The unexpected risk Ivy League students face using ChatGPT in class
The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT has introduced new challenges in US higher education, especially within Ivy League universities. These prestigious institutions are grappling with how to integrate AI in learning while maintaining academic integrity.
As reported by Forbes, the use of generative AI presents both opportunities and risks for students, educators and the institutions themselves.
Ivy League schools have not imposed blanket rules on AI use, but instead emphasise the autonomy of individual instructors to determine policies in their courses. This approach reflects the complexity of AI's impact on learning outcomes and academic honesty, and it places responsibility on students to understand when and how AI can be used appropriately.
Instructor and course autonomy define AI policies
Princeton University's official policy states that if generative AI is permitted by the instructor, students must disclose its use but not cite it as a source since AI is considered an algorithm rather than an author. The policy further advises students to familiarise themselves with departmental regulations regarding AI use, as reported by Forbes. Similarly, Dartmouth College allows instructors to decide whether AI tools can be used based on intended learning outcomes.
This decentralised system means that students cannot assume uniformity in AI policies across courses, even within the same institution. A student permitted to use AI for brainstorming in one class might find it prohibited in another. This variation extends to disciplines; STEM courses may allow wider use of AI tools, while humanities departments like English often restrict AI to preserve critical thinking and originality.
AI misuse is considered academic dishonesty
Several Ivy League schools, including the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University, have clearly stated that misuse of generative AI constitutes academic dishonesty. According to Forbes, students who improperly use AI may face disciplinary measures similar to those for plagiarism.
Understanding how AI functions is critical for students to make informed decisions about its use.
They need to be able to evaluate AI-generated content critically, identify hallucinations or inaccuracies, and disclose AI assistance when allowed. As Forbes reports, schools also emphasise the importance of respecting intellectual property rights, warning against uploading confidential or proprietary information to AI platforms without proper protections in place.
Policies are evolving alongside AI technology
Given the fast pace of AI development, Ivy League institutions regularly review and update their AI guidelines.
Columbia University notes that guidance on generative AI use is expected to evolve as experience with the technology grows, as reported by Forbes. Faculty are encouraged to experiment with new pedagogical methods and adapt their course policies to reflect changing realities.
Students preparing for collegiate study are advised to develop technological literacy and critical thinking skills to navigate these shifting policies successfully.
The indiscriminate use of AI tools may hinder their ability to demonstrate independent thought, a quality highly valued by Ivy League admissions and faculty alike.
In summary, Ivy League students face the unexpected risk of navigating a complex and evolving landscape of AI policies. While generative AI offers powerful tools for learning, misuse or overreliance can lead to academic consequences. Awareness, transparency and critical engagement with AI are essential to avoid these risks, as these elite US institutions continue to balance innovation with academic standards.

OpenAI introduces study mode for deeper, structured learning for students
OpenAI on Tuesday announced the launch of a 'study mode' in its large-language model-based chatbot, ChatGPT, to help students work through problems instead of simply getting the answer to a question. The new 'study mode' will be available to all logged-in users of ChatGPT's Free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. It will also be available with ChatGPT Edu over the next few weeks, the company said in a blog post. Since its introduction, ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used learning tools for students worldwide, used for tackling challenging homework, preparing for exams, and exploring new concepts and ideas, according to OpenAI. 'But its use in education has also raised an important question: how do we ensure it is used to support real learning, and doesn't just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them,' the company said. In 'study mode', ChatGPT will prompt students to interact with questions tailored to their objective and skill level, helping them build a deeper understanding of the subject. The new mode has been built on system instructions developed by OpenAI in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts. The key features of the new mode include prompting students, providing responses in easy-to-follow sections, personalised learning support, quizzes, and open-ended questions to check learning on a continuous basis, as OpenAI stated in the post. 'As we run longer-term studies on how students learn best with AI, we intend to publish a deeper analysis of what we have learned about the links between model design and cognition, shape future product experiences based on these insights, and work side by side with the broader education ecosystem to ensure AI benefits learners worldwide,' OpenAI said. The leading global company in AI has introduced a range of new features in its products over the past few years. Earlier this year, in April, OpenAI introduced updates that allowed users to search, compare, and buy products in ChatGPT by providing personalised recommendations for products, visual details of the product they are looking for, the price, as well as a direct link to purchase it. In February 2024, OpenAI said it was 'testing the ability for ChatGPT to remember things you discuss to make future chats more helpful'. The idea, OpenAI had then said, was to save users from 'having to repeat information' so that future conversations with the chatbot became more useful. The memory feature was rolled out to all users in September that year. In an update on April 10 this year, OpenAI said that the memory in ChatGPT was now comprehensive as the LLM could, in addition to memories saved by users, also reference past conversations between the chatbot and the user to deliver more personalised responses. In December 2024, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT's integration with WhatsApp, where users could send a message to ChatGPT to get up-to-date answers.

AI puts 600,000 jobs at risk but opens new roles, says Malaysia's HR minister
Malaysia's job landscape is undergoing a major transformation as artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates across industries, according to Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Speaking at the 52nd ARTDO International Conference , Sim said AI could unlock thousands of new employment opportunities, with over 60 emerging job roles already identified, 70% of them in the AI and tech sector. A recent ministry-commissioned study revealed that 600,000 existing jobs are "at risk" due to AI, though not necessarily lost. 'Some may become obsolete, but most will be reshaped, demanding urgent reskilling and upskilling,' Sim said. He urged a shift from 'worry to strategy,' stressing that Malaysia must equip its workforce with AI-ready skills. New job roles such as prompt engineers are emerging, requiring not just technical expertise but also oversight of AI-generated outputs. Sim emphasised two key skill pillars: high-level AI proficiency for managing or developing AI systems, and broad AI literacy for everyday users. To support this, the MyMahir portal is helping Malaysians align their training with future-ready skills. Sim also highlighted the need for clear ethical and legal frameworks to guide AI's development responsibly. 'This is not just about technology, it's about values, regulation, and inclusive growth,' he concluded, reinforcing the ministry's commitment to balancing innovation with workforce readiness.
