Insider: Lakers have checked in on All-Star wing

USA Today3 days ago

While the Los Angeles Lakers badly need a starting-level center, they're also cognizant that they have other roster needs that need to be addressed if they are to become legitimate championship contenders.
One of those other needs is another two-way wing. Dorian Finney-Smith made a significant impact on the team upon arriving in a late December trade, but at this point in his career, he's primarily a power forward. The Lakers could use an athletic wing who can play the 2 or 3 positions (or both), hit 3-pointers and defend at a high level.
Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat does all that and more. He has been mentioned as someone L.A. should perhaps go after and could perhaps land. Indeed, insider Anthony Irwin said on his "Lakers Lounge" podcast that the team has talked to Miami about Wiggins (h/t Athlon Sports).
"Wiggins… have I heard of any interest in him? I think right now the Lakers are interested in any athlete," Irwin began on the Lakers Lounge. "Now Wiggins does make a little too much money for my liking. $28 million is a lot for Andrew Wiggins. I would imagine they are very well in tune with what Pat [Riley] thinks of Andrew Wiggins, but the Lakers have checked in on him and asked about what the price would be."
Wiggins averaged 18.0 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range this season. After he was traded to the Golden State Warriors five years ago, he reinvented himself into a two-way player after he had been regarded as a low-efficiency, no-defense-playing chucker during his initial years with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Warriors sent him to Miami in February as part of the deal that brought them six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler.
Wiggins could potentially start at the 3 for the Lakers and guard multiple positions on the perimeter, and his experience winning the 2022 NBA championship in Golden State wouldn't exactly hurt either.

Wisconsin's Greg Gard, John Blackwell react to Utah Jazz selecting John Tonje in NBA Draft

Wisconsin basketball head coach Greg Gard and starting shooting guard John Blackwell shared their reactions to John Tonje being selected with the No. 53 overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft on Thursday. After selecting Rutgers' standout Ace Bailey at No. 5 overall and 2025 NCAA champion Walter Clayton Jr. at No. 18, the Utah Jazz snagged the former Badger late in the second round on Thursday. Shortly afterwards, his former running mate John Blackwell took to social media to share a quick congratulatory tweet: "So proud of you man!" Blackwell wrote. "God is so good! You deserve it [for real]!" Tonje's head coach, who witnessed him seamlessly transition into UW's program as the go-to offensive option during the 2024-25 campaign, also chimed in: "We are so happy for John," Gard told "He's worked for a long time for this moment and has scratched and clawed his way to being an elite player. Utah is going to love what he brings to the organization. He's humble, mature and selfless, along with having a relentless drive to get better every day. He was an absolute joy to coach at Wisconsin and I'm ecstatic to watch his career unfold in the NBA." Throughout Wisconsin's 27-10 campaign, Blackwell and Tonje captained the Badgers to signature wins and a trip to the Big Ten Tournament's title game. In doing so, UW secured a No. 3 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament before falling to BYU in a 91-89 thriller. In that contest, Tonje and Blackwell combined for 58 of Wisconsin's 89 points off 16-of-32 shooting from the field, 6-of-16 from 3 and 20-of-23 from the charity stripe. The two were the unquestionable engine of UW's offensive attack. Blackwell would go on to test the NBA waters before withdrawing and returning to college, enabling him to focus on his mission in Madison while uplifting his former teammate and friend to achieve his dreams. While in Madison, Tonje averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting a terrific 46.5% from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line. That output was enough to net him second-team All-America honors, a first-team All-Big Ten nod and a Naismith Memorial Semifinalist finish. Tonje will now look to make a professional statement when the Utah Jazz begin summer league action from July 5-7 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The three-day circuit will also feature the Memphis Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Philadelphia 76ers. Adou Thiero on two NBA players he's trying to learn from

As the Los Angeles Lakers look to restock their roster with more complementary talent nearly five months after the Luka Doncic trade, they're hoping that incoming rookie Adou Thiero will be part of their core for years to come. They acquired his rights on Thursday after he was the No. 36 pick in the draft, and he seems to have the natural tools to become a legitimate rotation player, if not a starter, someday. While he cannot shoot straight from the perimeter, he's very athletic and attacks the basket relentlessly, and he has the ability to disrupt things on the defensive end. If he pans out, the 6-foot-8 forward could be the type of two-way wing the Lakers need more of. He joined Los Angeles-based Spectrum SportsNet for an interview and said he's studying two of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA to model his game after them. 'I watch a lot of defenders, trying to pick up on what they do in the league, that's a different level. It's a lot of different stuff offensive players do in the league, so just trying to pick up off of OG Anunoby, Jrue Holiday, he's a great defender. Just picking up on what they do, watching how they play defense.' Anunoby, who plays for the New York Knicks and helped transform them into contenders when they traded for him midway through last season, is an excellent perimeter defender who also averaged 18.0 points a game this season and is a dependable 3-point shooter. Holiday is one of the best defenders at the point guard position, and he absolutely covers opponents like a straitjacket. He helped the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics win the NBA championship in 2021 and 2024, respectively. The Lakers are hoping for similar results as Thiero gets acclimated to his new surroundings.

Former Tennessee running back's son commits to Vols

Tennessee baseball received a transfer commitment on Thursday. Rice freshman two-way player Blaine Brown announced his commitment to the Vols. He is the son of former Colorado and NFL running back Chris Brown. Chris Brown played for the Buffaloes and head coach Gary Barnett from 2001-02, and was inducted into the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. In 2001, he was part of a Colorado team that upset Texas, 39-37, in the Big 12 championship game. Chris Brown totaled 182 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 33 attempts. Chris Brown returned for his junior season in 2002 and achieved All-America status. He was a runner-up for the Doak Walker Award, which is awarded to the nation's best running back. Following his junior season, Chris Brown entered the 2002 NFL draft and was selected in the third round (No. 93 overall) by Tennessee. He played five seasons with the Titans before concluding his professional career with Houston. Follow Vols Wire on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
