From street name to gobbledygook

The Hindu11-06-2025
The street sign says it all – Yahali 3rd Street. There are three of them, all connecting Anna Salai with GN Chetty Road, at Teynampet, very close to Semmozhi Poonga. Only Yahali is not the correct name. Google maps has compounded matters further. You need to search under Yaya Hali Street if you need to find it. The correct name is Yahya Ali Streets – 1, 2 and 3, and they take their names from Justice Yahya Ali of the High Court of Madras.
The learned judge is not in public memory. When I spoke to a friend on this, he said that the Internet has no reference to such a judge, and I guess that would mean such a person did not exist. But he did. And when he died as a sitting judge in 1949, the High Court convened to condole his passing. The brilliant barrister and then Public Prosecutor V.L. Ethiraj led the mourners. He dwelt on the 'keen intellect, great learning, profound human understanding and exquisite courtesy we found in that frail figure.' But to get full biographical details we need to turn to the speech of an illustrious contemporary, V.C. Gopalaratnam who spoke on behalf of the Madras Advocates Association.
Yahya Ali was born in August 1893 in Nellore, his father serving as Assistant Secretary in the Finance Department of the Nizams of Hyderabad. He graduated in History and Economics from the Presidency College in 1916 and then qualified in Law. He set up practice in Nellore and became Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor. He was a member of the Madras Legislative Council as well. In between he became Chairman of Nellore Municipality, his election being testimony to the regard he enjoyed from all residents of the town. It was a place notorious for communal tension and being a Hindu majority, it was considered impossible for a Muslim to win the ballot.
In 1926, Yahya Ali became District Judge, being posted in that capacity to various parts of Madras Presidency. His specialisation in matters concerning finance led to his being appointed by the then Imperial Government in 1942 as the Chairman of the Appellate Income Tax Tribunal where he equipped himself 'with a thorough and exhaustive knowledge of Income Tax Law and Procedure.' In 1945 he became a judge of the High Court of Madras. It is interesting to note that he sat in judgement till the last day of his life, taking ill on April 21, 1949, and passing away the next day.
While these details are from Gopalaratnam's speech during the condolence meet, we learn some more from what the then Chief Justice P.V.Rajamannar had to say. Yahya Ali he noted, was a connoisseur of Telugu poetry and 'he was a deeply cultured person- culture with the best ingredients of what I may call Moghul culture – urbanity, catholicity and instinctive love of all that was beautiful.'
What was his link to Teynampet? He was at the time of his death Mutawalli (trustee or guardian) of the Teynampet Mosque in which his family had taken a deep interest. It was also in the precincts of this mosque that Yahya Ali was buried. And eventually a locality was named after him. And from there, the name has morphed phonetically as it were, to what it is now with street names changing accordingly.
I wish the Corporation would be more careful with street signs. We have suffered enough mutilation with truncation of many names to initials, morphing of others, and of course, name changes at the drop of a hat.

Sanatan Dharma a ‘perverted ideology', has ruined India: Maharashtra MLA Jitendra Awhad

A political row erupted in Maharashtra on Saturday after Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Jitendra Awhad claimed that Sanatan Dharma 'ruined India' and described the ideology as 'perverted', ANI reported. Awhad made the remarks in response to a special court in Mumbai acquitting Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pragya Singh Thakur, Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit and five others on Thursday in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The blast has been referred to as an incident of ' saffron terror '. 'Sanatan Dharma has ruined India,' ANI quoted Awhad as telling reporters on Saturday. 'There was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma. We are followers of Hindu Dharma. It was this so-called Sanatan Dharma that denied our Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj his coronation. This Sanatan Dharma defamed our Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.' He added that the 'followers of this Sanatan Dharma tried to assassinate' anti-caste activist Jyotirao Phule. 'They threw cow dung and filth at [anti-caste activist] Savitribai Phule,' Awhad said. 'This very Sanatan Dharma conspired to kill Shahu Maharaj. It did not even allow Dr BR Ambedkar to drink water or attend school.' The MLA said that it was Ambedkar who rose against Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti and rejected its oppressive traditions. '…One must not be afraid to say openly that Sanatan Dharma and its Sanatani ideology are perverted,' he added. The Manusmriti is a Hindu scripture authored by a medieval ascetic named Manu. It has been widely criticised for its gender and caste-based provisions. Responding to Awhad's statements, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sambit Patra on Sunday said that the NCP-SP legislator had used derogatory language for Sanatan Dharma. 'He [Awhad] said that Sanatan Dharma has destroyed India and that there was never a religion called Sanatan Dharma,' Patra told reporters. 'You have insulted the truth, spoken against [Hindu deity] Shiva, and opposed the beauty of India – an India whose beauty lies in its respect for all.' The BJP leader added: 'Today, I want to ask respected [Nationalist Congress Party founder] Sharad Pawar Ji and his daughter [NCP-SP's] Supriya Sule, who is also a Member of Parliament: is this the official line of your party, or is this just Jitendra Awhad's personal opinion?' 2008 Malegaon blast Six persons were killed and around 100 were injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon in northern Maharashtra on September 29, 2008. Thakur and Purohit were arrested later that year. Five others – Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sudhakar Chaturvedi – were also named accused in the case. All seven of them were charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Indian Penal Code. The case was initially investigated by the Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad. It was transferred to the National Investigation Agency in 2011. On Monday, a National Investigation Agency court, while acquitting all the accused persons, said that the prosecution failed to establish their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Israeli minister Ben-Gvir says he prayed at Al-Aqsa mosque compound

Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Sunday and said he prayed there, challenging rules covering one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East. Israel's official position accepts the rules restricting non-Muslim prayer at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which is Islam's third holiest site and the most sacred site in Judaism.(File/Reuters) Under a delicate decades-old "status quo" arrangement with Muslim authorities, the Al-Aqsa compound is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and Jews can visit but may not pray there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement after Ben-Gvir's visit that Israel's policy of maintaining the status quo at the compound "has not changed and will not change". Videos released by a small Jewish organisation called the Temple Mount Administration showed Ben-Gvir leading a group walking in the compound. Other videos circulating online appeared to show him praying. Reuters could not immediately verify the content of the other videos. The visit to the compound known to Jews as Temple Mount, took place on Tisha B'av, the fast day mourning the destruction of two ancient Jewish temples, which stood at the site centuries ago. The Waqf, the foundation that administers the complex on a hillside in Jerusalem's walled Old City, said Ben-Gvir was among another 1,250 who ascended the site and who it said prayed, shouted and danced. Israel's official position accepts the rules restricting non-Muslim prayer at the compound, which is Islam's third holiest site and the most sacred site in Judaism. Ben-Gvir has visited the site in the past calling for Jewish prayer to be allowed there. Ben-Gvir said in a statement he prayed for Israel's victory over Palestinian militant group Hamas in the war in Gaza and for the return of Israeli hostages being held by militants there. He repeated his call for Israel to conquer the entire enclave. Suggestions that Israel would alter rules at the Al-Aqsa compound have sparked outrage in the Muslim world and ignited violence in the past. There were no immediate reports of violence on Sunday. A spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned Ben-Gvir's visit, which he said "crossed all red lines." "The international community, specifically the U.S. administration, is required to intervene immediately to put an end to the crimes of the settlers and the provocations of the extreme right-wing government in Al-Aqsa mosque, stop the war on the Gaza Strip and bring in humanitarian aid," Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in a statement.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Should Exit MVA, INDIA Bloc If Committed To Hindutva: Manisha Kayande

Senior Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande launched a scathing attack on opposition leaders, questioning their stance on Hindutva and accusing them of maligning the Hindu community for political gains. In a pointed statement, she demanded that Shiv Sena(UBT) walk out of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the INDIA bloc if it still stands by its saffron ideology. Kayande's remarks came in response to recent comments made by NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Jitendra Awhad, who said, "Sanatan Dharma has ruined India". Kayande, while slamming Awhad, told IANS, 'His only agenda has been to defame Hindus and indulge in Muslim appeasement. He consistently questions police investigations and state systems just to further his political ambitions.' Targeting former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, she said, 'We went to the Tilak Bhavan, the Congress headquarters here, and sought its shutdown. This party behaves like the 'Pakistan National Congress'. The term 'saffron terrorism' was first coined by Congress and Sharad Pawar, but the truth is, a Hindu has never been a terrorist. Sadhvi Pragya and Lt. Col. Purohit were falsely implicated, but the NIA court has proven that the so-called Hindu terrorism narrative was fabricated.' Speaking on Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur's claim that there was a conspiracy to trap Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kayande said, 'She was tortured mentally, physically, and socially for 17 years. Despite being a Member of Parliament, she was denied justice. Col. Purohit, who served the nation, was also a victim of this conspiracy. We welcome the NIA court's verdict.' On Uddhav Thackeray attending the INDIA bloc meeting on August 7, she remarked, 'If Uddhav ji is attending the INDIA bloc meeting, he must show courage. Shiv Sena's mouthpiece 'Saamana' had earlier criticised the idea of saffron terror. Now, the Congress, which leads this bloc, openly uses that term. If Shiv Sena truly believes in its saffron ideology, it should immediately withdraw from both the MVA and the INDIA bloc.'
