions, but does not confer citizenship. - Bernama

Laos to deploy soldier-teachers in rural areas

The initiative focuses on areas with difficult terrain, limited infrastructure, poor transportation, no internet and little or no access to electricity or healthcare, Lao Economic Daily reported Monday (June 30). Soldier-teachers will step in when regular teachers are unavailable due to illness, maternity leave, official duties or other personal reasons. Most recruits will be graduates of teacher training programmes. After completing short-term military training, they will be deployed to meet demand in hard-to-reach communities. This initiative is part of the Lao government's strategy to improve access to education and reduce dropout rates in disadvantaged areas. - Xinhua
