Hong Kong expected to gain HK$428 million economic boost from football festival

One hotel sector representative said his firm expected a 12 per cent increase in room rates over the event period compared with the same time last year, exceeding their original forecast of an 8 per cent rise.
The Hong Kong Football Festival, which kicked off on Thursday, involves four major European clubs – Liverpool, AC Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – at Kai Tak Stadium.
Organiser TEG Sport told the Post that more than 35,000 fans attended the open training sessions for Liverpool and AC Milan on Thursday and Friday.
It said Saturday's match between the two clubs drew 49,704 people, the largest crowd for a live football match in Hong Kong.

'We have seen incredible demand from Hong Kong football fans and those in mainland China and around the world,' TEG Sport managing director Rachael Carroll said.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday that the rapturous reception for his team at the Hong Kong Football Festival had given their new striker Viktor Gyokeres a 'very good first impression' of the club. The Swede joined for an estimated US$74.2 million (HK$582 million) from Sporting Lisbon this week, as Arteta continued a spending spree aimed at upgrading on three successive English Premier League runners-up finishes. The 27-year-old Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, trained with his new teammates in front of 18,563 people at a boisterous Kai Tak Stadium on Wednesday night. Arteta was planning to discuss with medical staff whether Gyokeres would make his debut in the sold-out Kai Tak match against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. 'When the news broke [of Gyokeres signing], he realised the magnitude of this club he was going to be representing, how fast everything goes viral,' Arteta said. 'His immediate reaction was 'wow'. Dozens of Hong Kong, overseas Tottenham fans gather for club-themed drone show
Dozens of spectators, largely local and overseas Tottenham Hotspur fans, arrived hours before a drone show on Wednesday night at the Hung Hom waterfront as the city celebrated its first major football festival. Advertisement As many fans stood just outside or inside the Kerry Hotel in hopes of attracting their favourite players' attention, others walked around the premises and along the harbourfront to get a prime view of the show, which is due to start at 7.30pm. 'It's my first time seeing it, and I'm looking for something a little flashy,' said Ha Byung-jun, a 21-year-old student and Tottenham fan from South Korea. The drone show will feature dynamic Tottenham-themed animations and images, paying tribute to the club's storied heritage and passionate global supporters, designer OWOWWW Creative (Hong Kong) said. According to the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club's website, the drone show aims to mark the team's very first north London derby game outside the UK against Arsenal, and pay tribute to the club's history. Advertisement For some Tottenham fans, the show also provided an opportunity for them to see their favourite team at the hotel, with some even arriving early in the hopes of getting a photo with or an autograph with their favourite players. Among them was Caleb Shun, a 20-year-old local Tottenham fan, who said he had been outside the hotel with his friends since midmorning to get an autograph and a photo with South Korean Son Heung-Min, the club's captain and forward.
