What We Are Reading Today: ‘Plastics'

Arab News4 days ago
Edited by Caroline Fowler and Ittai Weinryb
Modern and contemporary art wouldn't exist without the invention of plastics. From sculpture to paint, and photography to film, plastics have shaped every major medium of art. In turn, plastics have revolutionized art conservation, transforming the possibilities of preservation but also producing new challenges for conservators struggling to preserve toxic and degrading material. Hailed as utopian in the 20th century, plastics today are often understood as pollution and waste—a central cause of ecological crisis.

Tour de france finale brings excitement to montmartre with a climb to sacré-coeur

Hours before the Tour de France peloton was due to pass through Montmartre on Sunday, thousands of fans packed the streets, eager to claim a prime spot to watch riders climb the iconic hill during the final stage of the race. The Tour is breaking with tradition this year as organizers look to build on the popular success of the Paris Olympic road race. During last years Olympics, massive crowds lined the streets of Montmartre – a neighborhood in northern Paris famous for its artistic heritage and sweeping city views – to cheer on riders. Inspired by the frenetic atmosphere, Tour organizers decided to include the Montmartre climb in this summer's route. Riders will ascend the hill and pass beneath the Sacré-Coeur basilica before heading to the finish on the Champs-Élysées. Spectators began arriving early Sunday on the cobbled Rue Lepic, well before race leader Tadej Pogačar and his rivals were expected to tackle the steep ascent. Fans also filled the stairs beneath the Sacré-Coeur to ensure they didn't miss a moment of the action. Riders will also pass the Moulin Rouge before climbing to the Butte Montmartre. To mark the occasion, dancers in tricolor costumes will perform a French Cancan outside the cabaret. Traditionally, the final stage is largely processional until a sprint decides the day's winner on the Champs-Elysées. On Sunday, the final climb comes less than 7km from the finish, making it unlikely that many sprinters will contend for the stage win. During the Olympics, the road races drew more than 500,000 spectators in Paris. Last year's Tour concluded outside Paris for the first time since 1905 because of a scheduling conflict with the Olympics, with the final stage held in Nice. The Champs-Élysées returned this year for the conclusion of the 3320-kilometer (2060-mile) race.

'Lilo & Stitch' stars reflect on film's success and are eager for a sequel

A few things have changed for the stars of Lilo & Stitch since the movie became the breakout hit of 2025. For 8-year-old star Maia Kealoha it's meant no more Doritos – she's learned she has to keep her teeth clean especially when doing interviews. Kealoha, Sydney Agudong, and Tia Carrere have been doing lots of those, taking a victory lap with Lilo & Stitch at Comic-Con 2025 and promoting the film's release for digital purchase. Another change? Kealoha says with a big grin that she's been recognized at stores like five thousand times. Agudong says the movie, an ode to Hawaii, and it's been really cool to see how much the world has taken to it and how much impact Lilo & Stitch really has had as just this lifelong and timeless story. She says she's been fortunate to celebrate the film's success with family and friends and despite premieres and whirlwind interviews she still gets to go to the beach and have fun all over again and I'm just the same. Kealoha and Agudong are the breakout stars of the film which is the biggest blockbuster of 2025 earning more than 1 billion. 'Our little blue friend Stitch is now a billionaire and we couldn't be more excited about it,' Carrere says excitedly. As for a sequel, Agudong says the trio are feeling hanna hou, a Hawaiian term for repeating or doing something again. 'Though of course we cannot confirm or deny the existence of any such project in this universe or the next. Sorry!' Carrere cheerfully noted.

Cc sabathia and his family have a bumpy ride to cooperstown

For CC Sabathia, getting elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame was much easier than actually getting to the Hall of Fame. Sabathia, whose career spanned 19 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Yankees, was voted in on his first year of eligibility. Getting to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame weekend activities, to be capped by his induction Sunday, proved a tad more difficult. It was an adventure, Sabathia said Saturday. Sabathia, wife Amber, and their four children left their Alpine, New Jersey, home at about 4 p.m. Thursday. They traveled in two vehicles, as is their family custom, and were about 75 miles (120 kilometers) into their 177-mile trip when things got interesting. 'We stopped to get food. Everything's going great,' Sabathia said. 'We tried to get on the on-ramp on (Route) 17, and the car just stopped. I was behind her (Amber). Most of the time when we're driving, I'm gone. I'm never driving behind her, but for some reason I was taking my time riding behind her.' Sabathia had a clear view of what was happening. They called for assistance. The family piled into Sabathia's car and returned home to grab another vehicle as a tow truck towed their broken-down Escalade back to Alpine. The Sabathias arrived in Cooperstown at about midnight. What should have been a drive of about three hours became an eight-hour journey. 'It was pretty funny. I was taking pictures. My kids were doing TikToks, and Amber was in the back like the super serious person she is, getting everything done,' Sabathia said. 'People were honking at us and recognizing us on the side of the road. It was fun for us. For her, it was a nightmare.' The Sabathias, including Amber, will certainly be all smiles Sunday.
